Kinshasa/Goma, DRC – May 23, 2026 — Bernard Maheshe Byamungu, widely known as “Tiger One” and a senior military figure in the AFC/M23 coalition, has reportedly died from injuries sustained in a drone strike, according to multiple sources close to the rebellion.
An M23 officer publicly stated that Byamungu was fatally wounded by drone shrapnel to the neck during operations in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. He reportedly succumbed to his injuries after a period of suffering. This development follows the earlier killing of M23 military spokesperson Lt. Col. Willy Ngoma in a similar FARDC drone strike in the Rubaya area of North Kivu in February 2026.
Background on Byamungu
Byamungu, a former colonel in the Congolese armed forces (FARDC), defected to the M23 in 2012. He had commanded the 9th Sector in Uvira, South Kivu, before joining the rebellion. Captured after the first M23 offensive, he was imprisoned for several years and released around 2019 amid political measures under President Félix Tshisekedi. He re-emerged with the rebels in 2022 and rose quickly as Deputy Commander for Operations and Intelligence.
He played a key role in M23’s military strategy during advances in North Kivu territories, including Rutshuru, Masisi, and areas around Rubaya. Byamungu was also present during high-profile moments, such as the group’s capture of Bukavu in early 2025, where he addressed residents.
Sanctions and Accusations
Byamungu has long been a controversial figure. The United Nations, European Union, and United States have sanctioned him for his alleged involvement in serious human rights abuses, including planning atrocities and links to massacres such as those in Kishishe. He was described as one of the most influential and feared operational commanders in the M23-RDF (Rwanda Defence Force) aligned coalition.
Context in the Ongoing Conflict
This reported loss comes amid continued intense fighting in eastern DRC. The AFC/M23 coalition, which has seized significant territory since 2022, including Goma and parts of Bukavu, faces persistent Congolese army (FARDC) counter-efforts, including increased use of drones.
Analysts view Byamungu’s reported death as a potential symbolic and operational setback for the rebels, possibly triggering shifts in their command structure at a critical time. However, as of now, there has been no official confirmation from M23 leadership or independent verification from major international outlets. The conflict continues to cause massive displacement and a severe humanitarian crisis in the region.
