Ethiopia Pioneers Digital ID Initiative for Refugees

Ethiopia's Refugees and Returnees Service, in partnership with the National ID Project and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), has commenced the issuance of digital IDs to refugees, marking a significant leap in humanitarian assistance and digital inclusion.
During the launch event, Teyiba Hassan, Director-General of the Refugees and Returnees Service, emphasized Ethiopia's commitment to upholding refugee rights. She noted that the digital IDs represent a critical step toward integrating refugees into the national framework, ensuring they receive the necessary services and support.
Yodahe Zemikael, General Manager of the National ID Project, highlighted the benefits of the digital IDs, pointing out their role in streamlining access to services for refugees and enhancing the efficiency of information management systems.
Andrew Mbogori, UNHCR Country Representative, lauded Ethiopia's leadership in East Africa with the introduction of the digital ID platform, 'Fayda'. This initiative not only facilitates access to essential services and employment opportunities for refugees and asylum seekers but also underscores Ethiopia's commitment to international refugee rights.
This pioneering digital ID initiative reinforces Ethiopia's position as a leader in inclusive policies and practices, setting a commendable example for respecting and integrating refugees into national systems.
