  • A global hunger monitor has warned of a realistic chance of famine in 14 areas across Sudan if the ongoing conflict between military factions intensifies. The affected regions include parts of the capital Khartoum, Darfur, Kordofan, and El Gezira State, according to an update from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC). As per the latest IPC assessment, approximately 755,000 people in Sudan are facing "catastrophe," the most severe level of extreme hunger. Overall, 8.5 million people, representing 18% of the population, are experiencing food shortages that could lead to acute malnutrition and death or necessitate emergency coping strategies. The conflict between Sudan's army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which began in April last year, has spread throughout the country, triggering ethnically driven violence in Darfur and causing the world's largest internal displacement crisis. The IPC's warning suggests that famine could occur with reasonable probability under a worst-case scenario in the 14 identified areas. The IPC's criteria for declaring a famine include extreme food shortages affecting at least 20% of the population, acute malnutrition in at least 30% of children, and a daily death rate of two people per 10,000 due to starvation, malnutrition, or disease. • Harsher Penalties Proposed Ghana's parliament has passed a stringent bill targeting the LGBTQ+ community, introducing up to three years of imprisonment for individuals identifying as LGBTQ+ and up to five years for those involved in LGBTQ+ organizations. The legislation, supported by major political parties, awaits President Nana Akufo-Addo's approval, who has indicated his decision would align with public consensus. The move amplifies existing laws where gay sex is punishable by a three-year term . International Concerns and Local Response The bill has drawn criticism from international bodies like Amnesty International and UNAIDS for threatening basic human rights and inciting potential violence against LGBTQ+ individuals. It also proposes up to 10 years in jail for LGBTQ+ advocacy directed at minors and mandates public reporting of LGBTQ+ individuals. This legislative action follows the closure of Accra's first LGBTQ+ community center in 2021 amidst widespread protests and disapproval from religious and traditional leaders, emphasizing the country's conservative stance on LGBTQ+ issues. • Sagal Abdi-Wali: Election Win and Somali-British Background

Who is Sagal Abdi-Wali? Explore her Somali background, Camden career and election as Labour MP for Holborn and St Pancras. Sagal Abdi-Wali has been elected Labour MP for Holborn and St Pancras, taking her career from Camden Council to the UK Parliament. Born in Somalia, she came to Britain as a child refugee and grew up in the London borough she would later lead. Her victory in the 8 October 2026 by-election brings a politician with a background in community work and housing into national office. It also gives her story a wider African connection: the journey from a family fleeing war to representing a constituency in the country where they rebuilt their lives. Who is Sagal Abdi-Wali? Sagal Abdi-Wali is a Somali-born British Labour politician elected MP for Holborn and St Pancras in October 2026. Previously a Camden councillor, housing cabinet member and council leader, she has linked her commitment to public service to the borough that welcomed her family as refugees. The result that brought her into Parliament Camden Council's official results record 12,292 votes for Abdi-Wali and 8,928 for Green Party leader Zack Polanski. That gave Labour a majority of 3,364. Turnout was 38.76%. The seat had been vacated by former prime minister Keir Starmer. Winning it meant retaining the constituency for Labour, while giving its new representative a different personal history and local-government record. The result marks a move from borough administration to national lawmaking. Housing and community services were central to her local work; she will now represent the constituency in Parliament. From Somalia to a childhood in Camden Abdi-Wali has described Camden as the place where she was raised and educated after arriving with her family as a child refugee from Somalia. In a 2019 article she wrote for LabourList , she connected that upbringing with her work for the council and volunteering for local charities and community groups. At the time, she was seeking to become Labour's London Assembly candidate for Barnet and Camden. The article shows that her political ambitions predated the parliamentary contest by several years. At the time, she was seeking to become Labour's London Assembly candidate for Barnet and Camden. The article shows that her political ambitions predated the parliamentary contest by several years. ADVERTISEMENT She described solidarity, justice and bringing communities together as reasons for joining Labour. Those are her stated political values, rather than an independent assessment of her performance. Her refugee background explains an important part of her childhood. It does not describe her present immigration status. Full Fact's September 2026 clarification rejected claims that she was currently seeking asylum, pointing to public