ABUJA, Nigeria — 8 September 2026: FIFA and the Confederation of African Football have told the Nigeria Football Federation to keep its electoral process suspended while they assess the leadership and governance crisis. The two bodies have not announced a final decision and plan to send a joint mission to Abuja.

Has FIFA cancelled the NFF election? FIFA and CAF have ordered the electoral process to remain suspended while they review the federation’s leadership crisis. No final governance decision or sanction has been announced, and a joint assessment mission to Abuja is the next confirmed step.

What FIFA and CAF told the NFF

The directive appears in a letter dated 7 September and addressed to NFF Deputy General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme. Eyewitness News reported that FIFA and CAF are examining the legal, administrative, governance and electoral implications of recent events at the federation.

The letter says no further electoral steps or decisions should be taken until the assessment is complete. It also says the pause is intended to preserve the status quo, not to validate or reject any position advanced by Nigerian football stakeholders.

That distinction is important. FIFA and CAF have not imposed a sanction on Nigeria, appointed a normalisation committee or endorsed a replacement leadership structure. News Central’s account of the letter likewise says the governing bodies have not reached conclusions about what should happen next.

Why the 27 September election was already uncertain

The NFF had scheduled its Elective Congress for 27 September in Lafia, Nasarawa State. An official NFF notice published on 29 July said the congress would elect a new Executive Committee for a four-year term.

That timetable was disrupted on 27 August when NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and members of the Executive Committee resigned. The federation then announced that all preparations for the election had been suspended while wider reforms were discussed with FIFA and CAF.

The new international instruction therefore reinforces an existing domestic pause. It also makes clear that electoral work cannot restart until FIFA and CAF finish their review or issue a further direction.

XTRAfrica’s report on Ibrahim Gusau’s resignation and the NFF transition explains how the leadership departures created uncertainty over interim authority and the election timetable.

Abuja mission will test the competing positions

FIFA and CAF say their joint mission will meet the NFF administration, federation members, electoral bodies and representatives of the Federal Government, including the National Sports Commission. Ikpeme has been asked to act as the main contact with the two governing bodies until further notice.

AdomOnline’s reproduction of the letter says the mission is meant to establish the facts and consider whether any issue requires action under FIFA, CAF or NFF rules. Recommendations may follow, but the review remains open.

The clarification follows a 1 September meeting at FIFA headquarters in Zurich. After that meeting, the NFF said FIFA had accepted the principal officers’ resignations and that discussions on a reform roadmap would continue. The latest letter narrows the immediate position: talks are continuing, but no final governance settlement has been reached.

What the pause means for Nigerian football

Day-to-day football activity does not automatically stop because the electoral process is frozen. National teams and domestic competitions can continue under the administrative arrangements already in place. Nigeria’s squad planning, including Arthur Okonkwo’s Super Eagles call-up, remains separate from the unresolved leadership process.

The pause does, however, delay certainty over who will be eligible to contest, which electoral timetable will apply and what reforms must be completed first. The original roadmap included candidate screening, appeals, publication of a final list and campaigning before the congress. Those steps cannot safely be treated as active now.

The situation also places closer attention on communication between the interim secretariat, the Sports Commission and football’s international governing bodies. Any claim that one stakeholder has already secured FIFA’s approval should be tested against the letter’s explicit statement that no conclusion has been reached.

What happens next

The next verifiable milestone is the joint FIFA-CAF visit to Abuja. The letter did not give a confirmed arrival date, so reports naming a specific day should remain provisional unless FIFA, CAF or the NFF publishes a schedule.

After the meetings, the governing bodies may submit recommendations or proposals to their competent decision-making bodies. Until then, the 27 September election remains on hold, Ikpeme remains the designated contact for the assessment, and the final structure of the NFF transition is unresolved.
