BNXN a Nigerian Afro-fusion singer
BNXN is a Nigerian singer and songwriter whose soft-grained voice and emotionally precise hooks have made him one of Afrobeats’ most recognisable collaborators. Born Daniel Etiese Benson, the former Buju moved from viral freestyles and “Spiritual” into a defining 2021 run that included “Outside,” LADIPOE’s “Feeling” and Wizkid’s “Mood.”
He later won the Headies Next Rated award and developed a catalogue led by Sincerely, Benson and CAPTAIN. On X, he continues to use the name pronounced “Benson,” a rebrand that separated his identity from Jamaican reggae artist Buju Banton. His 2026 releases with Sarz and Asake show that the melodic instinct behind his breakthrough is still expanding.
Who is BNXN? BNXN, formerly known as Buju, is a Nigerian Afro-fusion singer and songwriter born Daniel Etiese Benson. He became widely known through “L’enu,” “Feeling,” “Outside,” “Mood” and “Finesse,” won the 2022 Headies Next Rated award, and has since released the albums Sincerely, Benson and CAPTAIN.
“Feeling,” “Outside” and the Defining Breakthrough
BNXN’s rise was not built around a single record. “Spiritual,” featuring Zlatan, gave his early momentum a national shape in 2019. The Burna Boy-assisted remix of “L’enu” followed in 2020 and led to a period with Spaceship Records. The decisive scale change came after he returned to independence under To Your Ears Entertainment.
In 2021, “Outside” arrived alongside guest appearances that made his voice difficult to miss. LADIPOE’s “Feeling,” Blaqbonez’s “Bling,” Savage’s “Confident” and Wizkid’s “Mood” carried his mellow phrasing across rap, pop and club records. OkayAfrica’s account of that breakthrough year records performances during Wizkid’s O2 run, headline shows in London and Lagos, and the release of Sorry I’m Late.
Those collaborations became an entry point, not a permanent supporting role. The BNXN songs collected by XTRAfrica place “Outside,” “Very Soon,” “Oshimiri” and his Sarz records across the same catalogue. XTRAfrica’s Wizkid music page also places “Mood” within the work of the star whose audience helped carry BNXN beyond Nigeria.
The sequence continued in 2022 with Pheelz’s “Finesse,” a record that travelled far beyond its TikTok preview. That year also brought Bad Since ’97, collaborations with Dave and JAE5, and the Headies Next Rated prize. By then, BNXN had proved that the distinctive hook-maker could also sustain his own projects.
Gbagada Beginnings and BNXN’s Formative Creative Roots
Daniel Etiese Benson was born on 14 May 1997 and is 29 as of 11 August 2026. He spent much of his childhood in Gbagada, Lagos, before his family moved to Ogun State; his family roots are in Akwa Ibom. Sources conflict over whether his exact birthplace was Lagos or Akwa Ibom State, so the article does not force a conclusion.
