- Why DR Congo’s World Cup Playoff Could Lift Central Africa
DR Congo’s March 2026 playoff could secure a World Cup spot and elevate Central African football on the global stage. DR Congo’s upcoming intercontinental playoff in March could represent more than a qualification bid it may mark a defining moment for Central African football. After defeating Nigeria in the African playoffs, the Leopards are now one step away from securing a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Following their elimination in the round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, DR Congo redirected its focus to the global stage. The team, coached by Sébastien Desabre and captained by Chancel Mbemba, advanced past Nigeria on penalties (1–1, 4–3) last November, earning a place in the intercontinental playoff. The format leaves DR Congo needing a single victory on March 31 against either New Caledonia or Jamaica to qualify. Before that decisive fixture, the Leopards are scheduled to face Bermuda in a friendly match in Guadalajara, followed by a March 26 encounter linked to the playoff bracket. If successful, DR Congo would join Group K of the 2026 World Cup alongside Portugal, Colombia and Uzbekistan. Entry into that group would not only return the Leopards to the sport’s biggest stage but also increase Central Africa’s visibility in an expanded 48-team tournament. There is also positive squad news ahead of the March window. Midfielder Gaël Kakuta, 34, has signed with Greek club Larissa after departing Sakaryaspor in Turkey. Kakuta, who scored twice and assisted once against Botswana during AFCON 2025 , could offer experience and creative depth if selected. For DR Congo, the March playoff carries sporting and symbolic weight. Qualification would signal competitive resurgence and strengthen Central Africa’s presence within global football structures. Gambian lawmakers have supported recommendations to maintain the country's ban on female genital mutilation (FGM), ahead of a crucial vote later this month on whether to decriminalise the practice. FGM has been outlawed in Gambia since 2015, yet the practice remains prevalent. The first convictions last year for FGM spurred a backlash against the law. Following a heated debate, a report by the joint health and gender committee was adopted by the full house, with 35 lawmakers voting in favour, 17 against, and two abstaining. The final vote on the bill to decriminalise FGM is set for July 24. If approved, Gambia would be the first country to reverse a ban on FGM. The bill passed its second reading in March with only five out of 53 lawmakers opposing it and one abstaining. The joint committee conducted a national public consultation with various stakeholders , including religious and traditional leaders, doctors, victims, civil society groups, and circumcisers. The conclusions presented on Monday condemned all forms of FGM as a "traumatic form of torture" and "discrimination against women." Amadou Camara, the lawmaker who read out the report, stated that repealing the law would be a significant setback for the Gambia. The first conviction for FGM last August involved three women found guilty of cutting eight infant girls, which sparked outrage. This led independent lawmaker Almaneh Gibba to table the repeal bill in March. Gibba and his supporters, including influential religious leaders, argue that the ban infringes on citizens' rights to practice their culture and religion in the Muslim-majority country. However, many Islamic scholars dispute this claim. The World Health Organization (WHO) asserts that FGM has no health benefits and can result in severe complications such as excessive bleeding, shock, psychological issues, and even death. - Ukraine offers e‑governance expertise as DRC pursues digital shift
DRC’s digital minister and Ukraine’s ambassador discussed cooperation on e‑governance, data security and public‑service modernization. On 18 February 2026, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Minister of Digital Economy, Augustin Kibassa Maliba, hosted Ukraine’s ambassador Dr Vasyl Hanyanin at his office in Kinshasa. According to the Congolese ministry’s dispatch, relayed in multiple local outlets, the meeting sought to strengthen bilateral ties and explore cooperation in the digital sector . The ambassador underscored that Ukraine’s experience in digitising government services could help Congo modernise its administration, improve e‑governance and secure citizen data. Both sides framed the talks as a first step toward a pragmatic partnership rather than a formal agreement. What Kyiv is offering. Ukraine’s Ministry of Digital Transformation has built Diia, an integrated mobile app and portal that provides digital passports, business registration and over 150 public services to more than 22 million users . It is the first national platform in the world to issue fully digital passports and is designed to simplify interactions with the state. Ambassador Hanyanin told his Congolese hosts that this know‑how could be adapted to improve Congo’s electronic governance, protect personal data and optimise public services. He also emphasised that Ukraine’s experience with conflict‑driven digital resilience like the rapid