ABUJA, Nigeria — 26 August 2026: President Bola Tinubu has ordered Nigeria’s armed forces, police, State Security Service and other intelligence agencies to launch a coordinated rescue operation for people abducted during attacks in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State. The directive, announced on Tuesday, adds federal command to an operation previously led by state and local security authorities.

The order is confirmed. The number of people abducted and the number killed remains unsettled because official statements and early reports do not agree.

What did Tinubu order after the Niger State mass kidnapping? President Bola Tinubu directed Nigeria’s military, police and intelligence agencies to coordinate an immediate rescue operation for people abducted in Borgu. He also requested regular briefings from security chiefs, while authorities continue to verify the number of captives and casualties.

Federal agencies ordered into a coordinated rescue

A statement issued by presidential adviser Bayo Onanuga said Tinubu directed the Armed Forces, Nigeria Police Force, State Security Service and relevant intelligence agencies to act together. The PUNCH reported that the president also instructed service chiefs to brief him regularly until everyone taken in the attacks is accounted for.

An earlier report carrying the presidential statement was published at 4:14 PM West Africa Time on 25 August. It said the federal government would support Niger State with security reinforcement, recovery and relief measures. This is a material escalation from the state response reported on 23 August. XTRAfrica’s initial Borgu report documented Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago’s order for security agencies to intensify rescue efforts while officials worked to establish how many people had been taken. Updating that report keeps the developing operation, corrections and future rescue announcements on one page.

What authorities have confirmed about the attacks

The Niger State Government said suspected attackers entered Gidan-Zana and Kpenya communities in Dekara District on Friday, 21 August, before attacking Kpenya Mosque during Juma’at prayers. An unspecified number of worshippers were abducted, while some residents escaped into surrounding areas, according to the state statement reported by Channels Television.

Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun separately confirmed that people were taken from the mosque after attacks in several villages. The Associated Press reported that residents estimated 60 to 80 people were missing, while Borgu council chairman Abdullahi Mohammed Nasir said at least 60 were kidnapped. Those figures are estimates, not a final official count.

No group had claimed responsibility in the latest opened police-sourced reporting. Descriptions of a particular militant organization as responsible should therefore remain attributed unless investigators issue a formal identification.

Why the viral video does not settle the numbers

A video circulated on Facebook and WhatsApp two days after the attack, showing a large group seated in a forested area under armed guard. Four residents told Reuters they recognized people from Dekara. However, Reuters reported through The Straits Times that it could not independently verify the video’s exact date or location.

The footage supports the conclusion that residents recognized some captives, but it does not prove claims that 500 or 600 people were abducted. Counting people from moving or incomplete footage is unreliable, and state authorities have explicitly asked the public not to circulate unverified casualty or abduction totals.

The death toll is also unresolved. Early police reporting carried by AP said no lives had been lost in the Friday attacks, while the later presidential statement referred to citizens being killed. Xinhua’s account of the conflicting positions did not establish a final toll. XTRAfrica is therefore not presenting any numerical death figure as confirmed.

Difficult terrain may slow the operation

Police said a collapsed bridge, poor roads and difficult terrain were complicating access to the affected communities. The Borgu–Kainji corridor has experienced repeated raids, including the January attack on Kasuwan Daji market. The area’s forest routes and dispersed settlements make verification and rapid deployment difficult.

The latest incident also sits within Nigeria’s wider abduction crisis, which has affected schools, places of worship and rural communities. XTRAfrica previously examined how kidnapping networks have spread beyond older northern hotspots.

The next decisive update should come from the presidency, Niger State Government, military or police: a verified count, confirmed rescue, arrests, or an official identification of the attackers. Until then, reports about hundreds of captives or a precise death toll should be treated as claims rather than settled facts.
