Africa | Elections Kenya Why Ruto was preferred over Tshisekedi as chair in EAC Election Bahati shalom Nov 29, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link William Ruto Wins EAC Chair Election, Focuses on Trade and Peace Kenya’s President William Ruto has been chosen to lead the East African Community (EAC) heads of state summit, taking over the role through the bloc’s rotational system. The summit, held in Arusha, also marked 25 years of EAC integration. DR Congo’s President Felix Tshisekedi, expected to take over from South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir, did not attend the meeting. Due to ongoing domestic and security challenges in DR Congo, some leaders doubted his ability to handle the role. Instead, they turned to Ruto as a stable choice. Leaders at the summit included Tanzania’s Samia Suluhu Hassan, Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni, Rwanda’s Paul Kagame, Somalia’s Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and South Sudan’s Salva Kiir. Somalia was next in line for the chairmanship, but it’s still aligning with the EAC systems. Ruto pledged to improve the lives of East Africans by boosting trade, investments, and regional competitiveness. He urged the EAC secretariat to finalize an economic partnership with the European Union, which allows Kenyan goods duty-free access to Europe. President Kagame supported Ruto’s push for stricter compliance with financial contributions from member states, proposing penalties for defaulters. Currently, Burundi, South Sudan, and DR Congo owe contributions for the 2024/25 fiscal year. Kagame said, "We need strict compliance measures because the current situation is neither acceptable nor sustainable." President Kiir emphasized enhancing peace, trade, and digital transformation. Meanwhile, President Samia called for unity, and Museveni advocated for removing trade barriers. • US Imposes Visa Restrictions on South Sudanese Officials Over Obstructed Humanitarian Aid | Xtrafricahttps://static.wixstatic.com/media/436149_ce11b77005c4414cbb3893412ebe8e21~mv2.webp

Africa | War & Conflicts US Imposes Visa Restrictions on South Sudanese Officials Over Obstructed Humanitarian Aid Ayize claire Aug 29, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller expressed deep concern over the situation Washington, D.C. – The United States has announced visa restrictions on individuals within the South Sudanese government and others who have hindered the delivery of humanitarian aid by imposing taxes on shipments, according to a statement released by the State Department on Friday. South Sudan, a nation ravaged by civil war from 2013 to 2018, continues to face one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises. Ongoing conflict, natural disasters, and widespread poverty have left millions in desperate need of assistance. The situation has been exacerbated by South Sudanese authorities reportedly delaying United Nations fuel tankers due to a tax dispute. This hold-up is jeopardizing the delivery of millions of dollars in critical aid during a time of dire need, U.N. missions in the region have reported. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller expressed deep concern over the situation, noting that despite prior assurances from the South Sudanese government, significant barriers remain to delivering aid. “Despite assurances, the government has yet to effectively reduce the unacceptably high costs, bureaucratic obstacles, and risks of providing humanitarian assistance to South Sudanese people in need, ” Miller stated. “This raises questions about its willingness and capacity to abide by its 2018 peace agreement commitment to create an enabling environment for the delivery of humanitarian assistance and protection.” The newly imposed visa restrictions will render the individuals involved ineligible for entry into the United States, underscoring the U.S. government's commitment to holding those accountable who obstruct life-saving aid during a humanitarian crisis. As South Sudan struggles to navigate its post-conflict challenges, the international community continues to watch closely, urging the government to honor its commitments and facilitate the free flow of humanitarian aid. Among those sanctioned are two leaders from the M23 rebel group, a Tutsi-led violent organization that has intensified its activities in eastern Congo this year. The list also includes two members of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR). "Both sustain the armed conflict, instability, and insecurity in the DRC, in particular through inciting violence," the EU Council stated. "In addition, they are responsible for serious human rights abuses, including killings, sexual violence, attacks on civilians, and child recruitment." Other individuals sanctioned include commanders from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), the Rwanda Defence Force, and the Collectif des Mouvements pour le Changement-Forces de Défense du Peuple (CMC-FDP). The entity sanctioned by the EU is the Alliance Fleuve Congo, a politico-military movement established in Kenya but operating in eastern Congo. The sanctions entail a travel ban and an asset freeze. Africa | War In DRC Corneille Nangaa Sentenced to Death in DR Congo: Court Seizes Assets and Imposes Heavy Fines Mbeki edmond Aug 9, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Corneille Nangaa a leader of AFC " Alliance fleuve Congo " Corneille Nangaa, leader of the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC), which includes the M23 group, along with 25 others, primarily M23 leaders, were handed death sentences by the Kinshasa military court. The convictions stemmed from charges of treason and forming an anti-government movement. Notably, five of the 26 defendants—Eric Nkuba Malembe, Nangaa Baseyane, Safari Bishori Luc, Nkangya Nyamacho, and Nicaise Samafu Makinu—were tried in closed sessions. All the defendants denied the charges. The court further decreed the seizure of all assets belonging to Corneille Nangaa and his wife, Yvette Lubanda. Additionally, a fine of one billion US dollars was imposed on all the defendants for the extensive damage and losses inflicted