Afrobeats star Davido has distanced himself from claims that he is affiliated with the “City Boys” movement, clarifying that his relationship with Seyi Tinubu is personal and does not influence his views on national issues.
The singer, whose real name is David Adeleke, made the clarification following criticism that emerged after he spoke about insecurity, hardship, and governance challenges in Nigeria.
Earlier, Davido had taken to social media platform X to express concern over the state of the nation, saying entertainers, including himself, needed to speak more openly about injustice and the difficulties faced by citizens.
His comments generated mixed reactions online, with some users questioning his position and suggesting that his association with political figures limited his willingness to criticize government policies.
Responding to the allegations, Davido stated that he is not a member of any group known as “City Boys” and rejected suggestions that he was politically aligned through such a movement.
The award-winning artist also explained that he has maintained a longstanding friendship with Seyi Tinubu but stressed that the relationship remains personal.
According to Davido, his friendship has never prevented him from voicing concerns directly when necessary, noting that he frequently communicates his opinions and complaints privately.
He further recalled previous criticism he faced after discussing Nigeria’s challenges on international platforms, arguing that public reactions often change regardless of an individual’s intentions.
Davido maintained that his recent comments were motivated by concern for the country's future and renewed his call for entertainers and public figures to engage more actively in conversations about national development and social issues.
