Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has disclosed that her uterine fibroid condition, first diagnosed in 2014, has returned and is now more severe.

According to the report , Nyong’o said doctors recently informed her that she now has more than 50 fibroids, with the largest measuring the size of an orange.

Speaking on the ‘Today’ show, the actress said she was initially treated in 2014, when surgeons removed 23 fibroids. She described the new diagnosis as shocking and said it has reignited concerns about her reproductive health.

Nyong’o explained that her current options are either undergoing another invasive myomectomy or managing ongoing pain. She noted that she is not yet ready to have another surgery due to its invasive nature and associated risks.

Beyond sharing her personal experience, Nyong’o is advocating for greater awareness and improved treatment options. She is raising funds for research focused on less invasive and non-invasive approaches to fibroid care and is collaborating with organisations dedicated to uterine health.

Medical experts say uterine fibroids are common and may cause heavy bleeding, prolonged periods and pelvic pain. Treatment decisions typically depend on the size and location of the fibroids, severity of symptoms and a patient’s fertility goals.

Nyong’o has called for increased research and clearer medical guidance so that patients can access effective treatments without stigma or unnecessary risk.
