Abigail Chams a Tanzanian singer

Abigail Chams is a Tanzanian singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose pop career joins Bongo Flava and Afro-R&B with the discipline of a trained live musician. Born Abigail Chamungwana, she can move from piano and violin to guitar, drums and flute, then sing in Kiswahili, English or French. Her early gospel recordings and online covers introduced the talent; Sony Music Africa gave it a wider platform in 2022.

The 5 EP, “Nani?” with Marioo and “Me Too” with Harmonize expanded her East African audience, while a 2025 BET nomination placed her before a global one. On X, she also presents the advocacy work that has grown beside the music rather than behind it.

Who is Abigail Chams? Abigail Chams is Tanzanian singer Abigail Chamungwana, a pianist, violinist, guitarist, drummer and flautist whose Afro-R&B and Bongo Flava catalogue includes “Nani?”, “Milele,” “Muhibu,” “Me Too” and “Your Loss.” She is a Sony Music Africa artist, UNICEF Youth Advocate and 2025 BET Best New International Act nominee.

Tanzanian Heritage and Identity Through Five Instruments

Abigail Chams’ musicianship began with instruments, not a vocal booth. Piano gave her the first language of melody; violin added discipline and pitch; guitar, drums and flute widened her understanding of arrangement and performance. Her records can therefore be polished pop while still sounding shaped by a working musician.

Her sound is equally broad. Rolling Stone Africa’s 2025 cover profile described Afro-R&B coloured by Tanzanian influences including taarab, Bongo Flava and occasional amapiano. Abigail framed the choice as an artistic principle:

“It’s more important to me to create music that has substance than to conform to trends.”

That sentence gives the best route into her catalogue. “Nani?” is melodic East African pop; “Milele” carries romantic patience; “Me Too” is a Bongo Flava duet; and “Your Loss” turns toward dancehall and Afrobeats confidence. Together they test how far a classically trained ear can travel inside contemporary African pop.

XTRAfrica’s verified Abigail Chams songs page currently centres “Me Too.” Its leading-hyphen address is the live Wix catalogue route and should be preserved exactly when editors connect the Artist Profile button.