upon DR Congo. After the ruling, Nangaa expressed his thoughts in a message on X's website, calling the court's decision "a sign of the government's fear, indicating its impending collapse." The defense team voiced concerns over the trial, arguing that they were not given sufficient time to prepare their clients' defenses during the two-week proceedings. One lawyer highlighted the lack of evidence against Baseane Nangaa, Corneille Nangaa's uncle, who claimed during the trial that his only connection was sharing the last name. In response to the verdict, Constant Mutamba, the Minister of Justice of DR Congo, called the case a "historic day" for the millions affected by the war in Congo, attributing the conflict to provocation by Rwanda. He asserted that "all punishments will be carried out without exception, including the death penalty." Africa | Protests & Movements UK PM Condemns Far-Right Violence After Protests Sparked by Rwandan Immigrant Ayize claire Aug 5, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer (right) condemns far-right violence following protests sparked by 17-year-old Axel Muganwa Rudakubana (left) Southport, UK - Britain has identified 17-year-old Axel Muganwa Rudakubana as the suspect charged with the murder of three young girls in Southport and the riots that have erupted nationwide. Rudakubana, originally from Cardiff with Rwandan roots, was presented in Liverpool court on Thursday. Despite being a minor, Judge Andrew Menary allowed his identity to be revealed due to the “idiotic rioting” that followed the attack. Rudakubana faces three counts of murder and ten counts of attempted murder. The tragic incident occurred at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class on Monday, resulting in the deaths of Alice Dasilva Aguiar, 9, Bebe King, 6, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7. Eight other children and two adults were also critically injured. Rudakubana was reportedly diagnosed with autism and described as a shy, introverted individual by neighbors. The motive for the attack remains unclear, but the charges specify a kitchen knife with a curved blade as the murder weapon. Rudakubana has been remanded to a youth detention center, with a plea and trial preparation hearing set for October 25. Following the attack, false rumors and misinformation about Rudakubana’s identity fueled violent protests. Riots erupted in Southport and spread to London, Hartlepool, and Manchester, resulting in injuries to over 50 officers and extensive property damage. Rioters vandalized a mosque, set vehicles alight, and clashed with police. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the far-right violence and disinformation that incited the unrest. He praised the police for their response and warned social media companies about their role in spreading false information. As Britain reels from these events, the focus remains on justice for the victims and addressing the underlying causes of the unrest. Africa Local News South Sudan Intercommunal clashes leave 20 dead, 38 injured in Alabek Erin Brewer Oct 14, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Renewed intercommunal clashes erupted in the Lou Ariik community of Alabek Payam, Tonj North County in Warrap state, resulting in significant casualties, the state's Information Minister William Wol Mayom revealed to Sudan Post on Sunday. "The conflict erupted within the Lou Ariik community of Alabek Payam and 20 people are reported to have been killed and 38 people are wounded," Mayom disclosed. He noted that efforts were made with local authorities to mitigate the violence. According to Mayom, the violence was sparked by revenge killings within the same community, which has a history of similar conflicts often driven by cattle raids and entrenched disputes. Local authorities have detained three individuals suspected of attempting to transport ammunition into the area, further complicating the security situation. This incident follows closely on the heels of similar violence last month involving the Lou Ariik community, which claimed 21 lives, Mayom noted. "The situation is normal, but tension is still there," he stated, acknowledging the ongoing security challenges in the area. These clashes highlight the continuing security issues in Warrap state and other regions of South Sudan, which have been troubled by conflict largely along ethnic lines since the country's independence from Sudan in 2011. The government faces challenges in maintaining peace, especially in rural zones where traditional conflicts are frequent. Efforts to tackle the underlying causes of such violence—including poverty, inequality, and governance deficiencies—remain hindered by persistent political instability in the nation. Africa | Economy Burundi Discovers "Fabulous" Cassiterite Mine valued at over $50 billion Amid Socio-Economic Crisis Mbeki edmond Jul 22, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link President Ndayishimiye Burundi, currently grappling with a severe socio-economic crisis marked by fuel, sugar, and medicine shortages, has found a beacon of hope in the recent discovery of a cassiterite mine. President Évariste Ndayishimiye visited the Bumeco (Burundi Metal Company) mine in Kirundo province on July 17, where the company's general manager, Gaspard Ngendakumana, revealed a massive find: a cassiterite and coltan mine with an estimated 12.7 million tons of cassiterite, valued at over $50 billion. The discovery, which reportedly dates back to Belgian colonial times, had been concealed post-independence, with the mine sealed and disguised as a nature reserve. President Ndayishimiye expressed outrage at this historical concealment, accusing former colonists of mocking Burundi's poverty. He proclaimed the mine's potential to uplift Burundi from its economic struggles, reaffirming his belief in the country's wealth and potential. 