Nigerian singer Simi has revealed in a recent interview with CNN that she initially had reservations about dating someone within the music industry. Despite these hesitations, she ended up marrying fellow artist Adekunle Gold, a twist she finds both ironic and humorous. Simi shared that when she first met her future husband, she was unaware of his musical aspirations. "I didn't know he was trying to be a singer because I had actually made the choice to never date someone in the industry," Simi explained, laughing. She described Adekunle Gold as the "king of Photoshop" at his then-job, where he was known for his creative edits rather than his singing talents. "Next thing you know, we're dating and I'm getting comfortable," she added. The couple, who got married in a private ceremony at Ilashe beach in 2019 and welcomed their daughter Adejare in 2020, have found a harmonious balance between their personal lives and their careers. Simi emphasized the importance of respecting each other's crafts and maintaining boundaries. "We're very respectful of each other's crafts and opinions as singers. We also think it's important to create boundaries; work is work and I think we've been able to do very good with that," she remarked. This partnership not only highlights their individual talents but also underscores their ability to collaborate and support each other in a competitive industry. - Pope Leo to end Cameroon visit with Mass in Douala and hospital visit
Huge crowds gathered in Douala as Pope Leo advanced his peace-focused Cameroon visit. Pope Leo drew huge crowds in Douala on Friday as he prepared to lead a major public Mass, a centerpiece of his Cameroon visit during his broader Africa tour as cited by Reuters . Church officials expected hundreds of thousands of worshippers around Japoma Stadium, underlining the scale of the event in Cameroon’s economic capital. The Douala stop followed a day of sharp remarks from the pontiff in Cameroon, where he criticized war spending, condemned corruption and urged leaders to change course in the face of conflict and inequality . His comments added political and moral weight to a visit already being closely watched across the continent. According to the Vatican’s official programme, Pope Leo was also scheduled to visit a Catholic hospital in Douala before returning to Yaounde for later engagements, giving the Cameroon leg of the trip both a public and pastoral focus cited by Vatican News . That structure has reinforced the trip’s message of peace, service and solidarity at a time of regional and global tension. Crowds lining the roads and gathering near the stadium reflected strong public enthusiasm for the visit. In Cameroon, where the Church remains an influential moral voice, the pope’s presence has become both a spiritual moment and a reminder of the country’s wider challenges, including insecurity, inequality and political strain. - DRC Opens Lonshi Border Post to Expand Zambia Trade
DRC opens the Lonshi border post in Haut-Katanga to strengthen migration control, border security and legal trade with Zambia. The new Haut-Katanga facility strengthens migration control, border security and the formal movement of goods between the DRC and Zambia. KINSHASA, August 27, 2026 — The Democratic Republic of the Congo has officially opened a new border post at Lonshi in Haut-Katanga, expanding government infrastructure along one of the country's economically important frontiers with Zambia. Vice-Prime Minister and Interior Minister Jacquemain Shabani Lukoo inaugurated the facility on August 26 in the territory of Sakania, approximately 90 kilometres from the town of Sakania. The opening brings together three government priorities: strengthening national-border security, improving migration controls and creating better conditions for formal cross-border commerce. Radio Okapi reported that the ceremony was attended by Haut-Katanga's acting governor Martin Kazembe, the director-general of the Directorate General of Migration, or DGM, and other administrative and security officials. New infrastructure for an important frontier The Lonshi post contains 17 administrative offices, 22 dormitories for border personnel and a water borehole. These facilities give state agents permanent working and accommodation space in an area where the government wants to improve its control of movements between the DRC and Zambia. According to BETO's detailed account of the inauguration , the facility was built following a request from Sabwe Mining, which sought a more organized route for importing and exporting mining equipment. Authorities expect the post to serve a wider public purpose by facilitating legal commercial movements, strengthening migration controls, improving border security and helping combat cross-border fraud. For Haut-Katanga, where mining, freight transport and regional trade support a large part of the provincial economy, better-organized border services can help reduce informal movements and give public agencies stronger oversight of people and goods crossing the frontier. ADVERTISEMENT Government insists on Congolese law and community obligations The inauguration also carried an accountability message. The DGM called on Sabwe Mining to comply strictly with Congolese laws and regulations and to strengthen its cooperation with local communities and public authorities. The company was specifically reminded to respect its community-development commitments. This positions the new border post not simply as infrastructure serving private mining operations, but as a public facility expected to support state authority and local development. The government has presented the project as part of President Félix Tshisekedi's wider policy of modernizing border infrastructure. A stronger state presence at Lonshi could help secure the frontier while making authorized travel and commerce more orderly. Over