- Ethiopia Rebases GDP: Economy Now Measured at $210.7 Billion
Ethiopia's rebased GDP puts the 2025/26 economy at 31.86 trillion birr, about $210.7 billion. Here is what changed and what it means for debt and tax ratios. Ethiopia has released new gross domestic product (GDP) figures that put the size of its economy at 31.86 trillion birr, or about $210.7 billion, for the 2025/26 fiscal year. The figures were unveiled in Addis Ababa on Wednesday, November 4, according to the state-run Ethiopian News Agency's (ENA) report on the launch . They come from a rebasing exercise, which updates how the country measures its economy. ENA also shared the headline figure in a post on its official X account . What changed Ethiopia moved its GDP base year to 2024/25 (2017 in the Ethiopian calendar), replacing the old 2015/16 benchmark, according to ENA and a Ministry of National Strategy report detailed by Birr Metrics . Under the new method, GDP for 2024/25 is 24.03 trillion birr, about $201.42 billion. Under the old series it was 15.09 trillion birr. That is an upward revision of about 59%, according to the ministry report. The ministry said the new figures count economic activity that was previously missed or under-recorded, using agricultural and business census data and household surveys. The economy did not suddenly grow Officials have stressed that the jump is a measurement change, not new production. "This does not mean the economy grew overnight," the Ministry of National Strategy said in its report, as quoted by Birr Metrics. Finance Minister Fitsum Assefa said the new figures will support economic planning, fiscal and monetary policy and domestic revenue mobilization, ENA reported. Why it matters A bigger GDP figure changes the ratios that lenders and investors watch. Because debt and tax totals stay the same, debt-to-GDP and tax-to-GDP ratios fall on paper. The government has not yet published its own new ratios. The timing matters. IntelliNews describes Ethiopia as being in debt distress and in an IMF-supported loan programme, and reported that IMF staff are expected to hold talks on the programme's sixth review this month. What happens next National Strategy Minister Bereket Fesehatsion said rebasing will now be repeated every five years, according to ENA's report on his remarks . Officials say the work was done with technical help from the IMF. Whether the IMF and World Bank adopt the new figures in their own estimates remains to be seen. Bring what applies to your route: Police affidavit / case number: gov.za says affidavits are often required when replacing lost or stolen documents such as an ID. Get one at any police station. Form BI-9: completed at Home Affairs if fingerprints were not previously submitted (Western Cape Government guidance). Payment: R140 for the Smart ID re-issue. Banks may add their own convenience fee. Your cellphone number: so Home Affairs can SMS progress updates. Bank Digital Partnership: DHA says you do not need to bring documents for this walk-in bank service — confirm with your branch. Step 1 — Report a lost or stolen ID If the card or green book is missing, go to your nearest South African Police Service station. Ask for an affidavit stating that your ID was lost or stolen, and keep the case number. Official guidance: What is an affidavit? . A government Vuk’uzenzele Smart ID FAQ also says you must provide a police case number and affidavit after losing a Smart ID, and pay the prescribed fee for the new card. Step 2 — Choose where to reissue Option A — Participating bank (Digital Partnership) The Department of Home Affairs partners with selected banks for Smart ID services. Official services currently include Smart ID re-issues for lost, stolen or damaged cards, and green ID book to Smart ID replacements. See dha.gov.za/banks . Your bank may charge a convenience fee. Collect at the same bank branch where you applied. You must apply in person — nobody else can apply for you. First-time IDs, passports, name changes and complex civic services are not available at banks in this phase. Option B — Home Affairs office Use a live-capture office for a Smart ID card. Photos are taken digitally at equipped offices, so you usually do not bring passport photos for the Smart ID itself. Check whether your office uses live capture and which documents it wants that day. Bring your police affidavit and case number if the ID was lost or stolen. Complete Form BI-9 if required. Pay the R140 re-issue fee. Have your photo and fingerprints captured. Collect in person when notified — ask the office about collection rules when you apply. Option C — eHomeAffairs then biometrics Eligible citizens can start a Smart ID application on eHomeAffairs , pay online, then finish biometrics at a Home Affairs office or enabled bank. Full walkthrough: Home Affairs online ID or passport application . Current fees Smart ID / ID re-issue: R140 (DHA banks page; Western Cape Government) Temporary identity certificate (TIC): R70 (gov.za and Western Cape Government) Bank convenience fee: may apply on top of the R140 — ask your bank Errors on a newly issued ID: Home Affairs replaces free of charge (gov.za) Temporary ID while you wait If you need proof of identity before the new card is ready, ask Home Affairs for a Temporary Identification Certificate (TIC). gov.za lists the TIC fee as R70 and says you need your ID number for verification plus two ID photos for that certificate. Fingerprints are verified when the TIC is issued. How to check ID application status Western Cape Government says you can track progress by