50 billion dollars? Enough to get Burundi out of its problems until the day of "last judgment", enthused Evariste Ndayishimiye the next day, before reminding the skeptics who did not believe him the first time when he said that "Burundi is the true Garden of Eden" of which the Bible speak Despite skepticism from some locals due to the lack of preliminary exploration studies, Ndayishimiye remains confident, reiterating his vision of Burundi as the "true Garden of Eden. Africa | Foreign Relations South Africa Trump threatens South Africa and BRICS nation with 100% tarrifs Ayize claire Dec 1, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link President-elect Donald Trump has issued strong warnings to BRICS nations, demanding they abandon efforts to create a currency that challenges the US dollar. On Truth Social, Trump declared, “The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the dollar while we stand by and watch is OVER,” threatening 100% tariffs on nations that proceed. Trump insists the US dollar must remain the global reserve currency, pledging steep economic penalties for those who deviate. His stance stems from concerns about de-dollarization, a key topic during recent BRICS summits as countries like Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa explore alternatives. The BRICS bloc expanded this year, adding Iran, UAE, Ethiopia, and Egypt, amid rising frustration with dollar dominance, especially following US sanctions on Russia. Critics like Michael Pettis from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace argue Trump’s approach is flawed, noting, “The US cannot both reduce its trade deficit and increase the global dominance of USD.” Despite this, Trump’s economic advisers are exploring aggressive policies, including export controls and accusations of currency manipulation, to prevent de-dollarization. Trump’s tough rhetoric has already impacted global markets, including threats of tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China. JPMorgan predicts China may respond with a significant yuan devaluation, while emerging-market currencies could weaken by 5% in 2025. Though BRICS nations aim to reduce reliance on the dollar, the entrenched global infrastructure supporting USD makes such a shift challenging. Ironically, even at Russia's October summit promoting de-dollarization, attendees were advised to bring US dollars or euros for transactions. For Trump, the fight to uphold the dollar is central to his economic agenda as he prepares for his second term. Africa | Elections Malawi’s Ex-President Peter Mutharika Plans Comeback in Upcoming Election Ayize claire Aug 20, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Peter Mutharika Peter Mutharika , Malawi’s former president, has been selected to lead the main opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in the upcoming presidential election. Mutharika, an 84-year-old who previously governed Malawi for six years, had initially indicated he wouldn’t run for office again. Recently, Mutharika surprised many by expressing a change of heart. He now believes his supporters want him to save the country from the perceived mismanagement of President Lazarus Chakwera . In the 2020 re-run election, Mutharika lost to Chakwera after the Constitutional Court annulled the 2019 election due to widespread tampering, including the use of Tipp-Ex correction fluid on ballot papers. Malawi’s judiciary received praise for rejecting a flawed election process. Within Mutharika’s party, the DPP, internal conflicts led to the expulsion of members who challenged his leadership. Despite this, Mutharika secured the official endorsement as the DPP’s presidential candidate. Mutharika and Chakwera will face off for the third time at the polls. Both leaders have previously won and lost elections. Mutharika aims to regain power, criticizing the current government’s perceived incompetence. Critics argue that the DPP should have chosen a younger, more energetic leader for the upcoming polls. I hope you find this summary helpful! Africa War in DRC Support of the Congolese people by Charles Onana: A Unified Call Mbeki edmond Sep 24, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Holocauste au Congo: L'Omerta de la communauté internationale By Charles Onana The allies of Charles Onana, along with the Congolese National Conscience, are initiating a widespread mobilization of Congolese citizens who have suffered from extermination, assault, and humiliation. They are rallying to support political scientist Charles Onana in his dedicated efforts to advocate for the Democratic Republic of Congo and its affected populations against what he describes as the malign actions of Paul Kagame, the President of Rwanda, along with his Western allies including FIDH, Association Survie France, and the Ligue de Droit de l'Homme France. In his revealing book, "Holocaust in Congo," Charles Onana outlines alleged strategies of destabilization, destruction, and the balkanization of the Congo orchestrated by Paul Kagame and his military groups: AFDL, RCD, CNDP, M23, and AFC. Facing legal challenges from Kagame and his affiliated organizations in French courts on the dates of October 7, 8, 10, and 11, 2024, Onana calls for a united front from all Congolese to stand firmly with him in this crucial time Who is Charles Onana ? Charles Onana, born on February 18, 1964, is a French-Cameroonian political scientist, investigative journalist, essayist, and publisher. He is notably recognized for his controversial analyses and publications concerning the Rwandan Genocide, specifically questioning the accepted narratives surrounding the genocide of the Tutsis. Since 2002, Onana has written several books on the Great Lakes region, focusing on the conflicts and tragedies there, often attributing blame for the genocide and subsequent wars to the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) and Paul Kagame, as well as implicating the U.S. government. He controversially argues that the 1994 genocide was sparked by Kagame, claiming he orchestrated the April 6, 1994 attack that killed Rwandan President Juvénal Habyarimana, which marked the beginning of the genocide. Onana continues to speak at international conferences, often challenging mainstream accounts of the Rwandan Genocide and criticizing the actions of the RPF and international responses to the events of 1994 Related Posts Constant Mutamba announces the execution of the death penalty against the Kulunas convicted of terrorism .
