The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and China have taken a major step in deepening their strategic partnership, following high-level meetings held this week in Kinshasa. Both sides pledged to expand cooperation in trade, infrastructure, agriculture, and mining, signaling a new phase in their bilateral relationship.
During the visit, Qin Boyong, Vice Chairperson of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), met separately with President Félix Tshisekedi and Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka. Qin delivered warm greetings from Chinese President Xi Jinping and other senior Chinese leaders, reaffirming China’s long-term commitment to its partnership with the DRC.
China is ready to deepen cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative and push the China-DRC partnership to new heights,” Qin said during the meetings.
President Tshisekedi and Prime Minister Tuluka welcomed China’s continued support and praised its contribution to the DRC’s development. They emphasized the importance of strengthening collaboration in sectors like trade, mining, and agriculture, areas where China already plays a major role in the Congolese economy.
The DRC leadership also restated their commitment to the One-China Policy, expressing hope for China’s peaceful reunification. In return, the Chinese delegation praised the DRC’s continued political support and its role in regional stability.
In addition to meetings with the executive branch, Qin Boyong also held talks with Modeste Bahati Lukwebo, Second Vice President of the Congolese Senate. The CPPCC delegation’s two-day visit to Kinshasa reflects China’s increasing engagement across Africa and the importance it places on its strategic ties with the DRC.
This development comes as part of a broader push to implement outcomes from the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and increase practical cooperation between African nations and China.
As the DRC continues to navigate its post-conflict recovery and development, partnerships like these may play a defining role in the country’s long-term growth.