deployment of e‑documents for internally displaced people illustrates the value of robust digital systems. The proposed cooperation could extend into sectors such as health, education and foreign affairs, with Ukraine offering technical support and training. Kinshasa’s context and next steps. Congo is currently drafting its National Digital Plan 2026–2030 (PNN2) and an Artificial Intelligence strategy, initiatives unveiled in October 2025 with a budget of around US$1 billion plus external financing. These programmes aim to develop infrastructure, roll out digital public platforms, build human capital and strengthen cyber‑security . The plan builds on earlier efforts such as expanding fibre‑optic networks and launching an online tax portal and sets a goal of making the country a regional digital hub by 2030. In this context, the Ukrainian offer was welcomed as a potential catalyst : Congolese officials highlighted that knowledge sharing and technology transfer could create jobs and revenue for the population. No timeline or memorandum of understanding has been announced, but both sides signalled an intention to turn the conversation into concrete projects in the coming months. - France Rejects Kagame’s Political Justice in Agathe Kanziga Case
France’s dismissal of Agathe Kanziga’s case exposes Kagame’s selective justice and propaganda, not Paris’s empathy for genocidaires. When French judges dismissed the case against Agathe Kanziga Habyarimana, widow of former Rwandan president Juvénal Habyarimana, Kigali’s propaganda machine jumped into overdrive. Headlines screamed: “If she were a Nazi, would France dismiss her case?” The Kagame regime and its supporters want the world to believe France shields “genocidaires.” 📌 Quick Facts: Agathe Habyarimana Case But the truth is far more complex. This case reveals not France’s “empathy” for killers, but Paris’s reluctance to hand over justice to a regime that has turned genocide memory into a political weapon. The Flawed Nazi Analogy Kigali compares Agathe Kanziga to Nazi mastermind Heinrich Himmler. The problem? Nuremberg trials were independent international tribunals, not staged courts run by the victors. In Rwanda, justice is monopolized by Kagame’s Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), the same group implicated in atrocities that remain unpunished. Labeling Kanziga “Himmler” serves one purpose: to distract from Kagame’s own role in April 1994. Multiple investigations, including French and Spanish judges, have pointed to the RPF as responsible for shooting down Habyarimana’s plane, the very act that ignited the massacres. France has, in fact, tried and convicted several Rwandans accused of genocide crimes. But extraditing Agathe Kanziga to Kigali would mean handing her over to a system where trials are political theatre. Kagame’s government routinely fabricates charges and brands critics as “gen ocide deniers” or “ideologues.” This isn’t about shielding suspects. It’s about refusing to be complicit in Kagame’s abuse of “genocide justice” for political ends. The Forgotten Victims While Kigali demands action on Kanziga, it silences any probe into RPF war crimes. The UN Mapping Report (2010) documented mass killings of Hutu refugees in Congo—crimes that may qualify as genocide. Yet no RPF commander has ever faced trial. The UN Mapping Report (2010) documented mass killings of Hutu refugees in Congo—crimes that may qualify as genocide. Yet no RPF commander has ever faced trial. ADVERTISEMENT Why is justice only one-sided? Why are Hutu victims erased from the narrative? If France is guilty of “empathy for genocidaires,” then Kagame is guilty of empathy for his own unpunished generals. By dismissing the case, French judges are not saying Kanziga is innocent. They are saying Rwanda’s evidence is insufficient, inconsistent, or politically tainted. That caution reflects an uncomfortable reality: the Kagame regime’s record of witness intimidation, staged dossiers, and political prosecutions. France may carry historical responsibility for its role in Rwanda, but it refuses to be turned into an extension of Kagame’s propaganda machine. True justice means accountability for all sides. It means survivors of Tutsi massacres and survivors of RPF massacres in Congo both deserve their day in court. It means moving beyond Rwanda’s “official story,” where one group’s pain is weaponized to silence the suffering of another. The dismissal of Agathe Kanziga’s case is not proof of France’s sympathy for genocide suspects. It is a warning: the world sees through selective justice. Kagame’s regime cannot forever monopolize the story of 1994 while burying its own sins in the forests of Congo. Justice for Rwanda must mean justice for all. 📌 Quick Facts: Agathe Habyarimana Case Who is Agathe Habyarimana? Widow of Rwanda’s former president Juvénal Habyarimana, killed on 6 April 1994. Lived in exile in France since 1998. What was the case? Accused of leading the “Akazu,” an alleged inner circle blamed for spreading hate propaganda. Placed under investigation in France in 2007 for conspiracy to commit genocide. Kept status of “assisted witness” since 2016, never charged. The Ruling (Aug 21, 2025): French judges dismissed the case after 17 years. Ruled evidence from Rwanda was “contradictory, unreliable, and politically tainted.” Why not extradited? France refused Kigali’s requests, fearing political trials. Judges cited risks of witness intimidation and one-sided justice in Rwanda. Wider Context: UN Mapping Report (2010) documented RPF massacres of Hutu refugees in Congo — possible crimes against humanity. No RPF commander has faced trial. What it means: Agathe remains free in France at age 82. Raises debate about Rwanda’s selective justice and France’s responsibility. - Burundi Showcases Royal Drum Heritage at UNESCO Paris Event