records listing British nationality. Housing work before council leadership Abdi-Wali became a Camden Square councillor in 2022. Before leading the council, she served as Cabinet Member for Better Homes. Camden's May 2024 announcement sets out what that housing role involved: improving council homes and estates, tenant and leaseholder participation, private rented accommodation, landlord services and repairs. The portfolio placed her within the practical work of local government. Housing policy affects not only the supply of homes but also maintenance, safety and residents' ability to influence decisions about their estates. In the same announcement, she stressed the importance of working with residents: “Resident participation, scrutiny and involvement is built into our housing process.” Becoming Camden's council leader Camden Labour announced her election as council leader on 20 May 2026 . The party identified her as a Camden Square councillor and former housing cabinet member. In her leadership speech, Abdi-Wali linked public service to the welcome her family had received. She also addressed pressures on housing, social care and household finances, alongside opportunities for young people and community cohesion. ADVERTISEMENT The move broadened her responsibilities beyond one cabinet portfolio. By the time she contested the parliamentary seat, her public career therefore included both a specialist housing role and borough-wide leadership. What she campaigned to do Her parliamentary campaign biography emphasised affordable housing, homelessness, stronger communities, living costs and access to employment. These priorities connect with the housing and community work that preceded her election. They also provide a basis for following her future parliamentary activity: how she represents local concerns, scrutinises government and advances the proposals she supported as a candidate. An election with Somali diaspora interest The result attracted attention beyond Britain. Kenya's The Star reported that Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale congratulated Abdi-Wali on 9 October, describing her success as an inspiration to women, young people and the Somali community. That response illustrates the cross-border connection in her story. She represents a London constituency, while her background also resonates with people following Somali diaspora participation in public life. Her election is best understood through both aspects: the local career that brought her to Parliament and the refugee childhood she has publicly described. • Judith Suminwa set DRC priorities as critics push back in Washington

DRC PM Suminwa outlines priorities in US as civil society questions government response. Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka outlined the Democratic Republic of Congo’s priorities on security, humanitarian response and economic reform during her visit to the United States, as civil society groups raised concerns over the government’s effectiveness. Speaking alongside international engagements linked to the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women, Suminwa addressed the recent drone strike in Goma, the ongoing crisis in eastern DRC and structural economic challenges. The UN session, held in March 2026, focuses on gender equality and development priorities . On the March 10 bombing in Goma that killed a French humanitarian worker, the government announced a judicial investigation to establish responsibility. Authorities have tasked military prosecutors with clarifying the incident and initiating legal proceedings if required. The killing was separately confirmed by UNICEF, which reported the death of one of its staff members in the city. Suminwa also emphasized the need to restore humanitarian access, including reopening Goma airport to facilitate aid delivery to affected populations. Eastern DRC continues to face a severe humanitarian crisis marked by displacement and insecurity, with international reporting highlighting ongoing violence and limited access to assistance . However, Jean-Claude Mputu, spokesperson for the “Congo Is Not for Sale” (CNPAV) movement, challenged the government’s response. He argued that attention to the Goma incident reflects unequal treatment, pointing to long-standing violence affecting Congolese civilians. He called for transparency in the investigation and publication of its findings. Mputu further criticized what he described as a focus on short-term humanitarian measures rather than addressing the root causes of the conflict. He said durable peace would require implementation of existing agreements and inclusive political dialogue to stabilize the country. On the economic front, Suminwa highlighted plans to promote local processing of mineral resources and expand entrepreneurship as part of efforts to reduce youth unemployment. With a population exceeding 100 million, the DRC faces significant pressure to generate jobs and diversify its economy. Civil society representatives, however, expressed doubts about the feasibility of these reforms. Mputu pointed to persistent corruption in the mining sector and governance challenges, arguing that structural weaknesses continue to undermine economic transformation. Suminwa, the first woman to serve as Prime Minister of the DRC, addressed skepticism surrounding her leadership, stating that the ability to govern effectively should not be judged by gender. Critics, however, maintain that the central issue remains the government’s capacity to respond to ongoing security and socio-economic challenges. • Ernest Bai Koroma Returns to Sierra Leone

