DR Congo president sworn in for new term before huge crowd

On June 30, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) celebrated its 64th Independence Day with a speech from President Félix Tshisekedi, who addressed the nation's pressing security and economic challenges. This year's celebration was overshadowed by escalating conflict in the east, where the Congolese army faces significant difficulties.

Security Crisis in the East

The president's speech came on the heels of the M23 rebels, supported by Rwanda, seizing the strategic town of Kanyabayonga in North Kivu on June 28. Addressing this crisis, Tshisekedi emphasized the importance of safeguarding national sovereignty.

“What is happening in Kanyabayonga, Kayini, the villages of southern Lubero, and the territories of Rutshuru, Nyiragongo, and Masisi is a flagrant aggression against our national sovereignty and the peace of our people. Our valiant soldiers are on the front line, and together we will triumph over this unjustified aggression. Clear and firm instructions have been given for the safeguarding of the territorial integrity of our country,” stated President Tshisekedi.

He highlighted the steps taken by the Higher Defence Council, convened immediately after the capture of Kanyabayonga, and announced that the new government would prioritize strengthening the state's capacity to secure the territory and its population, allocating 20% of the annual budget over the next five years to this effort.

Economic Outlook and Social Commitment

Turning to the economic front, Tshisekedi acknowledged the country's socio-economic difficulties but remained optimistic about the future. Despite facing inflation and a declining national currency, he assured that the economic outlook remains favorable.

"Nothing will stop my determination to provide appropriate and urgent solutions. I instruct the government to take the necessary measures to reduce the cost of the household basket and improve the purchasing power of the population," he affirmed.

President Tshisekedi's speech underscored his commitment to addressing both the immediate security threats and the long-term economic needs of the Congolese people. As the nation moves forward, the president's directives aim to foster stability and prosperity across the DRC.
