Zuchu is a Zanzibar-born Tanzanian singer
Zuchu, born Zuhura Othman Soud, is a Tanzanian singer and songwriter from Zanzibar whose expressive Swahili love songs have made her one of East Africa’s most recognisable female performers.
Introduced nationally by WCB Wasafi in 2020, she moved quickly from a promising newcomer to a major Bongo Flava voice through songs such as “Wana,” “Sukari,” “Kwikwi” and “Honey.” She also uses her official X profile to communicate with listeners. Her career combines the melodic influence of taarab, inherited through her mother Khadija Kopa, with contemporary pop production, dance performance and a strong digital audience.

Early Life and Creative Roots

Music was already part of her family world. Her mother, Khadija Kopa, is one of Tanzania’s best-known taarab singers. Growing up close to that tradition exposed Zuchu to Swahili poetic expression, dramatic vocal delivery and songs built around love, dignity, conflict and everyday social relationships.
Those qualities later remained audible even when her productions moved into modern Bongo Flava, Afropop and dance-oriented sounds.
Zuchu’s rise was not simply a case of inheriting a famous surname. She had to prove that she could write, sing and hold an audience in her own right. Khadija Kopa helped connect her to WCB Wasafi, but the decisive moment was an audition before Diamond Platnumz. Zuchu performed “Wana,” and the song that demonstrated her ability during the audition later became her formal debut single.
Breakthrough and Rise to Fame
WCB Wasafi publicly introduced Zuchu in April 2020. The timing could have been difficult: the COVID-19 period had interrupted conventional concerts and promotion. Yet digital distribution gave her work a rapid route to listeners. Her debut project, I Am Zuchu, presented a singer who could move between intimate romance, confident pop and collaborations while remaining grounded in Kiswahili.
