  • Kagame Sides With Journalist Against His Own Foreign Minister

Paul Kagame publicly criticized Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe over his dispute with journalist Scovia Umutesi, saying the minister owed an apology. President Paul Kagame publicly criticized Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe over his dispute with journalist Scovia Umutesi, saying the journalist was not the one who owed an apology. An unusual confrontation inside Rwanda's political establishment unfolded publicly on Monday when President Paul Kagame criticized his own Foreign Minister, Olivier Nduhungirehe, over an earlier dispute with journalist Scovia Umutesi. The exchange occurred during Kagame's wide-ranging August 24 press conference, attended by journalists, international media representatives and social-media personalities. The Update reported on the wider press conference and the issues discussed . Kagame Says His Minister Should Have Apologized The dispute originated from Umutesi's interpretation in Kinyarwanda of remarks Nduhungirehe had made in French concerning the DRC and a meeting at which Congolese officials were reportedly not represented. Nduhungirehe criticized the journalist's interpretation, arguing that his comments had not been accurately conveyed. The disagreement subsequently spilled onto social media and developed into a public exchange. Kigali Today reported on Kagame's criticism of Nduhungirehe over the exchange with Umutesi . When the controversy resurfaced at Monday's press conference, Kagame questioned why the dispute had escalated so far. The president argued that journalists have every right to scrutinize information provided by ministers and determine whether what officials say is accurate. Being a government minister, Kagame indicated, does not make someone the exclusive authority on what is true. Kagame then delivered the remark that quickly attracted attention in Rwanda. Addressing Umutesi, he said that the minister should have been the one apologizing --- not her. Kigali Today reported Kagame as saying in Kinyarwanda that the minister should have apologized for the way he had spoken rather than expecting the journalist to do so. Kigali Today reported Kagame as saying in Kinyarwanda that the minister should have apologized for the way he had spoken rather than expecting the journalist to do so. ADVERTISEMENT An Unusual Public Rebuke The moment was striking because the criticism came directly from Kagame and was directed at Rwanda's sitting Foreign Minister in front of journalists and cameras. Kagame did not suggest that Nduhungirehe should leave office, nor did he announce disciplinary measures against him. Instead, his criticism focused on how the minister handled disagreement with a journalist. Kagame said that if Umutesi had incorrectly represented the minister's remarks, Nduhungirehe could simply have corrected the inaccurate portion rather than allowing the disagreement to develop into a prolonged confrontation. The president's intervention effectively placed him on the journalist's side regarding the question of who should have apologized. • Ugandan LGBTQ activist Steven Kabuye receives treatment at a hospital after he was attacked and stabbed by unknown people, in Kitende on the outskirts of Kampala, Uganda, Jan. 3, 2024 file by VOANEWS Steven Kabuye, a 25-year-old Ugandan LGBTQ activist, was critically injured in a knife attack by unknown assailants on a motorbike. The attack occurred on the outskirts of Kampala, Uganda's capital, as Kabuye was on his way to work. He suffered serious knife wounds and was left for dead before being discovered by local residents. Kabuye had been receiving death threats since March 2023 and had shared this information with police investigators. According to police spokesman Patrick Onyango, Kabuye reported that two individuals on a motorcycle approached him during the attack. One of the attackers targeted Kabuye's neck with a knife, but he managed to block the attack with his arm, resulting in a stab wound to his hand. Despite his attempt to escape, the assailants continued the assault, stabbing him in the stomach before fleeing the scene. Local residents found Kabuye and transported him to a medical clinic. Richard Lusimbo, head of the Uganda Key Populations Consortium, a community action group, indicated that Kabuye was in critical condition, though police later stated he was out of danger. Kabuye, who works with the Colored Voices Media Foundation advocating for LGBTQ youth, had returned to Uganda in December after traveling abroad. This incident has raised concerns among human rights defenders, especially in the wake of Uganda's adoption of one of the world's harshest anti-gay laws last year. This legislation makes "aggravated homosexuality" a potentially capital offense and imposes life imprisonment for consensual same-sex relations. The law has been met with widespread condemnation from rights advocates and Western countries and is currently being challenged in Uganda's constitutional court. President Yoweri Museveni's government has maintained a defiant stance, with officials accusing Western nations of pressuring Africa to accept homosexuality. • WHY UN Recognition of Slavery as a Global Crime Matters

