Ireland is facing growing calls for accountability and security reform after Yves Sakila, a 35-year-old Congolese man, died after being restrained outside Arnotts department store in Dublin on May 15.
Sakila had reportedly been suspected of shoplifting before being chased and detained by private security guards on Henry Street. Video of the incident showed him pinned to the ground for several minutes before becoming motionless, according to AP.
Irish police are investigating the death, while the police ombudsman is also examining the Garda response. RTÉ reported that Ireland’s Special Rapporteur on Racism and Racial Equality has called for an independent investigation.
Prime Minister Micheál Martin has urged a thorough inquiry, saying many people are concerned about what happened. The Irish Times reported that Sakila’s family had still not been told the cause of death days after the incident.
The case has sparked vigils and protests in Dublin, with campaigners demanding transparency, anti-racism training and stronger rules on the use of force by civilian security personnel.
Arnotts said it was deeply saddened by Sakila’s death and is reviewing its contracted security services.
