12/3/25, 11:12 AM
Guitarist and composer Billy Monama will stage the Mayibuye iAfrika Concert: The Rebirth of Ubuntu on Saturday at Pretoria’s State Theatre. The event honours South African music legends Miriam Makeba, Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse, Sibongile Khumalo, Lucky Dube, and Johnny Clegg.
Monama said the concert aims to reconnect South Africans with their identity, pride, and shared humanity. The event features reimagined performances of iconic works by Simphiwe Dana, Judith Sephuma, Langa Mavuso, Maleh, and Elvis Blue.
“The audience can expect a four-hour musical journey with a 20-piece orchestra, world-class arrangements, and carefully researched storytelling,” Monama said. “We want people to leave with pride, reflection, and renewed appreciation for the power of culture to unite.”
The concert aligns with Reconciliation Month, providing an opportunity to revive the spirit of ubuntu. Monama emphasised the role of musicians in reflecting society and preserving South Africa’s musical heritage.
“SA jazz is experiencing a resurgence,” he added. “Young musicians are interpreting tradition while honouring the foundations laid by the greats. This concert is a reminder of our cultural roots and collective identity.”
Monama hopes the event inspires artists and audiences alike to embrace their heritage, fostering unity and a sense of pride in South Africa’s rich musical history.