SMS: text ID followed by your 13-digit ID number to 32551. Each SMS costs R1. ADVERTISEMENT You can also call the Home Affairs Contact Centre on 0800 60 11 90 or email hacc@dha.gov.za. If you applied through a partner bank, DHA says status updates come from that bank’s usual channels. For passport applications instead of IDs, see how to check your South African passport status . Common problems No live-capture office nearby. Only live-capture offices issue Smart ID cards. Call ahead, or use a participating bank branch from the official DHA banks list. Bank branch cannot process my case. DHA says you may be referred to a Home Affairs office for cases banks cannot handle. I only have a green ID book. You can convert a green book to a Smart ID at Home Affairs or at a participating bank under the Digital Partnership. eHomeAffairs login fails. - Poco Lee Biography: Age, Real Name, Dance Career and Songs
Read Poco Lee’s verified biography: age, real name, family status, education, dance career, songs, Headies nominations and UK case update. Poco Lee is a Nigerian dancer, hypeman and entertainer whose street-born movement became part of Afrobeats’ visual language. Born Iweh Pascal Odinaka, he grew from neighbourhood shows in Ojo, Lagos, into a performer seen beside many of Africa’s biggest music stars. His verified X account and official website identify him as a dancer, hypeman and cultural connector. Beyond choreography, he has released collaborative songs and helped connect emerging acts with established artists. In September 2026, his biography also drew renewed attention because of an active criminal case in the United Kingdom. The charges are allegations, he has denied wrongdoing, and he has not been convicted. Who is Poco Lee? Poco Lee is the stage name of Iweh Pascal Odinaka, a Nigerian dancer, hypeman and entertainer born on October 21, 1996. He rose nationally in 2018 after a street-dance video and an appearance in Zlatan’s “Zanku (Leg Work)” video, then expanded into live performance and collaborative music. Breakthrough: From a Street Clip to the Afrobeats Stage Poco Lee’s career changed in 2018, when a video of him dancing at a Lagos event circulated widely. The timing matched the rapid spread of the Zanku and legwork movement associated with Zlatan. According to a detailed Guardian Nigeria profile of his rise , Zlatan contacted him after seeing the clip and brought him into the visual world around “Zanku (Leg Work).” The appearance made Poco Lee easier to recognise beyond Lagos dance circles. Zanku’s bent-knee steps, footwork and theatrical body language travelled through videos, parties and campus performances. Poco Lee helped demonstrate that visual language for new audiences while combining dance, crowd animation and MC work. The years that followed placed him alongside Davido, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Tiwa Savage and other headliners. His official website describes him as a dancer, hypeman and cultural connector a useful summary of how he moves between the street, the club and the concert stage. Early Life, Family and Education Poco Lee was born Iweh Pascal Odinaka on October 21, 1996. He is from Orlu in Imo State but grew up in Ojo, Lagos, in a family of five children. His parents are Kenneth and Augustina Iweh. In a 2022 interview with TheCable , he said his father died when he was about ten, leaving his mother to raise the children through a difficult period. He attended Nigerian Navy Primary School in Okokomaiko and Command Day Secondary School at Ojo Barracks. He later studied Microbiology at Lagos State University. The academic path did not replace dancing; it ran alongside a performance life that had already begun at birthday parties, beach gatherings, end-of-year events and neighbourhood shows. The stage name also comes from school. Poco Lee told Vanguard that a junior-secondary music lesson introduced the Italian expression poco a poco , meaning “little by little.” Because he was the smallest person in the class, classmates shortened it to Poco; he later added Lee. The story is recorded in Vanguard’s account of the name . His style uses quick legwork, exaggerated pauses, low stances and gestures readable on a phone screen. His flexible performance persona adapts to concerts, clubs and viral clips. As a hypeman, he reinforces hooks and keeps energy moving between songs. That role helped him remain useful when individual dance crazes slowed and expanded his visibility at concerts outside Nigeria, including early appearances documented in Dubai, Nairobi and London. ADVERTISEMENT TheCable credited him with helping introduce Portable to Olamide, connecting Black Sherif with Burna Boy and supporting Bella Shmurda’s early visibility. Those connections show how informal networks shape Afrobeats careers without diminishing the artists’ own work. XTRAfrica’s profiles of Burna Boy’s global rise and Black Sherif’s career provide context. Songs, Collaborations and Streaming Record Although dance remains his core identity, Poco Lee has built a singles-led music catalogue. His best-known recording is “YARD,” released in February 2022 with Black Sherif, Bella Shmurda and Alpha P. Apple Music’s release page lists Poco Lee as the lead artist on the collaborative single. Other tracks include “ZaZoo Zehh” with Portable and Olamide, “Otilo (Izz Gone)” with Hotkid, “Unleash” with Kizz Daniel, “Rich Way” with Balloranking and “Hey Jago” with Shoday and Rahman Jago. Most are collaborations built around street-pop momentum and shared audiences. His Apple Music artist catalogue