time, the post could improve the processing of authorized movements and contribute to more transparent cross-border trade. However, several operational details remain unavailable. Authorities have not publicly announced the construction cost, staffing level, opening hours, processing procedures or projected trade volumes. The opening should therefore be described as an important infrastructure and governance step rather than proof that border delays or commercial bottlenecks have already been eliminated. Its success will depend on staffing, inter-agency coordination, road access and consistent application of Congolese law. For the DRC, the Lonshi facility represents a visible expansion of state services on the Zambia border—and an opportunity to convert regional commerce into stronger security, better administration and broader economic benefits for Congolese communities. - Africa Energy Bank Explained: Funding, Purpose and Projects
Africa Energy Bank explained: who owns it, its $5bn authorised capital, $500m initial funding, planned projects and expected 2027 lending. ABUJA, Nigeria - 3 November 2026. The Africa Energy Bank is now formally established after its founding general meeting in Abuja on 31 October 2026. Its backers, the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and the African Petroleum Producers' Organisation (APPO), appointed Egyptian banker Helmy Ghazi as the institution's first president and constituted its board. But formal establishment is not the same as money reaching an energy project: financing decisions are expected in 2027, and the publicly announced $5 billion capital figure needs careful explanation. What is the Africa Energy Bank? It is a new pan-African development finance institution backed by Afreximbank and APPO, headquartered in Abuja, Nigeria. It is designed to mobilise investment for oil, gas and other energy infrastructure. Its $5 billion figure is authorised capital; lending decisions are expected in 2027. What the Africa Energy Bank is meant to do The bank is intended to address a gap in long-term financing for African energy projects, particularly oil and gas investments that have become harder to fund through some international lenders. It is not a retail bank for personal savings or ordinary household loans. It is a specialised institution intended to work with governments, national energy companies, financial institutions and private investors. In the founders' 31 October statement , APPO and Afreximbank describe it as independent and supranational, with a mandate spanning energy production, transport, processing, refining and distribution. Their stated goal is to build more productive capacity within Africa and expand trade in energy products between African economies. According to APPO's institutional overview , the bank may also support energy-transition activity, technical assistance and projects in African countries that are not APPO members. That is its published mandate, not evidence that a specific clean-energy loan has already been approved. $5 billion capital does not mean $5 billion has been lent Three different figures are circulating around the new institution, and they describe different things. In an October 2026 interview with S&P Global Energy , Ghezali said the bank had secured approximately $500 million in initial capital. He also described plans to raise further money from investors. This initial figure should not be confused with the $5 billion in authorised capital cited at the founding meeting. Figure What it actually represents $5 billion Authorised capital: the headline size of the bank's permitted share-capital structure, not its current cash balance About $500 million Initial capital cited by APPO Secretary-General Farid Ghezali ahead of formal establishment; not a complete audited statement of deployable funds $1.25 billion Reported first subscription tranche that the founders are seeking to mobilise In an October 2026 interview with S&P Global Energy , Ghezali said the bank had secured approximately $500 million in initial capital. He also described plans to raise further money from investors. This initial figure should not be confused with the $5 billion in authorised capital cited at the founding meeting. A 3 November financial report by Africa Business Insight identifies reported commitments by Nigeria and Afreximbank, but also notes that a consolidated public breakdown of all paid-in subscriptions had not been disclosed. The practical question is therefore how much of the announced capital is received, available under the bank's financing rules and subsequently committed to specific projects. ADVERTISEMENT Which energy projects could receive support? The founding mandate covers the entire oil and gas value chain: exploration and production, pipelines and transportation, processing facilities, refineries and product distribution. Regional infrastructure is particularly important because a refinery in one country may serve consumers and industries across several borders. Ghezali told S&P Global Energy that an early focus could be cross-border pipelines and regional refineries, and that he hoped to finance at least three projects during 2027. He identified the proposed Central African Pipeline System as an example of the kind of regional infrastructure under consideration. This is an illustration of the target market, not confirmation of a bank-approved loan for that pipeline. The difference between a project announcement and financing is already visible in other African energy stories. XTRAfrica has reported on planned refinery investment in Lamu, Kenya and on Dangote Refinery's financing plans in Nigeria . Neither project should be described as an Africa Energy Bank beneficiary unless the institution separately announces such a transaction. Beyond hydrocarbons, APPO says the bank's mandate includes the broader energy transition. Ghezali