Ernest Bai Koroma has returned to Sierra Leone after more than two years in Nigeria, following the July discontinuance of criminal proceedings. The former president is back in Freetown after more than two years in Nigeria and discontinued charges. Former Sierra Leone president Ernest Bai Koroma returned to Freetown on Sunday, 6 September 2026, after living in Nigeria for more than two years. His return followed the July discontinuance of criminal proceedings connected to the November 2023 attacks that Sierra Leone's authorities described as an attempted coup. Why has Ernest Bai Koroma returned to Sierra Leone? Sierra Leone's attorney-general discontinued the criminal proceedings against the former president in July, removing the legal obstacle to his return. Koroma then travelled from Nigeria to Freetown on 6 September, where government and opposition representatives received him at the airport. What happened in Freetown AFP reported through TV5Monde that Koroma arrived in the Sierra Leonean capital on Sunday and told journalists at the airport that he was happy to be home. The report says former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo and Nigeria's foreign minister, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, accompanied him. Koroma was welcomed by his daughter, Sierra Leone's foreign minister Mohamed Rahman Swarray and senior figures from the opposition All People's Congress, according to the same account. That mix of government, family and party representatives made the arrival a political as well as personal event. Sahara Reporters documented former Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan's public farewell message. Jonathan said Nigeria had provided Koroma with support and that regional figures had encouraged dialogue with Sierra Leonean authorities. Why Koroma had been in Nigeria Koroma governed Sierra Leone from 2007 to 2018. He was charged in January 2024 with treason, misprision of treason and related offences arising from the authorities' investigation of the November 2023 violence in Freetown. He denied involvement. A court allowed him to travel to Nigeria for medical treatment. Although the original permission was limited, Koroma remained there for more than two years under a regional arrangement while political and legal discussions continued. The criminal proceedings were discontinued in July 2026. The Guardian Nigeria reported that Nigeria's federal government helped facilitate his safe return after the charges were withdrawn. A discontinued case is not the same as a trial acquittal, so coverage should not claim that a court heard the evidence and declared him innocent. ADVERTISEMENT Why Koroma had been in Nigeria Koroma governed Sierra Leone from 2007 to 2018. ADVERTISEMENT What the discontinued proceedings mean Sierra Leone's attorney-general filed a notice ending the prosecution and said Koroma was free to return. The decision removed his bail restrictions and the immediate criminal case against him. Public explanations did not establish a judicial finding about his alleged role in the 2023 attacks. Those attacks targeted military facilities, prisons and police stations. Sierra Leone's government described them as an attempted coup. Koroma repeatedly rejected accusations that he was involved, and the subsequent discontinuance means those allegations should still be reported as allegations rather than settled fact. This distinction matters as the country discusses reconciliation. Legal closure of the pending proceedings may lower one source of political tension, but it does not erase disagreements over the violence, the investigation or relations between the government and the APC. Why the return matters across West Africa Koroma's stay in Nigeria and the involvement of former regional leaders made the episode an ECOWAS diplomacy story. The return demonstrates how informal engagement by elder statesmen can operate alongside formal court and government processes. Trending Now Kenya, China Sign Deal for 80 Off-Grid Solar Systems . XTRAfrica's profile of ECOWAS Commission president Birame Diop explains the institution's current regional challenges, while earlier coverage of the proposed ECOWAS single currency shows how integration depends on cooperation beyond security crises. Koroma's arrival does not itself announce a new public office, electoral campaign or formal mediation role. Any claim about his next political move would be speculation unless he, the APC or Sierra Leone's authorities issue a clear statement. The next substantive developments will be whether Koroma addresses supporters, meets President Julius Maada Bio or receives a defined party or peace-building role. For now, the confirmed update is his physical return and the legal change that made it possible. • Congolese Group Files ICC Communication Naming Kagame, Kabila

