Sub-Saharan Africa, encompassing countries south of the Sahara Desert such as Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, is on the brink of a digital transformation with the advent of 5G technology.
The GSMA's "The Mobile Economy Sub-Saharan Africa 2023" report forecasts a substantial $11 billion boost to the region's economy by 2030, attributed to 5G's integration. As of September 2023, 27 operators across 16 countries have initiated commercial 5G services, signifying a burgeoning momentum despite the current dominance of 3G and growing adoption of 4G networks.
5G's potential in Sub-Saharan Africa is not just in speed enhancement but in revolutionizing sectors like manufacturing and services, which are projected to reap 32% and 29% of the benefits, respectively.
The technology's deployment, especially in urban and industrial areas, is expected to escalate in the latter half of this decade, with a predicted 226 million connections by 2030. Nigeria and South Africa are anticipated to lead this surge, representing nearly half of the 5G connections.
Despite the optimism, the transition to 5G entails navigating the region's unique connectivity landscape and ensuring cost-effective network deployment.
With 3G still prevalent in 2022, the gradual shift to 4G sets a foundation for 5G's eventual adoption, highlighting the need for strategic investments and policy frameworks to maximize 5G's economic and societal impacts across Sub-Saharan Africa.