has spoken about potential future activity in electricity and clean cooking. These goals could matter for households and factories, but project priorities and financing eligibility still need to be demonstrated through approved operations rather than broad institutional promises. Why is the headquarters in Abuja? Nigeria was chosen to host the pan-African institution, reflecting its position as an important oil and gas producer and its support for the bank's establishment. The Abuja headquarters provides an administrative base for a lender intended to serve several countries, not only Nigerian companies. The bank's creation took several stages. Afreximbank and APPO started work on a joint financing institution in 2022. Their establishment agreement and charter were signed in Cairo in June 2024 . After several missed launch targets, the founders assembled in Abuja on 31 October 2026 to establish the institution formally, appoint a president and constitute its first board. Reporting by Sika Finance following the founding assembly also identifies Cote d'Ivoire's energy minister, Mamadou Sangafowa-Coulibaly, as chairman of the bank's general assembly for an initial one-year term. Its governance combines producer-country and banking representation. ADVERTISEMENT Who is Helmy Ghazi, the first president? Helmy Ghazi is an Egyptian banking executive named the Africa Energy Bank's inaugural president at the October 2026 meeting. He previously held senior positions at HSBC Bank Egypt. The founders also approved the first board, drawing on public- and private-sector representation and African policy institutions. What could African households and businesses gain? The potential benefits are practical rather than automatic. More reliable fuel supply and regional transport links could help manufacturers, transport operators, farmers and electricity producers. Domestic processing could also allow producer countries to retain more value locally instead of exporting crude and importing finished products. But costs, local content and consumer prices depend on market conditions and project design. Africa's wider energy challenge extends well beyond finance for oil and gas. In its June 2026 global energy-access update , the International Energy Agency and partner organisations estimated that more than 560 million people in sub-Saharan Africa lacked electricity access, with around 970 million lacking clean cooking. These are electricity and household-service challenges; financing a petroleum project does not automatically solve either one. That is why energy development needs several approaches. XTRAfrica's coverage of Uganda's electricity mapping plan examines how better planning could guide future grid investment, while its report on Burundi's electric-vehicle operations explores charging, service and repair capacity. The new lender operates in this broader landscape but has not been confirmed as a funder of those initiatives. New fossil-fuel infrastructure also raises emissions, environmental and financial risks. The bank will need to show how its lending decisions balance domestic energy needs with climate-related costs. When will the Africa Energy Bank start lending? Formal establishment took place on 31 October 2026, but a full loan portfolio has not been demonstrated. Sika Finance reports that operational commencement is scheduled for 4 January 2027 . That date is a reported target; the founding press release did not itself give a first-lending date. The next test is a named borrower, project, financing amount and implementation timetable, backed by transparent capital disclosures. A 3 November analysis in TheCable raises the central accountability question: how will public and shareholder-backed risk translate into clear, measurable public benefits? That question remains relevant whether the first loans support refineries, pipelines, electricity networks or cleaner technologies. It has been formally established and has named a president and board. Full operational commencement has been reported as planned for January 2027; formal establishment should not be confused with an approved first loan. Is the Africa Energy Bank a commercial bank for individuals? No. Its published purpose is to mobilise and finance energy-sector investment, not to provide everyday savings accounts or personal banking services. How much money does the Africa Energy Bank have? Its authorised capital is $5 billion. APPO's secretary-general separately cited around $500 million in initial capital in October 2026. Those are different measures, and a complete public breakdown of paid-in and deployable funds is not supplied in the founding statement. Which country hosts the Africa Energy Bank? Nigeria hosts its headquarters in Abuja, but the mandate is pan-African and includes potential support beyond APPO member countries. Does the Africa Energy Bank fund renewable energy? APPO's mandate includes a broader transition to cleaner energy and potential work beyond hydrocarbons. Early stated priorities focus on oil and gas infrastructure; specific renewable-energy loan approvals have not been identified in the founding announcement. The milestones that will show whether the bank delivers The Africa Energy Bank has moved beyond a proposal: its founders have established it, selected a host city, appointed leadership and set a financing mandate. The next stage is harder. A credible record of paid-in capital, disclosed lending policies, real transactions, project construction and measurable local benefits will determine whether the new institution changes Africa's energy landscape. The next dates to watch are the reported January 2027 operational target and the first project-financing decisions expected later that year. - Burundi Plans Protection of 21 Lake Tanganyika Spawning Areas
