Namibia's first female president, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah
In a historic moment that captured the attention of the world, Namibia swore in its first female president, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, on March 21, 2025. This important day was not just about a new president taking office – it was also the 35th anniversary of Namibia’s independence from apartheid South Africa. The event became a double celebration of freedom and progress.
The colorful inauguration ceremony was held at State House in Windhoek, instead of the Independence Stadium, because of unusual heavy rains. Despite the change of venue, the atmosphere was filled with joy, applause, and excitement. Heads of state and leaders from across Africa including Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Angola came to witness this historic occasion.
Who is Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah?
Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, often called "NNN", is a 72-year-old veteran politician and long-time member of the ruling party, SWAPO. She has served the country for decades, including as Foreign Minister and more recently as Vice President. Nandi-Ndaitwah played a big role in the fight for Namibia’s freedom and spent time in exile during the liberation struggle.
Her rise to the presidency follows her victory in the November 2024 elections, where she won 58% of the vote. Even though there were delays and challenges during the election, her win was clear and widely accepted. The opposition party, Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), tried to challenge the results but failed.
A Message of Unity and Hope
In her inaugural speech, President Nandi-Ndaitwah recognized the importance of being the first woman to lead Namibia. She said that while breaking the glass ceiling is important, people voted for her because of her skills and experience, not just her gender.
She also reminded Namibians that there’s still a lot of work to do, especially in tackling big challenges like:
High youth unemployment (44% of young people were jobless in 2023)
Poverty and inequality
Economic growth and job creation
She promised to focus on creating at least 500,000 jobs in the next five years by investing in sectors like agriculture, fishing, sports, and creative industries. To do this, Namibia needs to attract investments worth 85 billion Namibian dollars (about $4.67 billion).
Strong Support from Africa and the World
Many African leaders and global friends celebrated the event. Kenyan President William Ruto called it a proud moment not only for Namibia but for all of Africa. He praised Nandi-Ndaitwah’s leadership and her lifelong service to the country. Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz also attended and expressed his country’s continued friendship and strong ties with Namibia.
During his visit, the Cuban Prime Minister also met with Namibian leaders to discuss ways to deepen cooperation, showing how Namibia continues to build international friendships.
Breaking Barriers, Inspiring Generations
People across the continent, especially women, felt inspired by President Nandi-Ndaitwah's achievement. Many said it was a sign that more women could rise to leadership roles. Former South African Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka said she would be a role model for women of all ages.
However, Nandi-Ndaitwah also reminded people that her leadership should be judged fairly, just like any other president. “If things go wrong, people should not say it’s because I’m a woman,” she said.
Looking Ahead
Namibia is a country rich in natural resources like uranium, diamonds, oil, and natural gas. With a population of around 3 million people, it has potential for economic growth, especially if young people are given opportunities.
As Namibia enters this new chapter, many are hopeful that President Nandi-Ndaitwah will lead the country to a better future. Her presidency marks not just a change in leadership but a symbol of progress, unity, and hope for all Namibians—especially the younger generation looking for jobs and opportunities.
