Former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on President Bola Tinubu and the country’s security leadership to take action following reports of an attack on Peter Obi and other leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benin City, Edo State.

In a statement reported on Tuesday, Atiku described the incident as unacceptable in a democracy and said the government has a constitutional responsibility to protect lives and property “without discrimination or partisanship,” according to Daily Post.

.

The reported attack occurred during activities around the formal declaration of Olumide Akpata into the ADC, with Yunusa Tanko, an Obidient movement coordinator, also saying Obi and ADC chieftains came under attack in Benin City .

Atiku argued that Nigeria is entering a dangerous phase where opposition figures are not only pressured through institutions but may now be physically targeted, urging security agencies to ensure the safety of opposition leaders and supporters.

His remarks come amid heightened political tension in Edo State, after earlier warnings and public exchanges involving Obi’s visits to the state were reported.