lists “Disconnect,” featuring Mexy Gee, as his latest single in August 2026. It does not list a studio album, so describing him as a singles artist is more accurate than inventing an album discography. His authenticated Spotify artist ID is 63NVCM00HP3vWokNnWQAIc . A third-party Spotify tracker recorded approximately 925,100 monthly listeners on September 11, 2026; the figure is time-sensitive and may change. The archived tracking page is a snapshot, not a lifetime total. The “ZaZoo Zehh” era also produced a public disagreement. Portable accused Poco Lee of mishandling money and credit, then apologised after Olamide intervened. PUNCH’s account of Portable’s breakthrough records both stages. XTRAfrica has since covered Portable’s own claims about supporting emerging artists . Awards and Career Recognition Poco Lee’s strongest recognition comes from the major acts who bring him onstage and the durability of his dance persona. Formal awards have been less central, but his recording work reached new industry acknowledgement in 2026. “Hey Jago” received three nominations at the 18th Headies: Song of the Year, Best Street-Hop Artiste and Best Headies Collaboration. The nominations are listed in the complete 2026 Headies field published by TurnTable Charts . They should be described as nominations, not wins. XTRAfrica’s report on the 2026 Headies nominations places the song within that year’s wider Nigerian awards race. His broader career helped establish the professional dancer as an Afrobeats public figure in his own right. He built a recognisable name and booking identity instead of disappearing behind singers. Nigerian Heritage and Cultural Identity Poco Lee’s identity links southeastern family roots with a Lagos upbringing. Orlu is his stated origin, while Ojo supplied the schools and crowds that shaped his style. His work belongs to a Lagos culture where regional backgrounds mix through Pidgin, music, comedy and dance. ADVERTISEMENT His cultural influence is practical: a move can begin at a party, reach a music video, circulate through short-form clips and appear on an international stage. Dance gives songs a repeatable visual identity, while hypemen turn concerts into participatory events. XTRAfrica’s report on Olamide’s experience of unpredictable stage moments shows the intense live environment in which performers such as Poco Lee operate. Personal Journey, Family Status and Resilience Poco Lee has spoken more openly about poverty and his mother’s sacrifices than about romance. In his TheCable interview, he described the loss of his father and the pressure that followed. He framed dancing as work developed through hardship, not a sudden gift discovered after fame. “I still don’t think I’ve arrived yet but I’ll get there.” That line helps explain why he kept adding music and hosting to dancing. In 2023, he bought a house for his mother. TheCable’s report on the gift connected it to her earlier work selling roasted yam and the hardship he had described. Reliable reporting consulted for this biography does not establish a current spouse, publicly confirmed partner or children. The absence of confirmation should not be filled with names taken from celebrity blogs. The UK Case and His September 2026 Response In 2026, Poco Lee faced five sexual-offence charges in the United Kingdom. The case was listed for a plea and trial preparation hearing at Snaresbrook Crown Court on September 15. He appeared publicly before the hearing and denied wrongdoing. PUNCH’s report citing the Crown Prosecution Service said the prosecution remained active; it did not confirm social-media claims that the case had ended. The charges are allegations, Poco Lee has not been convicted, and his denial is not a court judgment. His custody or bail conditions were not publicly confirmed. XTRAfrica’s latest Poco Lee case update separates his appearance from the prosecution, while its earlier consent-debate report explains the Nigerian reaction. UK law protects the complainant’s identity. Key Events in Poco Lee’s Journey Year Event Significance 1996 Born Iweh Pascal Odinaka Establishes his identity and roots in Orlu, Imo State. 2018 Street-dance clip gains attention Opens the route to Zlatan and national recognition. 2018 Appears in “Zanku (Leg Work)” visuals Links his image to one of Nigeria’s defining street-dance waves. 2021 Joins Portable and Olamide on “ZaZoo Zehh” Extends his role from dancer and connector into credited music. 2022 Releases “YARD” Builds a cross-border collaboration with Black Sherif, Bella Shmurda and Alpha P. 2023 Buys a house for his mother Marks a public family milestone tied to his account of hardship. 2026 “Hey Jago” earns three Headies nominations Brings formal awards recognition to his singles catalogue. 2026 Responds publicly to an active UK case Places his denial alongside a prosecution that remained unresolved. Legacy and Impact on African Dance Poco Lee’s impact lies in turning dance labour into a visible public career. He showed that a dancer could become a recognised collaborator, host and culture broker while helping legwork and related street styles move between local celebrations and global Afrobeats stages. His influence comes from giving songs a kinetic visual language and sustaining a persona audiences recognise quickly. Looking Ahead Creatively, Poco Lee’s 2026 releases and Headies nominations give him room to develop beyond one-off collaborations. His ability to connect artists also remains valuable as Afrobeats expands. Legally, future coverage should report any plea, bail decision, trial timetable or outcome only after official confirmation. Until then, he denies the accusations, the charges remain allegations and no conviction has been recorded. Trending Now US Democrats' Rwanda Record: Peaceful Change and Congo Sovereignty . - Uganda Plans Coordinated Troop Exit From Eastern DRC