Burundi is seeking works to protect 21 Lake Tanganyika fish-spawning areas under its Bujumbura port project. Here is what the tender means. BUJUMBURA, Burundi — 3 November 2026. Burundi has moved to procure protection works for 21 fish-spawning areas along Lake Tanganyika as part of the African Development Bank-supported rehabilitation of Bujumbura port and its access routes. The procurement notice published on 3 November connects environmental safeguards to a regional transport project linking Burundi with Zambia and other countries around the lake. The announcement marks a new procurement step, rather than completion of the 21 sites. It identifies a grant-supported works package but does not, in the accessible notice summary, establish an awarded contractor, a contract value or a completion date for the habitat protection works. What is Burundi planning along Lake Tanganyika? Burundi has advertised works to protect 21 fish-breeding areas at different locations on the lake's shoreline. The works belong to the wider Bujumbura port and Burundi–Zambia corridor programme. The November 2026 announcement concerns procurement; it does not show that the protected areas have been completed. What the new tender actually covers The French-language notice describes travaux de protection de 21 zones de frayère : protection works for 21 spawning grounds. It says the sites are situated at different points along Lake Tanganyika's shoreline. The Government of Burundi intends to use part of financing from the African Development Bank Group for the multinational Burundi–Zambia Lake Tanganyika Transport Corridor Development Project, Phase I, which includes rehabilitation of Bujumbura port. That wording matters. These are fish-spawning sites , not 21 newly constructed ports, commercial fishing facilities or completed nature reserves. A spawning ground is an area in which fish reproduce. Protecting such places can help safeguard the conditions needed for fish populations to replenish, although the ecological effects of this particular contract will have to be measured after implementation. The published procurement summary does not provide a reliable itemised cost, exact site list or confirmed contractor. Interested bidders should consult the original African Development Bank tender document for contractual requirements. The document's filename is dated 27 October, while the AfDB listing and procurement mirrors show publication on 3 November; those are not necessarily the same administrative date. A procurement step is meaningful because it identifies an activity for possible contracting and payment. It is not evidence that a contract has been signed, that physical conservation works have started, or that fish stocks have already recovered. A procurement step is meaningful because it identifies an activity for possible contracting and payment. It is not evidence that a contract has been signed, that physical conservation works have started, or that fish stocks have already recovered. ADVERTISEMENT Why fish-breeding habitats matter to the port project Lake Tanganyika supports communities, trade and fishing around Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania and Zambia . Fisheries depend not only on boats and landing sites but also on the habitats that sustain reproduction. The Lake Tanganyika Authority's October 2026 fisheries meeting brought officials from all four countries together to review fisheries monitoring and cooperation, including efforts to address illegal and unregulated fishing. A port can make the movement of goods more efficient, while lake works, shoreline development and changing water conditions can create environmental pressures that must be managed. The planned spawning-ground contract is therefore an example of a project in which transport investment and fisheries protection are being addressed within the same development programme. Its success should be judged by more than the number of sites named in a tender. Important questions include which habitats are selected, how local fishing communities are involved, whether protection measures are maintained, and whether ecological monitoring shows improvements. The November notice does not itself answer those questions. This work is distinct from the UNEP-led, multi-country Lake Tanganyika biodiversity project announced in February 2025 . That separate initiative, supported by the Global Environment Facility, promotes sustainable fisheries, biodiversity conservation and landscape restoration across the basin. Its published grant value must not be presented as the cost of Burundi's new 21-site works tender. Bujumbura port is a regional trade project, not a new port Bujumbura already has an operating inland port. The current investment is meant to modernise facilities and improve connections across Lake Tanganyika and onwards to road and rail networks. In a May 2026 account of the port's climate-resilience challenges , the United Nations Development Programme described its role in linking Burundi with Tanzania, Zambia and wider East African supply chains. The African Union Development Agency's infrastructure database identifies proposed or ongoing upgrade activities such as dredging, improved vessel access, port handling facilities, and erosion and sediment-management measures. Those are features of the broader port development effort, not specifications of the 21-spawning-ground contract. ADVERTISEMENT For a landlocked economy, reliable lake transport could offer businesses alternative ways to move fuel, building materials, agricultural products and other goods. It could also complement proposals elsewhere around the lake. XTRAfrica has previously reported on DRC–Tanzania plans to strengthen Central Corridor transport and Lake Tanganyika links , including the roles of Kigoma and Kalemie. Burundi is also pursuing other regional connections, such as the Uvinza–Musongati railway project . These are separate investments: completion of one does not guarantee