Front Uni pour la RDC says it filed an ICC communication naming Paul Kagame, Joseph Kabila and three AFC/M23 leaders over alleged crimes in eastern DRC. Front Uni pour la RDC says it submitted material to the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in The Hague naming Rwandan President Paul Kagame, former DRC president Joseph Kabila and three AFC/M23 leaders over alleged crimes committed in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. THE HAGUE, Netherlands — September 18, 2026 — A Belgium-based Congolese diaspora organization says it has submitted a dossier to the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) naming Rwandan President Paul Kagame, former Congolese president Joseph Kabila, and AFC/M23 leaders Corneille Nangaa, Bertrand Bisimwa and Sultani Makenga in connection with alleged crimes in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The organization, Front Uni pour la RDC, says the material was delivered in The Hague on September 16, 2026. Congolese media began reporting the development the following day. Actu30 reported that the group described the alleged conduct as war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide, including allegations involving massacres, torture, sexual violence, enforced disappearances and forced displacement. What Front Uni says it submitted According to Actu30 and other Congolese outlets that reported the filing, Front Uni says its dossier contains material concerning alleged abuses in several areas of eastern DRC, including Goma, Bukavu, Rutshuru, Masisi, Nyiragongo, Lubero, Walikale, Kalehe, Kabare and Walungu. The organization says it named Sultani Makenga in connection with the military leadership of M23, Bertrand Bisimwa in connection with M23's political leadership and Corneille Nangaa as leader of the Congo River Alliance, or AFC. Front Uni also accuses Paul Kagame of political and military support for the AFC/M23 coalition and alleges that Joseph Kabila played a supporting role. A filing to the ICC is not the same as an ICC case The legal status of the submission is important. Front Uni also accuses Paul Kagame of political and military support for the AFC/M23 coalition and alleges that Joseph Kabila played a supporting role. ADVERTISEMENT A filing to the ICC is not the same as an ICC case The legal status of the submission is important. Congolese reports have commonly described the move as a "complaint" or plainte . Under ICC procedure, however, individuals, groups and non-governmental organizations may submit information about alleged crimes to the Prosecutor under Article 15 of the Rome Statute. The ICC's own Office of the Prosecutor submission portal explains that any individual, group, state, intergovernmental organization or NGO may provide such information. These submissions are commonly referred to as Article 15 communications. The Prosecutor then assesses the information to determine whether it concerns conduct within the Court's jurisdiction, whether it relates to an existing situation or investigation and whether further analysis is warranted. As of publication, the ICC has not publicly announced what action, if any, it will take in response to Front Uni's filing. Delegation also held a sit-in outside the Court Actu30 reported that after delivering the material, members of the Front Uni delegation held a sit-in outside the ICC headquarters in The Hague. A statement was reportedly read by Sonny Kabeya Mukanya, identified by the organization as its secretary-general. ADVERTISEMENT Front Uni also called on Congolese authorities to strengthen cooperation with the ICC and support international judicial examination of alleged crimes committed in eastern DRC. Who is Front Uni pour la RDC? Front Uni pour la RDC describes itself as a Congolese diaspora organization founded in Belgium and active across the Benelux and other Francophone Congolese communities. Its official website identifies the group as a non-profit association focused on sovereignty, civilian protection, international advocacy, justice and combating impunity. The organization says one of its core priorities is documenting alleged crimes against civilians and advocating before international institutions. Its public activities have included advocacy in European institutions, political discussions within the diaspora and assistance to families of Congolese soldiers and wounded military personnel. ICC already has a long-running DRC situation The new communication arrives against the background of the ICC's longstanding work in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is one of the Court's longest-running investigations. The ICC has previously prosecuted individuals including Thomas Lubanga, Germain Katanga and Bosco Ntaganda for crimes connected to conflicts in the country. ADVERTISEMENT The Office of the Prosecutor has also said that alleged crimes within the scope of the DRC situation have continued to be reported and that it has worked with Congolese authorities on accountability for international crimes. In its Policy on Complementarity and Cooperation , the Prosecutor's office described the DRC as one of the Court's longest-open investigations and noted ongoing work concerning alleged crimes and cooperation with national authorities. Whether the information submitted