American actress Jada Pinkett has explained the reasons behind her public admission of a past relationship with singer August Alsina during her marriage to actor Will Smith.
Speaking while promoting her memoir I Am, You Are, We Are, Worthy!, Pinkett said the decision to go public was influenced by a desire to protect her husband and reduce emotional strain on their family.
According to her, although she could have kept the relationship private, she believed addressing it openly would help Smith process the situation and allow the family to move forward.
Pinkett stated that she was willing to accept public criticism if it meant safeguarding her husband’s emotional well-being. She acknowledged that she deliberately took responsibility in the public eye to prevent further tension.
She added that embracing the narrative—even being perceived negatively—was part of her effort to bring closure to the situation and shift focus toward healing.
The actress first publicly addressed the relationship, which she previously described as an “entanglement,” during a 2020 episode of Red Table Talk, at a time when she and Smith were separated.
Pinkett maintained that the disclosure was part of her personal growth and her attempt to navigate the complexities of her marriage.