the delivery of another. The benefit of better transport will depend on reliable infrastructure, operating arrangements and affordable services. The challenge of delivering infrastructure beside a rising lake Lake Tanganyika's water levels have already affected development along Burundi's shoreline. UNDP reported that unusually severe flooding in 2023 and 2024 damaged transport systems and other infrastructure, forcing large numbers of people from their homes. Rising water is a practical engineering and social challenge for the port, not merely a distant environmental concern. A March 2026 engineering study presented in Bujumbura recommended improvements to drainage, existing structures and future designs to make the port better able to withstand climate and hydrological pressures. That study informs longer-term planning; it should not be confused with the newly advertised spawning-ground protection contract. The rehabilitation programme has also faced implementation difficulties. During a January 2024 visit to the port , President Évariste Ndayishimiye raised concerns about delays, equipment availability and the construction timetable. That was a historical assessment, not a measurement of the project's progress in November 2026. This history makes procurement and delivery records especially important. Publishing a tender is a concrete administrative step, but it does not by itself demonstrate completed infrastructure or sustained environmental protection. ADVERTISEMENT Who could benefit, and what remains to be proved? The intended beneficiaries of the habitat works include lakeshore fishing communities and the wider fisheries sector, provided the chosen measures work in practice and are developed with those affected. Traders, transport operators and importers may benefit separately from reliable port facilities. These are potential outcomes, not benefits already measured from the November contract. A wider conservation effort is underway around the lake. The United Nations Office for Project Services says the four countries are cooperating on biodiversity and sustainable livelihoods. Successful management will require coordination across borders because fish stocks and ecological pressures are not confined to a single national shoreline. Within Burundi, the environmental component also needs a clear chain of accountability. Readers should be able to identify the contract's eventual price, selected contractor, work locations, implementation period, environmental safeguards and the public agency responsible for acceptance and monitoring. For context, XTRAfrica has also examined Burundi's broader development cooperation with the African Development Bank . But none of that cooperation establishes the contract value or implementation status of the specific 21-site habitat package. What happens next for the 21 spawning areas? The next verifiable steps are publication of the full bidding conditions, identification of an award and contractor, a work programme describing the 21 sites, and evidence that protection measures have been installed and checked. A site-by-site map, community consultation record and monitoring results would make it possible to assess whether the project is protecting breeding habitats as intended. Until those records emerge, the precise description is straightforward: Burundi has advertised protection works for 21 Lake Tanganyika fish-spawning areas as part of its Bujumbura port-linked corridor programme. It is an underreported development combining infrastructure and environmental stewardship, with results still to be demonstrated on the lakeshore. - Man Sentenced Over Theft of Beyoncé’s Unreleased Music
A court in Atlanta sentenced a man for stealing hard drives containing unreleased Beyoncé music from a vehicle. A 41-year-old man has been sentenced to two years in prison after stealing hard drives containing unreleased Beyoncé music from a vehicle in Atlanta , Georgia. The suspect, Kelvin Evans, pleaded guilty to charges including entering an automobile and criminal trespass in connection with the incident, which occurred in July 2025. According to prosecutors, Evans broke into a rented Jeep Wagoneer used by members of Beyoncé’s tour team shortly before the singer’s Cowboy Carter performances in Atlanta. Authorities said the vehicle belonged to Beyoncé ’s choreographer, Christopher Grant, and dancer, Diandre Blue . The pair reportedly returned to find the vehicle’s rear window shattered and several personal belongings missing. Investigators said the stolen items included MacBook laptops, Apple headphones, luxury fashion items and hard drives believed to contain unreleased music by Beyoncé. Court documents also revealed that some of the devices contained sensitive personal information connected to the singer. During the trial process, prosecutors presented surveillance footage allegedly showing Evans parking a red Hyundai next to the rental vehicle before the burglary took place. Additional footage reportedly captured the suspect carrying luggage believed to belong to the victims at an apartment complex. Authorities later tracked the stolen laptops using location technology, which helped investigators identify the suspect’s whereabouts. In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered Evans to serve three years of probation and avoid contact with the victims and the parking facility where the theft occurred. The pair reportedly returned to find the vehicle’s rear window shattered and several personal belongings missing. ADVERTISEMENT Investigators said the stolen items included MacBook laptops, Apple headphones, luxury fashion items and hard drives believed to contain unreleased music by Beyoncé. Court documents also revealed that some of the devices contained sensitive personal information connected to the singer. During the trial process, prosecutors presented surveillance footage allegedly showing Evans parking a red Hyundai next to the rental vehicle before the burglary took place. ADVERTISEMENT Additional footage reportedly captured the suspect carrying luggage believed to belong to the victims at an apartment complex. Authorities later tracked the stolen laptops using location technology, which helped investigators identify the suspect’s whereabouts. In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered Evans to serve three years of probation and avoid contact with the victims and the parking facility where the theft occurred. - Barrick Confirms Tanzania’s 15-Year North Mara Mining Licence Renewal
