Eddy Kenzo a Ugandan Afropop star

Eddy Kenzo is a Ugandan singer, songwriter and music executive whose joyful Afropop carried a story of survival from the streets of Masaka to the Grammy Awards. Born Edrisah Kenzo Musuuza, he broke through nationally with “Stamina” before the Ghetto Kids’ exuberant dance video turned “Sitya Loss” into an international phenomenon.

He later became the first Ugandan-based musician nominated for a Grammy and returned as a nominee in 2026. Kenzo also uses his official X account to share his music and public work. Beyond his BET Award and six studio albums, he leads the Uganda National Musicians Federation and has become an influential advocate for the country’s creative industry.

Who is Eddy Kenzo? Eddy Kenzo is a Ugandan Afropop star best known for “Sitya Loss,” the 2015 BET Viewers’ Choice Award and two Grammy nominations. His rise from childhood homelessness to international recognition has made him one of Uganda’s most visible musical ambassadors.

Early Life and Creative Roots

Eddy Kenzo was born Edrisah Kenzo Musuuza in Masaka, Uganda. The most consistently reported birth date is December 25, 1989, making him 36 years old as of July 23, 2026. His childhood, however, was shaped less by celebration than by instability. He lost his mother when he was about four or five and spent years surviving on the streets of Masaka and Kampala.

Football offered an early route out. Kenzo played seriously as a boy, and the sport helped him return to school, but music remained the talent he believed could change his life. In a detailed CNN interview about his childhood and career, he said he composed over other artists’ beats before he could afford studio access. He began recording professionally around 2008, working with Mikie Wine on “Yannimba.”

Breakthrough and Rise to Fame

Kenzo’s first major Ugandan breakthrough came with “Stamina” in 2010. The upbeat song became so popular that it entered the atmosphere of Uganda’s 2011 election campaigns. Kenzo later described it as the record that brought his first meaningful income, better housing and opportunities to travel.

The larger transformation came in 2014. “Sitya Loss,” a Luganda title meaning “I am not afraid of losing,” was already gathering attention when a simple dance video featuring the Ghetto Kids appeared online. Daily Monitor’s reconstruction of the song’s rise explains that the phone-shot, single-take clip spread rapidly and had reached about three million views by June 2014. The children’s energy gave the song a visual identity that crossed language and national borders.

That visibility carried Kenzo into Francophone Africa, major African music television channels and international bookings. In 2015, he won BET’s Viewers’ Choice Best New International Artist award, a victory reported at the time by Monitor. “Sitya Loss” did more than produce a hit: it expanded expectations for how far a Ugandan pop record could travel.
