A powerful hailstorm hit Bugala Island, killing three people, injuring several, and damaging police barracks. Authorities are assessing the destruction.

A strong hailstorm hit Bugala Island in Kalangala District early Saturday morning, leading to the deaths of three people, including a police officer. Several others were injured, and authorities have started rescue operations to assess the damage.

The storm began at around 7:21 AM, affecting many areas, including the local police barracks and part of the station’s offices. According to Southern Region Police Spokesperson SP Twaha Kasirye, the victims include Detective Sergeant Michael Mujasi and two civilians whose names have not yet been confirmed.

“The injured have been rushed to Kalangala Health Centre IV for urgent medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased have been taken to Kalangala Hospital mortuary,” SP Kasirye said.

The storm came from the eastern side of Kalangala and left many officers without shelter. Emergency teams are now helping those affected and checking the full extent of the destruction.

Kalangala District is part of the Ssese Islands on Lake Victoria. Although the area sometimes experiences extreme weather, such severe hailstorms are not common. Authorities have advised residents to stay alert as weather conditions in the region continue to change unexpectedly.