UN recognises slavery as gravest crime, intensifying global reparations debate and historical justice efforts. The United Nations General Assembly’s decision to recognise the enslavement of Africans as the “gravest crime against humanity” is expected to reshape global discussions on reparations and historical accountability, according to a recent BBC report . Adopted with 123 votes in favour, the resolution led by Ghana calls on member states to consider formal apologies and support initiatives linked to reparatory justice. While General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding, they carry significant political and moral influence, often shaping international discourse and policy direction. The move comes amid growing momentum from African and Caribbean states pushing for reparations tied to the transatlantic slave trade, which saw an estimated 12 to 15 million Africans forcibly taken to the Americas between the 16th and 19th centuries . Advocates argue that the long-term effects of slavery continue to drive inequality and underdevelopment across affected regions. Ghana’s President John Mahama framed the vote as a historic step toward acknowledging enduring injustices, emphasising the need to confront both memory and present-day consequences of slavery . His government, alongside the African Union and Caribbean Community, has positioned reparatory justice as a central diplomatic priority in recent years. However, the resolution also highlights deep divisions among global powers. The United States, Israel and Argentina voted against it, while the United Kingdom and several European Union members abstained, citing legal and historical concerns over reparations. Critics argue that assigning modern financial responsibility for historical acts raises complex legal and political questions. Despite these disagreements, the resolution marks a significant shift in international framing moving slavery beyond historical acknowledgment into the realm of contemporary justice debates. It also calls for the return of cultural artefacts taken during colonial rule, further broadening the scope of reparative measures under discussion. As global institutions increasingly engage with questions of historical accountability, the UN vote signals a stronger, more coordinated push from African and diaspora nations to redefine how the legacy of slavery is addressed on the world stage. • Public hospital doctors across Kenya have commenced a nationwide strike, citing the government's failure to honor commitments made in a 2017 collective bargaining agreement. The strike, initiated by the Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU), highlights the demand for adequate medical coverage for doctors and the government's inaction in deploying 1,200 medical interns. Despite a labor court's directive to pause the strike for negotiations, approximately 4,000 doctors are participating, as confirmed by KMPDU Secretary-General Dr. Davji Bhimji. The union's decision mirrors the government's previous disregard for judicial orders concerning doctor's wages and the reinstatement of suspended medical professionals, as stated by Dr. Dennis Miskellah, Deputy Secretary-General of KMPDU. The strike's repercussions are palpable nationwide, with a significant number of patients being denied treatment or turned away from overwhelmed public healthcare facilities. The absence of medical interns, who constitute 27% of the public hospital workforce, exacerbates the healthcare crisis. Disturbingly, the strike's strain on healthcare professionals has led to instances of doctor suicides and fundraisers for sick doctors lacking comprehensive health coverage, according to Dr. Miskellah's statements to Citizen TV. The historical context of this strike traces back to a 100-day doctors' strike in 2017, which called for improved wages, the revitalization of Kenya's deteriorating public health infrastructure, and increased doctor recruitment and training. The striking disparity in remuneration, where doctors, after six years of university education, earn comparably to police officers trained for six months, underscores the longstanding issues within Kenya's healthcare system. The strike's immediate effects are evident, with patients like Pauline Wanjiru, who sought treatment for her son in Kakamega county, being turned away due to the lack of available medical services. This strike not only highlights the urgent need for systemic healthcare reforms in Kenya but also calls for immediate governmental action to fulfill past agreements and ensure the well-being of both healthcare providers and recipients . • Ghana Coaching Plans Await GFA Update After Carlos Queiroz's Departure

