The council made this request during its 10th Expanded General Purpose Committee (EGPC) meeting, presided over by its President-General, Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, in Abuja. In a statement signed by its Secretary-General, Salisu Shehu, the NSCIA labeled the licence a significant security risk. Earlier in October, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, approved the licence, allowing the church to construct a private airstrip. While Mr. Keyamo assured that the facility would be managed by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), his decision sparked immediate debate. The deal involves transferring 100% ownership of Bidvest Bank Holdings Limited to Access Bank plc, a Nigerian-based financial institution. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals, which is standard for deals of this size and nature. "Bidvest will continue to support Bidvest Bank to ensure that it remains financially sound and operationally stable throughout the disposal process,” the group stated. Access Bank is a global commercial banking institution, serving over 60 million customers through 700 branches across 23 countries on three continents. It has a strong presence in Africa, as well as subsidiaries and offices in the UK, China, UAE, and several other regions. “As a diversified financial institution, it combines a strong retail customer franchise and digital platform with deep corporate banking experience to service various markets through four business segments: retail, business, commercial and corporate,” said Bidvest Bank. Access Bank has strong financial performance, with shareholders’ equity surpassing $1.7 billion as of December 2023. Its customer loans and deposits stood at $6.0 billion and $12.5 billion, respectively. Since entering the South African market in 2021 by acquiring Grobank Limited, the bank has worked towards becoming Africa’s gateway to the world. The R2.8 billion proceeds from the sale will help settle Bidvest’s existing debt. Access Bank also plans to include Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) initiatives, such as an Employee Stock Ownership Plan. Bidvest expects regulatory approvals to take around six months, aiming for a transaction completion before the end of the financial year. In FY24, Bidvest Bank generated a trading profit of R371 million and operating income of R377 million. Its portfolio consists primarily of leased assets, loans, and advances valued at R6 billion, funded by R8 billion in deposits. Other Transactions Bidvest is also selling FinGlobal, its financial emigration services provider, to Momentum Group. The sale will retain all employees and awaits regulatory clearance. Additionally, the group has received binding offers for Bidvest Life from several life insurers, with a final agreement expected soon. “Bidvest Bank, FinGlobal, and Bidvest Life will be disclosed as a Disposal Group held for sale in the consolidated Bidvest financial statements for the financial year, which commenced 1 July 2024,” the group noted. The board now has one less member, with ISPA thanking outgoing members Cheryl Dinkelmann, Gideon le Grange, and André van der Walt for their contributions. “Their tenure as ISPA board members leaves the Internet in South Africa stronger,” ISPA said. Image: SAPS Police in KwaZulu-Natal found two storage buildings holding expired food during an operation in the Bluff area, south of Durban, on Wednesday afternoon. Police spokesperson Col. Robert Netshiunda said they found food items like canned fish, fizzy drinks, soya beans, baby food, and spices stored alongside harmful chemicals such as pesticides. “Counterfeit prescription medication, body lotion, and expired alcoholic drinks were also found in the two warehouses,” said Netshiunda. He also mentioned that police found two more warehouses with fake branded clothing worth millions of rand. “Investigations are under way to find those selling expired food, mostly in township and village spaza shops, as well as the people importing fake clothing,” he added. KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi praised the teams involved in the operation and promised to catch those responsible for these illegal activities. Africa Economy South Africa McKinsey Africa will pay $122M for bribery in South Africa Ayize claire Dec 5, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link McKinsey & Company Africa Ltd, a subsidiary of the global consulting giant McKinsey & Company Africa Ltd, a subsidiary of the global consulting giant, has agreed to pay over $122 million (around R2.34 billion) to settle U.S. charges tied to a South African bribery scheme, the U.S. Justice Department announced on Dec. 5. The firm admitted to paying bribes to officials at Eskom, South Africa’s state-owned energy provider, and Transnet, a freight and logistics company, in exchange for access to confidential information on consulting contracts. This scheme generated an estimated $85 million (approximately R1.63 billion) in profits for McKinsey and its Africa branch. “McKinsey Africa bribed South African officials to secure lucrative consulting work,” said Nicole M. Argentieri, head of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. The company has entered a three-year deferred prosecution agreement, pledging to cooperate with investigators and strengthen its anti-corruption measures. The settlement includes a significant penalty payable in South Africa. Vikas Sagar, a former senior McKinsey partner, earlier pleaded guilty to conspiracy to violate the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. McKinsey stated that Sagar concealed his misconduct from the firm and was terminated when the issues came to light. This bribery scandal highlights inefficiencies at Eskom and Transnet, which have hindered South Africa’s economic growth for over a decade. In addition to this case, McKinsey is in talks to pay over $600 million (about R11.5 billion) to resolve a separate investigation into its role in advising opioid manufacturers accused of fueling the U.S. addiction crisis. The company has also offered some employees nine months’ pay to voluntarily leave as part of internal restructuring.
