Africa | Parties Kenya President Ruto plans a Cabinet reshuffle, likely sacking underperforming CSs Dec 18, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Kenya's President William Ruto President William Ruto is planning a Cabinet reshuffle to improve the delivery of the Kenya Kwanza agenda. Reliable sources indicate that at least two Cabinet Secretaries (CSs) might lose their positions due to underperformance. According to insiders, the President is focused on creating a team that can clearly communicate his administration’s achievements and energize support for his 2027 re-election campaign. During a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday at State House, Ruto posed for an official photo with his ministers. Sources suggest this group photo might serve as a record if the reshuffle happens, which could be anytime soon or early next year. A source close to the matter noted: “The President is very keen to ensure he tames incompetence in his government, and the changes should come very soon. He could start 2025 on a new slate.” This reshuffle follows a pattern, as Ruto also held a meeting and posed for an official photo before sacking CSs in July. The President is reportedly determined to align his team with his goals and strengthen its effectiveness. Africa Health Kenya New HIV Prevention Drug May Reach Poorest Nations by 2025 Bahati shalom Dec 19, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link A groundbreaking HIV prevention drug, lenacapavir, could reach low-income countries by 2025 A groundbreaking long-acting HIV prevention drug, lenacapavir, could become available in the world’s poorest countries by late 2025 or early 2026, according to Hui Yang, head of supply operations at the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria. Yang emphasized that key regulatory approvals, including those from the U.S. FDA and the World Health Organization, must be secured before the injectable drug can be distributed. Lenacapavir, developed by Gilead Sciences, is already used to treat multi-drug-resistant HIV, costing around $42,250 per year in the United States. Recent clinical trials, however, showed its effectiveness in preventing HIV infection, prompting Gilead to seek global approval for this additional use. "We don't want...low and low-middle income countries to wait, to be at the back of the line," Yang said, addressing long-standing inequalities in global HIV treatment access. To ensure early access, the Global Fund, PEPFAR, the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are collaborating to make the drug affordable. The initiative aims to reach two million people within three years. In October, Gilead partnered with six generic drugmakers to produce lenacapavir at lower costs for 120 low- and middle-income countries. However, the move faced criticism for excluding several nations, particularly in Latin America. Efforts to overcome these barriers reflect a renewed push to prevent HIV in vulnerable populations without delay. At just 22 years old, Sakala has already shown great skill and potential, making him a top choice for teams looking to improve their offense. Career Achievements Sakala started his football journey with ZESCO United, one of Zambia's top teams. Under coach Mumamba Numba, he made his debut in the 2020/2021 FAZ Super League season. That year, Sakala contributed seven goals, helping ZESCO United win their ninth league title. In the 2023/2024 season, he netted 12 goals and was the second-highest scorer in the MTN Super League, helping ZESCO qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup. His impressive form caught international attention, and in July 2024, he joined Egypt’s Modern Future FC, signing a deal until June 2028. Why Rayon Sports Wants Sakala Currently leading the Rwanda Premier League, Rayon Sports is looking to stay ahead by signing Sakala. At 1.86 meters tall, his height and goal-scoring skills would add much-needed power to the team’s forward lineup. Africa Culture Kenya faces a femicide crisis with 100 women killed in 4 months Bahati shalom Dec 19, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Protest Against Violence Against Women in Nairobi, January 27, 2024 Kenya is grappling with a rise in femicide cases, sparking calls for urgent action from leaders, civil society, and citizens. According to Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, 100 women have been murdered in just four months, from August to November 2024. Mudavadi revealed during a press briefing on Thursday that investigations into 97 of these cases are complete, while others remain in court. He also shared that 7,107 cases of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) were reported between September 2023 and December 19, 2024. “The elephant in the room in the security sector is the worrying trend of femicide cases which have brought to fore the violations of the rights of women in particular,” he said. Recent incidents highlight the seriousness of the issue. For instance, three family members—Dahabo Daud Said, 38, Amina Abdirashid Dahir, 22, and Nusayba Abdi Mohammed, 13—were brutally murdered. Their bodies were found dumped in separate locations across Nairobi and Machakos, with Dahabo’s hands severed. In another case, 23-year-old Seth Nyakio Njeri was found dead in her friend's house in Thika on October 14. To address the crisis, the government has approved the formation of a presidential working group. This group will involve religious leaders, schools, security agencies, and parents to find solutions by identifying gaps in laws, enforcement, and societal values. President William Ruto has urged security agencies to step up efforts to curb femicide. The Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA) has also condemned the alarming rise in cases. Mark Owuor, FIDA-Kenya’s head of communications, described the trend as a gross violation of women’s rights and evidence of systemic failure to protect women in the country. “This crisis represents a gross violation of women's constitutional rights to life, safety, and security and reflects systemic failures in protecting women across Kenya,” Owuor said. Africa Economy KEMSA Addresses Audit Report on Quality and Efficiency Bahati shalom Dec 19, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link The Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (Kemsa) has responded to an audit report The Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (Kemsa) has responded to an audit report raising concerns about the state of county hospitals. The