Ghana awaits new coaching arrangements after Carlos Queiroz's exit. The Morocco friendly is cancelled ahead of November's AFCON qualifiers. ACCRA, Ghana | 2 October 2026: The Ghana Football Association says it will announce new coaching arrangements for the Black Stars after agreeing to end Carlos Queiroz's contract on 1 October. Its departure statement names neither a caretaker nor a permanent successor, leaving the team's next leadership appointment outstanding. The change comes after two defeats at the start of Ghana's Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. A separate GFA announcement has also removed the Morocco friendly from the team's programme, adding a change of schedule to the coaching transition. Who will coach Ghana after Carlos Queiroz? The GFA has not named a replacement in its departure statement. It says technical arrangements will follow. Ghana's scheduled Morocco friendly has also been cancelled, while Reuters reports that the Black Stars face Somalia twice in November's AFCON qualifiers. No caretaker or permanent successor announced The GFA thanked Queiroz and his technical staff for their contribution, saying further details would cover the team's coaching arrangements and leadership. It did not announce an appointment deadline. Graphic Online's report also states that the association had not indicated whether an interim coach would be appointed or when a permanent replacement would be named. There is a distinction between confirming the head coach's departure and setting out the wider staffing changes. The GFA's message does not identify which assistants will remain, which roles will change or who will take charge of the next training camp. For now, the announced change is the mutual termination of Queiroz's agreement, not the installation of a new technical team. Morocco friendly is no longer on the programme The GFA's cancellation notice says the decision followed consultations between the Ghanaian and Moroccan associations. It apologised to supporters, stakeholders and media partners for the inconvenience. ADVERTISEMENT Morocco friendly is no longer on the programme The GFA's cancellation notice says the decision followed consultations between the Ghanaian and Moroccan associations. It apologised to supporters, stakeholders and media partners for the inconvenience. The original fixture announcement had scheduled the match for Sunday, 4 October, at the Grand Stade de Tanger. That arrangement has now been cancelled. No replacement opponent, new match date or revised camp programme was included in the cancellation notice. Instead, the association said it would communicate new preparations for the AFCON qualifiers. The notice does not attribute the cancellation to Queiroz's departure or give a specific reason beyond consultations between the two federations. Somalia double-header shapes the next assignment Ghana's next competitive task is a pair of qualifiers against Somalia in November, according to Reuters' report carried by CNA . The Black Stars lost their opening matches 2-0 away to Ivory Coast and 4-2 at home to The Gambia. Those results left Ghana without a point from two games, making the next window important for any incoming coach. ADVERTISEMENT The GFA's qualifying calendar places matchdays three and four between 9 and 17 November 2026. The final two rounds are scheduled for 22-30 March 2027. Ghana are seeking one of Group C's two qualifying places after missing the previous tournament in Morocco. The next finals will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. That calendar gives the coaching transition a competitive deadline, although the GFA has not attached a specific appointment date to its departure announcement. Queiroz points to results and working conditions In his own statement published by the GFA , Queiroz confirmed that both sides had agreed to end their relationship. He said "the necessary conditions were not fully established" and acknowledged that recent performances contributed to the decision. He did not identify those conditions or set out specific complaints about funding, staffing or administration. Queiroz thanked the association, his technical staff and the players, while asking supporters to continue backing the squad. "Believe in these players. Protect them. Support them," he said. It did not name a preferred successor or outline who should run the team in his absence. The GFA's April introduction of Queiroz described his initial agreement as a four-month contract covering the World Cup. He succeeded Otto Addo , whose earlier appointment formed part of Ghana's previous coaching cycle. Ghana reached the World Cup's round of 32 before losing to Colombia. The federation subsequently announced a new mandate on 2 September , explaining that his previous assignment had ended after the tournament. That decision, covered in XTRAfrica's report on Queiroz's reappointment , brought him back for the next international window. The new agreement was therefore distinct from the original World Cup assignment. His World Cup squad included captain Jordan Ayew and Antoine Semenyo . Those selections belong to the previous campaign; the next coach's choices for November have yet to be set out in the transition announcements. The remaining decisions are the identity and mandate of the next head coach, the supporting staff and the revised preparation programme. • Panyaza Lesufi Admits Gauteng Failed to Plan for Population Growth

