Nigerian singer and songwriter Harrison Tare Okiri, known professionally as Harrysong, has said his tribute song dedicated to late South African leader Nelson Mandela played a defining role in his rise within the music industry, according to a source article.
The artist shared the reflection during an appearance on Celebrity Chit-Chat, a programme aired on Nigerian Tribune TV, where he discussed the inspiration behind the song “Mandela” and how it influenced his career trajectory.
Harrysong explained that the song was written during the period following Mandela’s death, when global attention was focused on the former president’s legacy and contribution to freedom and justice.
He said Mandela’s life story and global impact motivated him to create the tribute at a time when he was also serving as an ambassador for a major telecommunications company in Nigeria.
According to the singer, the release of the song marked a breakthrough moment, earning him the Headies Award for Most Downloaded Callertune in 2013. He said the recognition significantly expanded his visibility and opened doors beyond Nigeria’s music scene.
Harrysong added that the song led to his first international travel and later contributed to his first experience attending the Grammy Awards. He said the project helped position him globally, not only as a performer but also as a songwriter and music director.
The musician noted that the success of the Mandela tribute created lasting opportunities within the entertainment industry and affirmed his creative direction. He has since remained active in music while also holding a public service role as Executive Assistant on Entertainment to the Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori.
