Nigerian singer Bella Shmurda has revealed that his 2020 hit single Cash App was created with young internet fraudsters, popularly known as Yahoo boys, in mind.
Speaking in an interview with Clout Africa, the artist said the pressures and difficulties associated with internet fraud influenced the song’s direction, even though he was not involved in the activity.
When asked whether he was participating in internet fraud at the time, he clarified that the inspiration was observational.“It is Yahoo in the sense that they have to dance. These people that are hustling, you have to make them happy. Because internet fraud is stressful. It has a lot of challenges,” he said.
Shmurda added that the song came to him naturally.“The truth is, when it comes to inspiration, you don’t have any story behind it. It is natural, it just comes. It is God-given. So, Cash App is divine,” he noted.
Released in 2020 and featuring Zlatan and Lincoln, Cash App became a nationwide hit and gained traction across Africa, despite public criticism over its perceived link to cybercrime.