Uganda says it is ready to withdraw troops from eastern DRC in coordination with Kinshasa, signalling a possible next phase in Operation Shujaa. Uganda has said it is ready to begin a coordinated withdrawal of its troops from eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, according to a 7sur7 report citing a statement by Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba. He said Kampala was prepared to pull back from positions stretching from Lubero to Mahagi in coordination with the Congolese government. The announcement points to a possible next step in the joint Uganda-DRC military arrangement known as Operation Shujaa, which Ugandan military sources say was launched in November 2021 by the UPDF and FARDC to target the Allied Democratic Forces in eastern Congo. The operation has focused largely on North Kivu and Ituri, where the ADF has remained active despite repeated military offensives. Ugandan troops first entered DR Congo under the renewed joint campaign after cross-border security tensions and a series of attacks blamed on the ADF, a background also reflected in contemporaneous reporting on the launch of the operation by Al Jazeera . While Muhoozi’s statement signals readiness to leave, no timetable or withdrawal mechanism was detailed in the source report, and no matching public confirmation from Kinshasa was visible in the sources reviewed here. - Korede Bello Reflects on Faith, Says Christ Has Risen
Korede Bello speaks on Christian faith, emphasizing Christ’s resurrection and his personal journey from Islam to Christianity, according to a Tribune Online report. According to a T ribune Online report, Nigerian singe r Korede Bello has shared a public reflection on his Christian faith, stating that Jesus Christ should no longer be viewed solely through the lens of the crucifixion but through the resurrection and ascension. In a video posted on Instagram, the musician addressed what he described as an overemphasis on the image of Jesus on the cross, explaining that Christian belief is rooted in the completed sacrifice and the resurrection of Christ. He clarified that his remarks were not intended to diminish the significance of the cross but to highlight what he sees as the core of Christian identity. Bello recounted a personal moment during prayer that reshaped his understanding of faith, saying he realized that Christ is no longer on the cross but is seated beside God the Father. He explained that this perspective influenced how he now views prayer and spiritual identity. Referencing biblical teachings, the singer stressed the importance of the resurrection, citing the Apostle Paul’s assertion that faith is incomplete without belief in Christ’s rising. He argued that Christian worship should focus on the risen Christ rather than repeatedly revisiting the crucifixion. The artist also spoke about his religious background, revealing that he was born into a Muslim family and later embraced Christianity after independently studying the Bible. He said his decision was driven by personal conviction rather than religious pressure. Bello further expressed concern that some believers remain fixated on the symbolism of the cross, suggesting that this focus overlooks what he described as the transformative meaning of Christ’s resurrection. He added that Christian identity should be reflected through love, referencing Jesus’ teaching that love is the defining mark of his followers. He concluded by emphasizing communion as a means of remembering Christ’s sacrifice and victory, noting that it serves as reflection rather than repetition of the crucifixion. - Riderman Says Critics of His Genre Mixing Have Come Around
Rapper Riderman says critics who mocked his genre-blending music now embrace similar styles, reflecting shifts in Rwanda’s rap scene. Rwandan rapper Riderman says artists who once criticized him for blending rap with other music genres have since adopted the same approach. Speaking during an appearance on IGIHE Sports Club, Riderman reflected on criticism he faced more than a decade ago, when Rwanda’s rap scene strongly favored traditional hip-hop. At the time, artists who mixed rap with genres such as Afrobeats and reggae were often dismissed by peers. Riderman said the criticism created pressure but did not influence his artistic direction. He explained that he remained focused on his goals and continued producing music across different styles, confident in his creative vision. He noted that many of the artists who once criticized him are now producing genre-blended music themselves. According to Riderman, this shift highlights how musical trends and attitudes within Rwanda’s music industry have evolved over time. Asked whether the criticism ever made him consider changing his approach, Riderman said it did not. He added that his albums still feature a variety of musical styles and that resistance only motivated him to continue experimenting. Riderman has been active in Rwanda’s music industry for nearly 20 years and is regarded as one of the country’s leading rap artists. He said he plans to hold a concert later this year to celebrate his career milestones. Riderman has been active in Rwanda’s music industry for nearly 20 years and is regarded as one of the country’s leading rap artists.