Panyaza Lesufi says Gauteng underestimated population growth and failed to align budgets and infrastructure planning with rising demand for services. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi says the provincial government underestimated population growth and failed to align planning and budgets with migration-driven demand on public services and infrastructure. JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — August 23, 2026 — Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has acknowledged that the provincial government did not adequately plan for the pressure created by rapid population growth, including migration from other South African provinces and immigration from elsewhere on the continent. Speaking during the African National Congress's 2026 local government election manifesto launch in Riverside, Diepsloot, Lesufi said Gauteng had underestimated the scale of demand facing the country's most populous province. According to The Citizen , Lesufi said government had continued building roads, schools, clinics and other infrastructure, but population growth had outpaced the assumptions used for budgeting and planning. He identified two major pressures: people relocating to Gauteng from other South African provinces in search of opportunities, and people arriving from other African countries who also seek to live and work in the province. Lesufi said the mismatch between Gauteng's population growth and government planning had become a major problem that the ANC wants to address through its municipal election programme. Gauteng continues to attract South Africa's largest migrant inflow Official population estimates support Lesufi's broader concern about the scale of migration into Gauteng. Statistics South Africa estimates that Gauteng will receive about 1.42 million migrants between 2021 and 2026, the largest inflow recorded for any South African province during the period. Stats SA's 2026 mid-year population estimates put Gauteng's population at approximately 16.3 million people, representing about 25.7% of South Africa's total population. ADVERTISEMENT The agency has stressed that migration is closely linked to employment, education and access to better economic opportunities, while also increasing demand for housing, transport, healthcare, schools and other public services. Comments come as ANC launches municipal election campaign Lesufi made the remarks as the ANC formally shifts attention toward the 2026 local government elections. The party had already been preparing Riverside in Diepsloot for its manifesto launch, with the ANC confirming the venue and election preparations in an official media advisory issued on August 21. Gauteng is expected to be one of the most closely watched battlegrounds in the municipal elections, with service delivery, infrastructure, unemployment, crime and migration likely to remain major campaign issues. • Nigerian Army Raids IPOB/ESN Hideouts, Recovers IED Materials

Nigerian troops raided suspected IPOB/ESN hideouts in Anambra, recovering guns, motorcycles and alleged IED-making materials, the Army says. The Nigerian Army says troops operating under Joint Task Force South East, Operation UDO KA, raided suspected IPOB/ESN positions in Ogbaru Local Government Area, recovering weapons, motorcycles and materials allegedly used to make improvised explosive devices. ANAMBRA, Nigeria — August 23, 2026 — The Nigerian Army says troops and other security personnel carried out a coordinated raid on suspected strongholds of the Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network, in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State. According to a statement published by the Nigerian Army on X , the operation was conducted on Saturday, August 22, by troops of Joint Task Force South East, Operation UDO KA, alongside the military's Maritime Component, the Department of State Services and the Anambra Vigilante Group. The Army said the joint force launched a dawn operation targeting locations at Obene and Abator villages within the Ochuche and Umunankwo communities. The military said those at the locations opened fire after sighting the advancing troops before abandoning their positions and fleeing into the surrounding area. Troops returned fire and pursued them, according to the Army's account. The Army said blood stains were observed along the withdrawal route, which it said indicated that some of the fleeing suspects had been wounded during the exchange. During the pursuit, troops killed one suspected member of the group, while other fleeing individuals escaped with the body of another person the Army said had also been killed. The casualty claims have not been independently verified. A subsequent search of the locations resulted in the recovery of two pump-action guns, two motorcycles, materials the Army described as being used to manufacture improvised explosive devices, and other items . The details of the operation and the recovered items were also reported by TheCable and P.M. News , both citing the military's account. The Nigerian Army said the seizure of the alleged IED-making materials would reduce the ability of armed groups operating in the area to manufacture explosive devices for attacks against security forces, infrastructure and civilians. • Zimbabwe Cabinet Backs Draft Bill to Extend Presidential Terms

