The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), backed by Wazalendo militias, have regained control of the strategic locality of Kazinga in Masisi territory, North Kivu, after about two weeks of occupation by AFC/M23 rebels.
According to local reporting, the operation culminated on Monday, March 9, following an offensive launched by government-aligned forces to retake the area. The fighting reportedly involved both heavy and light weapons and lasted throughout the day before the situation gradually calmed toward evening.
Kazinga lies in the Osso Banyungu sector of Masisi territory, an area that has repeatedly changed hands during recent fighting in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The locality is considered a key position for controlling movements and supply routes within parts of North Kivu.
During the period of rebel control, many residents fled their homes and sought refuge in nearby bush areas, where humanitarian conditions remain difficult. Local sources say displacement increased as clashes intensified around the locality.
The recapture of Kazinga follows reports that AFC/M23 rebels had withdrawn from nearby localities including Buabo and Ndete in the days leading up to the offensive. The latest development is expected to allow the FARDC and allied forces to reinforce their presence in the Osso Banyungu sector and consolidate their positions in Masisi territory.
Security dynamics in Masisi remain fluid, with front lines shifting frequently between government forces, allied local militias, and rebel groups operating in North Kivu.
