A suspected ADF attack in Makumo, in Mambasa territory, killed at least nine civilians on Sunday evening, according to local reporting cited by 7sur7.

The assault also left several people injured and caused house fires, forcing residents to flee toward areas considered safer. The attack reportedly occurred near Cepac central after assailants came from the Makele area.

Provincial deputy Gilbert Sivamwenda said the attackers operated without being stopped, while residents reported spending the night outside or around fires because of fears of another incursion.

The incident is likely to increase pressure for stronger security monitoring along the Makumo axis, especially after earlier alerts about suspicious ADF movements between Mantumbi and Makumo. Local sources also reported another attack in Makele earlier Sunday that left one person dead and another injured.

The wider Mambasa area has faced repeated violence linked to the ADF. It was reported this week that ADF-linked attacks in eastern Congo killed dozens of civilians and involved looting and burned homes, while UN OCHA said security conditions in Mambasa deteriorated sharply in March 2026.
