The Bola Tinubu-led government has advised northern politicians, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, to delay their presidential ambitions until 2031. This was stated by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, during an interview on TVC’s Politics on Sunday.
Akume emphasized that President Tinubu should complete a second term before any northern candidate, including Atiku, considers the presidency.
"If it is God’s will for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to become President, even at the age of 90, it will happen. But for now, they should let President Tinubu continue his work of repositioning the nation," Akume said.
The SGF highlighted Tinubu’s reforms, such as removing fuel subsidies and harmonizing foreign exchange rates, as critical steps to rebuild Nigeria’s economy. "Very soon, Nigerians will begin to see the positive outcomes of these reforms," he added.
While Atiku has yet to confirm his candidacy for the 2027 election, speculation continues. Segun Sowunmi, a PDP chieftain and former spokesman for Atiku's campaign, noted that the former Vice President has not made any announcements but appears to be considering another run.
The debate signals ongoing political maneuvering as Tinubu’s administration seeks to consolidate its position ahead of the next election cycle.