by Front Uni becomes relevant to an existing ICC investigation, triggers further analysis or leads to no further action will depend on the Prosecutor's assessment. What happens next The immediate next step lies with the Office of the Prosecutor. Under Article 15 procedures, prosecutors may screen the material, compare it with information already in their possession and determine whether it falls within the Court's jurisdiction or an existing investigative framework. There is no automatic timetable for a public response to an Article 15 communication. Front Uni says it wants the allegations examined as part of wider efforts to end impunity for violence in eastern Congo. Whether the submission produces any formal ICC action remains to be seen. Who is Steven Mendes? The Kaizer Chiefs midfielder won the 2026 COSAFA U20 Golden Boot after scoring six goals for South Africa. Steven Mendes is the Kaizer Chiefs development midfielder who delivered the decisive penalty in South Africa's 2-1 victory over Mozambique in the 2026 COSAFA Under-20 final on 27 September. The Johannesburg prospect finished the tournament with six goals and the Golden Boot as Amajita retained the regional title and secured a place at the 2027 Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana. Who is Steven Mendes? Steven Mendes is an 18-year-old South African midfielder in the Kaizer Chiefs development system and the national Under-20 team. Nicknamed “Stevie G” in local football coverage, he emerged as a leading prospect after scoring six goals, including the final's winner, to claim the 2026 COSAFA U20 Golden Boot. The Golden Boot run that put Mendes in focus Mendes entered the COSAFA tournament as one of Amajita's creative threats and quickly became its most productive scorer. He struck twice in the 2-0 group-stage win over Lesotho, with CAF recording his goals on either side of half-time. He then scored against Angola as South Africa took control of its group. The midfielder's composure became even more important in the knockout stage. Mendes converted two penalties in the 3-0 semi-final win over Zambia, a result that secured South Africa's place at the 2027 U20 AFCON . In the final, South Africa and host Mozambique were level at 1-1 when Amajita won a penalty in the 58th minute. Mendes scored from the spot, and the goal held up as the winner. TimesLIVE's final report confirmed that it was his sixth of the tournament, while iDiski Times reported that he received the Golden Boot. From the Kaizer Chiefs academy to Sweden and back Mendes joined the Kaizer Chiefs academy in August 2022 and initially played for the club's Under-15 side. He progressed to the Under-17 team and the reserve structure, while also earning selection for South Africa at youth level. In 2023, Chiefs named him among five academy players selected for the national Under-15 team after the club won the inaugural SAFA Technical Development Scheme trophy. His early promise led to an overseas opportunity. In August 2024, Kaizer Chiefs announced his move to Hammarby IF after a successful trial with the Swedish club. The announcement described him as a 16-year-old Johannesburg-born midfielder who had advanced rapidly through the Chiefs youth ranks. Mendes later returned to Naturena. In September 2026, iDiski Times reported that he had rejoined Chiefs in 2025 and was playing in the DStv Diski Challenge. That route keeps him close to the senior side while giving him regular development-level football. That route keeps him close to the senior side while giving him regular development-level football. The journey places Mendes within a broader Chiefs academy tradition. XTRAfrica's profile of Puso Dithejane follows another South African talent who passed through the club's development system before establishing a senior career elsewhere. Playing role and first-team ambition Mendes is a midfielder rather than a conventional centre-forward. His COSAFA return showed an ability to arrive in scoring positions and take responsibility from the penalty spot. Five of his six goals came before the final, then his match-winning penalty added a high-pressure moment to the tournament record. Kaizer Chiefs has continued to identify him as a youth-development player, and the club's semi-final preview highlighted his growing influence for South Africa U20. Mendes has also spoken publicly about using his international performances as a route toward the Chiefs first team. That step is not automatic. The senior midfield picture can change quickly, as shown by XTRAfrica's report on Thabo Cele's departure from Kaizer Chiefs . For Mendes, the immediate challenge is to turn one outstanding youth tournament into consistent club performances and future national-team selections. Personal and family status Mendes' public profile is centred on football. Reliable club and sports reports reviewed for this profile do not establish his relationship or parenthood status. The 2027 U20 AFCON is the next major international target. A strong showing there could raise Mendes' profile beyond Southern Africa, but his club progress will depend on performances in the Chiefs development structure and decisions by the senior coaching staff. His COSAFA success gives him momentum, not a guaranteed promotion.