Burundi’s Vumera Club showcased the country’s royal drum heritage at UNESCO Africa Week 2026 in Paris. Burundi ’s Vumera Club marked a high‑profile appearance at UNESCO Africa Week 2026 , which opened on 19 May in Paris under the theme “Ensuring Sustainable Availability of Water and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Objectives of Agenda 2063”. Vumera Club, led by Jean Barthélemy Barandaje and backed by Burundi’s embassy in France, performed during the opening ceremony, showcasing the ritual dance of the royal drum and other elements of Burundian culture. The club’s participation aligns with a wider programme of exhibitions, conferences and performances at UNESCO headquarters aimed at celebrating African heritage according to burundi-forum . The delegation’s choice of performance highlights the centrality of drumming in Burundi’s identity. Historically the Kingdom of Burundi maintained a dual authority: the sacred drum Karyenda (represented by Mukakaryenda, “wife of the drum”) on one side and the King ( umwami ) on the other, both considered intermediaries with the divine. The ritual dance of the royal drum blends drumming, dancing and song; in ancient Burundi drums were sacred objects reserved for major events, and the practice was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2014. This inscription underscores why Burundi views UNESCO as a fitting venue to present its drum culture. According to organisers quoted in Burundi‑Forum, the invitation resulted from efforts by Ambassador Spès Caritas Njebarikanuye . The appearance was therefore not just a celebration of heritage but also a diplomatic gesture, positioning the Burundian diaspora as cultural ambassadors and reinforcing ties with UNESCO’s Africa Group. Vumera Club says it will continue developing artistic projects and international partnerships to promote Burundian culture. Observers can watch for follow‑up collaborations particularly those linking cultural exchange with Africa Week’s water and sanitation agenda that may emerge as UNESCO and member states pursue the goals of Agenda 2063. - Kano governor meets Tinubu amid APC defection rumours
Kano Gov Abba Yusuf met President Tinubu in Abuja amid reports he may quit NNPP for APC; talks hinge on 2027 ticket and cabinet demands. Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf met President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, amid continued speculation that he is considering leaving the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). According to The PUNCH , Yusuf arrived at the President’s office in the afternoon and left roughly three hours later without speaking to journalists. The report said he is expected to return later in the week to brief the President on the issues raised during the meeting. The visit follows weeks of defection rumours that have repeatedly been delayed since early January. People familiar with the talks had said discussions slowed after Yusuf was said to request a written guarantee of the APC governorship ticket in Kano for the 2027 election, alongside influence over federal appointments linked to Kano and the right to nominate a minister to represent the state in the Federal Executive Council. The same accounts suggested the demands have created friction inside the APC in Kano, including with Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who is widely viewed as a potential contender in the 2027 governorship race. Videos recently shared on Yusuf’s verified Facebook page showed him chairing Kano’s first State Executive Council meeting of 2026 at the state governor’s lodge in Abuja. Meanwhile, Yusuf’s political mentor, former Kano governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has publicly criticised the reported defection plan, describing it as disloyal and warning of political consequences ahead of 2027. Reports have also said some NNPP figures aligned with Kwankwaso including his son, Mustapha Kwankwaso have threatened to resign if Yusuf formally joins the APC. People also read: Hashim warns APC aims to weaken opposition before Nigeria 2027 poll Separately, Kano APC figure and lawmaker Alhassan Ado Doguwa has claimed in a circulating video that President Tinubu directed the party to pause its electronic membership registration exercise in Kano until Yusuf joins and registers first. Earlier this month, Tinubu issued an official birthday message for Yusuf, praising his record in office and pointing to urban renewal projects, bridges and road works, as well as an education “state of emergency” the President said had improved outcomes for Kano students in national examinations.
