DR Congo’s upcoming intercontinental playoff in March could represent more than a qualification bid it may mark a defining moment for Central African football. After defeating Nigeria in the African playoffs, the Leopards are now one step away from securing a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Following their elimination in the round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, DR Congo redirected its focus to the global stage. The team, coached by Sébastien Desabre and captained by Chancel Mbemba, advanced past Nigeria on penalties (1–1, 4–3) last November, earning a place in the intercontinental playoff.

The format leaves DR Congo needing a single victory on March 31 against either New Caledonia or Jamaica to qualify. Before that decisive fixture, the Leopards are scheduled to face Bermuda in a friendly match in Guadalajara, followed by a March 26 encounter linked to the playoff bracket.

If successful, DR Congo would join Group K of the 2026 World Cup alongside Portugal, Colombia and Uzbekistan. Entry into that group would not only return the Leopards to the sport’s biggest stage but also increase Central Africa’s visibility in an expanded 48-team tournament.

There is also positive squad news ahead of the March window. Midfielder Gaël Kakuta, 34, has signed with Greek club Larissa after departing Sakaryaspor in Turkey. Kakuta, who scored twice and assisted once against Botswana during AFCON 2025, could offer experience and creative depth if selected.

For DR Congo, the March playoff carries sporting and symbolic weight. Qualification would signal competitive resurgence and strengthen Central Africa’s presence within global football structures.