Zimbabwe’s cabinet approved a draft bill to shift presidential elections to MPs and extend terms to seven years, prompting legal and political scrutiny. Zimbabwe ’s cabinet has approved draft legislation that would amend the constitution to lengthen presidential terms from five to seven years and change how the president is elected moving from a direct public vote to selection by members of parliament. The proposal has immediately raised legal questions, with constitutional experts warning that changing term-limit provisions may require a referendum and may not legally benefit a sitting president. Under the proposed changes, presidents would serve a maximum of two seven-year terms, replacing the current two five-year terms. While supporters frame the move as a governance and stability measure, critics view it as part of a broader political push that could keep President Emmerson Mnangagwa whose current term ends in 2028 in office beyond that date . What the draft law proposes According to reporting published Tuesday, the draft bill approved by cabinet would: Extend presidential terms from five years to seven; and Change the election method, with presidents chosen by MPs rather than through a direct national vote. Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi said the government would first hold public consultations before the bill goes to parliament for debate an important step in a process that is likely to become politically charged, given that both chambers of parliament are dominated by the ruling Zanu-PF party. Why legal challenges are likely Legal experts have repeatedly argued that any attempt to alter term-limit effects could trigger constitutional hurdles including a possible need for a referendum particularly if a change is seen as extending or effectively resetting a sitting president’s mandate. Zimbabwe’s constitution introduced term limits under the 2013 framework, adopted by referendum at a time when Robert Mugabe’s hold on power appeared entrenched. A central legal question is not only how the constitution can be amended, but also who can benefit from those amendments. Analysts have pointed to provisions and principles that could prevent changes from applying to an incumbent in a way that extends their time in office. Political backdrop: succession, party pressure, and “2030” slogans Mnangagwa, 83, came to power in 2017 after the military intervention that ended Mugabe’s decades-long rule. He won elections in 2018 and again in 2023, though the 2023 result was disputed by opponents. His current term is scheduled to end in 2028. ADVERTISEMENT Pressure for an extension has also played out inside Zanu-PF. In late 2025, the party publicly signaled support for efforts that could keep Mnangagwa in office until 2030 , with reporting at the time describing internal factional tensions tied to succession politics. The BBC report notes that chants and slogans promoting a “2030” continuation have circulated at party events in recent years, often linked by supporters to Mnangagwa’s “Agenda 2030” development programme though he has previously rejected calls to extend his rule. The death of a prominent internal critic The political landscape has also shifted with the reported death of Blessed Geza, also known as “Bombshell,” a liberation war veteran and former Zanu-PF central committee member who became a vocal critic of efforts to keep Mnangagwa in power beyond 2028. He had been expelled from Zanu-PF and was forced into hiding before later being reported in South Africa, where his family announced his death. What happens next For now, the proposal remains a draft cabinet-backed, but not yet enacted. The next milestones include consultations, formal publication, and parliamentary debate. Given the sensitivity of constitutional amendments and the high stakes involved, the process is expected to draw scrutiny from civil society, opposition parties, and legal experts, and could face court challenges depending on how the bill is structured and advanced. The government has framed the initiative as an effort to strengthen governance and promote political stability. Whether the proposal survives legal tests and whether it ultimately changes Zimbabwe’s electoral model will depend on the details of the bill, the legislative pathway, and potential constitutional requirements for voter approval .
