Congolese authorities are expected to reinforce security around Bangoka International Airport after Mediacongo reported that AFC/M23 claimed responsibility for a drone operation targeting the Kisangani facility. The rebel coalition said it aimed at a FARDC drone command center based at the airport.

The latest claim renews concern over Bangoka’s strategic role. Located near Kisangani in Tshopo province, the airport supports civilian flights as well as military and logistical operations, making it a sensitive site as the eastern DRC conflict widens beyond traditional front lines.

Earlier incidents had already raised alarms. Provincial authorities previously said drones targeting Bangoka were intercepted before causing major damage, while reports in February linked similar attacks to AFC/M23 activity.

The security focus now turns to how Kinshasa and local authorities protect air traffic, civilian infrastructure and military logistics around Kisangani. The renewed attack claim comes as the UN has warned that fighting in eastern Congo is increasingly involving drones and heavy weapons, adding risks for civilians and regional stability, according to AP reporting.

For the DRC, Bangoka is no longer only a transport hub. It has become part of a broader security test as military pressure, rebel claims and diplomatic efforts continue to shape the conflict.
