GAROUA, Cameroon — Bryan Mbeumo scored while wearing Cameroon’s armband as the Indomitable Lions beat Comoros 3-1 in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. His 48th-minute goal gave Cameroon a two-goal lead and added a completed-match milestone to the captaincy announcement that had driven interest in his biography before kickoff.

Mbeumo scored Cameroon’s second goal in a 3-1 victory over Comoros in Garoua. He struck three minutes after half-time, before Warmed Omari replied for Comoros and Danny Namaso restored the two-goal advantage. The armband applied to this match; no permanent captaincy has been announced.

Cameroon entered the match with Mbeumo selected to captain the side and Arthur Avom and Samuel Kotto named as deputies. Coach David Pagou’s pre-match wording tied the arrangement to the Comoros qualifier, so it should not yet be reported as a permanent appointment.

On the field, David Nyengue opened the scoring in the 39th minute. Mbeumo doubled the lead in the 48th, shortly after the restart. CAF’s official match report says Comoros responded through Warmed Omari in the 51st minute before Namaso made it 3-1 in the 81st.

The sequence made Mbeumo’s goal important. It created a cushion, and although Comoros quickly cut it, Cameroon did not surrender the lead. The beIN Sports match account explicitly links the goal to the responsibility he carried as captain.

What the result means for Cameroon

The win gives Cameroon three points at the start of Group G. ESPN’s match record confirms the 3-1 score and the four goalscorers, while CAF places the result alongside opening wins for Côte d’Ivoire and Zimbabwe.

It was also Pagou’s first competitive match of this qualifying cycle. Cameroon reached the previous AFCON quarter-finals but are now beginning another campaign with a reworked leadership structure and several players carrying greater responsibility.

The performance was productive rather than flawless. Comoros scored from a set-piece soon after Mbeumo’s goal and briefly threatened to change the match. Cameroon’s late third goal brought control back to the scoreline.

It was also Pagou’s first competitive match of this qualifying cycle. Cameroon reached the previous AFCON quarter-finals but are now beginning another campaign with a reworked leadership structure and several players carrying greater responsibility.

Pagou said afterwards that the team had been somewhat laboured but achieved the central objective of scoring. In Foot Africa’s post-match account, the coach described Mbeumo as a top-level player and the team’s playmaker, saying he had asked the forward to take more responsibility.

Why this is a follow-up, not a second biography

XTRAfrica’s completed Bryan Mbeumo biography explains his Avallon childhood, Cameroonian family connection, Troyes development, Brentford rise, Manchester United move and national-team choice. It also records the original captaincy announcement and the limit of that decision.

The new development is the completed result. Mbeumo did not merely walk out with the armband; he scored in a win and received direct public backing from his coach afterwards. That creates a clear linked update without repeating his life story.

It also resolves one pre-match uncertainty: the captaincy experiment produced an immediate sporting contribution. What remains unresolved is whether Pagou will retain Mbeumo as captain for the next qualifier against Congo or return the armband to another senior player.

Cameroon travel to face Congo in their next qualifier. The short turnaround will test the squad, and Pagou said the team would prepare directly for that match rather than dwell on the opening result.

For Mbeumo, the next questions are practical. Will he keep the armband? Can he repeat the scoring impact away from home? And will Pagou continue to use him as the central attacking reference rather than only as a right-sided forward?

The verified position after the opening match is straightforward: Mbeumo captained Cameroon against Comoros, scored in the 48th minute and helped deliver a 3-1 victory. Any claim that he has been appointed permanent captain still requires a separate official announcement.
