OpenAI has officially introduced its new Sora video generator to the public, marking another major move in the competitive world of AI tools. The announcement on Monday highlighted the release of the latest version, Sora Turbo, which promises faster performance and the ability to create high-definition videos up to 22 seconds long.
This development comes as tech companies like Google and Meta are also working on similar AI-powered video tools. However, these tools have yet to live up to the high expectations sparked by the release of ChatGPT two years ago.
During the launch, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman admitted that the technology is still in its early stages but assured users, "it's going to get a lot, lot better."
For now, the Sora video generator will be available to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers, though it won’t yet be accessible in Europe or the UK. Altman acknowledged this limitation during a livestream, saying, "We're going to try our hardest to be able to launch there."
Basic users will have access to create up to 50 videos per month in standard definition. Sora also allows users to choose from different aspect ratios and integrate existing media into their projects.
To address concerns about misuse, OpenAI has implemented safeguards, including verification metadata and visible watermarks. Additionally, the platform temporarily blocks videos featuring real people as part of its efforts to prevent deepfake misuse.
Despite the exciting launch, Sora isn’t without its challenges. Early testers have noted some inconsistencies in realism and difficulties handling complex video sequences. One OpenAI team member offered a reality check during the livestream:
"If you come into Sora with the expectation that you'll just be able to click a button and generate a feature film, I think you're coming in with the wrong expectation."
The introduction of Sora signals OpenAI’s continued push into the AI-powered creative tools market while addressing concerns about safety and ethical use.