report, from the County Public Investments and Special Funds Committee, highlighted issues of expired or substandard drugs and frequent stockouts in county health facilities. In a statement released on Thursday, Kemsa refuted claims that the drugs it supplies are of poor quality. The authority emphasized that its operations adhere to strict quality standards. "KEMSA has an ISO17025:2017-certified Quality Control Laboratory and rigorous testing protocols that guarantee the safety and efficacy of all HPTs before distribution," the statement read. CEO Waqo Ejersa explained that Kemsa works closely with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board and World Health Organisation-prequalified laboratories, including MEDs, KEBs, and the National Quality Control Laboratory, to ensure the quality of its medical supplies. In cases where quality issues arise, Kemsa follows the Pharmacy and Poisons Board Recall Guidelines to address them systematically. Kemsa also highlighted its Stock Holding Policy, which requires that only items with at least 75% of their shelf life remaining are accepted in its warehouses. On the issue of stockouts, Kemsa attributed the problem to delayed payments by county governments, which owe the authority Sh3 billion. These financial challenges, Kemsa explained, disrupt its revolving fund model, making it difficult to maintain adequate stock levels. "Ordering patterns and poor budgeting by counties further distort our forecasting data, making it difficult to align supply with demand," Ejersa noted. The authority relies on historical data from county health facilities for forecasting and procurement but faces challenges due to inconsistent orders and payment delays. Kemsa urged counties to streamline their payment schedules and allocate sufficient funds for health procurement to prevent stockouts and improve service delivery. The authority emphasized that addressing these financial and systemic challenges is key to ensuring reliable medical supplies for county hospitals. Africa Health South Africa Nigerian Man and South African Woman Caught Selling R40,000 Worth of Drugs to Undercover Police Ayize claire Dec 19, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link South African policeman in a drug burst Authorities in North West Province have arrested a 48-year-old Nigerian man and a 33-year-old South African woman on charges of drug possession and trafficking. The arrests happened on Wednesday during an operation by the Hawks, North West drug task team, and Lichtenburg K9 unit. Lieutenant Colonel Tinyiko Mathebula, spokesperson for the Hawks, explained that the arrests followed a tip-off about a Nigerian man allegedly selling drugs in Lichtenburg. “An undercover operation was conducted, which led to the arrest of the pair soon after selling drugs valued at R40,000. [Around] 649 mandrax tablets, 40 packets of crystal meth and transparent plastic containing CAT drugs were seized,” said Mathebula. Officers later searched the Nigerian man’s home, where they found more crystal meth worth R15,000 and CAT drugs valued at R6,000. While processing the suspects, a 28-year-old South African woman, identified as the Nigerian man’s girlfriend, tried to bribe the police to secure his release. “She was subsequently arrested and charged with corruption,” Mathebula added. The three suspects are scheduled to appear in the Lichtenburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday. In a separate case earlier this month, IOL reported the arrest of three Mozambican nationals in Johannesburg for drug possession. According to Captain Lloyd Ramovha, spokesperson for the Hawks in Gauteng, law enforcement officials seized a significant quantity of drugs during an operation in the Cleveland area on December 2, 2024. “This was a result of a coordinated effort by the Johannesburg serious organised crime investigation, South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau, and the Trafficking in Persons unit,” said Ramovha. The operation led to the arrest of three Mozambican nationals – Alexandre Alberto Chissano, 62, Raul Silvadore Homo, 51, and Antonio Lisboa, 33 – along with the confiscation of a large amount of illegal drugs. Africa | Appointments Kenya CS John Mbadi pledges loyalty to President Ruto Bahati shalom Dec 17, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link CS John Mbadi(right) pledges loyalty to President Ruto(left) National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has reiterated his loyalty to President William Ruto, acknowledging the trust the President placed in him by appointing him to a crucial role. Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting at the Ndhiwa Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) grounds in Homa Bay County, Mbadi emphasized the significance of the Finance Ministry, describing the President's decision to appoint him as a major vote of confidence. “The President can give you any ministry but not the Ministry of Finance. The kind of confidence and the risk that he (Ruto) took to appoint me makes it very difficult for me to betray him,” Mbadi said. Mbadi said his focus is on achieving results rather than engaging in political debates. “And therefore, mine is not to force people and chest thump that President Ruto should get another term. We are not in that debate as at now,” he added. He underlined his commitment to addressing financial challenges and ensuring things improve before any discussions about political campaigns. “What I want is to work for him (Ruto), to make things that are not working work. Once we have corrected and made things work, we will come and tell Kenyans that we want you to give us another opportunity to continue working,” he explained. Mbadi highlighted several achievements under his leadership, particularly in reducing Kenya's budget deficit and stabilizing the national currency. “When I took over as the CS for Finance, there were challenges in this country. These challenges were better but were not as bad as when the last regime left office when the budget of Kenya to GDP was 8.1 per cent. As we speak, we are reducing it to 4.3 per cent and next year it will be 3.8 per cent and in the next two years the budget deficit must be below 3 per cent,” he noted. He also spoke about the improved stability of the Kenyan shilling, which previously traded at Sh160 against the US dollar but is now at Sh129. Additionally, Mbadi mentioned that government borrowing has decreased by 1.5 per cent since he assumed office, reflecting ongoing efforts to strengthen the economy.
