How to check your loan status

HEF says you can check application, allocation, and disbursement status on the student portal. See the HEF FAQs.

  1. Visit portal.hef.co.ke and log in with the details you used to apply.

  2. Check application status, including whether funding has been allocated.

  3. Review allocation details for any scholarship or loan amount shown on your account.

  4. Check disbursement to see whether funds have been released.

Tuition is disbursed to your university or TVET institution. Upkeep is paid to your personal account. Disbursements are processed at the beginning of the semester, subject to confirmation by your institution.

If you were allocated funding but have not received upkeep, first check the portal. Then confirm your institution has completed its confirmation, and that the bank or M-Pesa number on your account is registered in your name.

Forgot your password?

Use the official password reset page. Enter your email, choose reset by email or by phone, then enter the OTP.

The portal requires a new password with at least 6 characters, one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter, one digit, and one special character.

New users: register first

HELB student FAQs say:

  1. Open the Student Portal and click Register.

  2. Enter your National ID number, or KCSE index number if you are a minor.

  3. Enter a valid email and password, then register.

  4. Check your inbox or spam to activate the account, then log in.

  5. Verify your telephone number with the code sent to you.

HEF currently says the 2026/2027 portal is open for first-time undergraduate and TVET loan, bursary, and scholarship applications, and that an official admission letter is required before you apply for funding. For the full application, see HELB Loan Application 2026: Requirements and How to Apply.

HELB app, USSD *642# and M-Pesa

Download the official HELB app on Google Play from Higher Education Loans Board. The listing says you can create an account, get mini-statements, check loan repayment and disbursement status, see balances, apply, and repay.

Use a mobile number registered in your name. HELB says numbers not registered in the student’s name cannot complete app applications.

USSD: Dial *642#. Register and choose a PIN you will remember. HELB’s USSD page covers withdrawing upkeep (Ksh.15 per transaction) and subsequent loan applications. HELB’s mobile wallet notice also says *642# and the M-Pesa Mini App can be used to view loan status and statements.

To withdraw upkeep in the M-Pesa app, HELB says: open M-Pesa, go to Categories, then Education, then the HELB Mini App, and sign in with your M-Pesa number.

HELB also lists Apple App Store on its self-serve page. Use the official Google Play listing above, or search HELB from Higher Education Loans Board, rather than a random third-party app.

Student portal vs loanees portal

The student portal is for current students. HELB says once you register and log in you can handle loan application, allocation, and disbursement status.

The loanees portal is for after studies: balance statements, compliance, and clearance. HELB points loanees login and sign-up to the same HEF sign-in page.

Appeals

The HEF portal has an online scholarship and loan review. If your situation changes, HEF says you can fill an online Funds Appeal form. Review is subject to availability of funds.

Scams and contacts

HELB applications are paperless. You are not required to print a form. HELB does not charge any fee to apply. Report extortion. Only use helb.co.ke and hef.co.ke.

Email ContactCentre@helb.co.ke or call 0711 052 000.