Barrick confirms Tanzania renewed North Mara’s mining licences for 15 years. What the extension means for investment, workers and the Twiga partnership. DAR ES SALAAM — October 5, 2026 — Barrick Mining Corporation has formally announced that Tanzania renewed the special mining licences for North Mara Gold Mine for another 15 years, extending the regulatory horizon for the operation in the country’s northwest. The company’s announcement distributed through GlobeNewswire was issued at 01:00 Eastern Time on October 5, equivalent to 08:00 East Africa Time. Barrick said the extension supports continued investment in the mine and surrounding communities. What does North Mara’s licence renewal mean? Tanzania has renewed North Mara Gold Mine’s special mining licences for another 15 years, according to Barrick’s October 5 announcement. The extension supports longer-term operational planning under the existing partnership. It does not, by itself, establish a new investment budget, production target or guaranteed increase in jobs. A longer planning horizon, not a new mine North Mara is an established operation rather than a newly approved mining project. Barrick’s mine profile places it in Tarime district in Mara region, around 20 kilometres south of the Kenyan border and 100 kilometres east of Lake Victoria. Commercial production began in 2002. The operation combines underground mining at Gokona with open-pit mining at Nyabirama, and its processing plant has average capacity of 8,000 tonnes of ore a day. That is an ore-processing figure, not a measure of daily gold output. A longer licence term can give an operator more room to plan exploration, equipment purchases and mine development. For workers and suppliers, continuity of an existing operation also matters. Those potential benefits, however, depend on decisions and activity beyond the licence renewal itself. Barrick’s announcement does not specify a new capital commitment, construction programme or additional positions tied to the extension. Nor does it give the licences’ precise commencement and expiry dates. The 15-year term should therefore not be converted into a claimed calendar expiry year without those details. Tanzania’s stake remains part of the Twiga arrangement The renewal sits within the partnership Barrick and Tanzania established through Twiga Minerals in 2019. Twiga operates North Mara and Bulyanhulu together. Tanzania’s stake remains part of the Twiga arrangement The renewal sits within the partnership Barrick and Tanzania established through Twiga Minerals in 2019. Twiga operates North Mara and Bulyanhulu together. As The Citizen reports , the government holds a 16 per cent interest in each mine, while the partners share economic benefits equally. The report describes the renewed licences as allowing North Mara to continue under its existing ownership and partnership structure. ADVERTISEMENT These are distinct arrangements: a 16 per cent ownership interest is not the same thing as a 50 per cent equity stake. The renewal announcement does not describe a transfer of ownership or a replacement of the Twiga framework. Mining Weekly’s report also confirms the 15-year extension and the existing partnership. It attributes the expected long-term investment benefits to Barrick rather than announcing a separately costed expansion. Employment and spending figures cover Tanzania Barrick put the renewal alongside figures describing its wider contribution in Tanzania. It said approximately 96 per cent of its roughly 3,000-strong workforce in the country consists of Tanzanian nationals, with 47 per cent drawn from communities surrounding the mines. Those national workforce figures should not be treated as a North Mara-only headcount. They also describe existing employment, not thousands of newly announced vacancies. The company reported approximately $5.3 billion in contributions to Tanzania’s economy since 2019, including $1.2 billion in 2025 through taxes, royalties, salaries, dividends and local procurement. These are company-reported totals across several categories, not a new government payment or investment pledged with the renewal. ADVERTISEMENT For surrounding communities, the practical questions remain which projects receive funding, when work happens and who benefits. Barrick says community development committees help prioritise schools, clinics and roads; the announcement does not provide a new project-by-project delivery schedule. Formal confirmation follows an earlier public reference October 5 is the date of the formal release, not an established date for the government’s approval. The organiser’s published transcript of Barrick’s September 29 Mining Forum Americas presentation already records a reference to a recent 15-year North Mara licence renewal. That transcript is automatically generated, but the subsequent release confirms the term. The distinction matters: the latest announcement provides a clear company statement about the extension, while leaving the administrative decision date unspecified. The wider economic backdrop includes Tanzania’s mining and trade cooperation with the DRC , proposed Central Corridor improvements and the Uvinza–Musongati railway project with Burundi . These are separate regional initiatives, not projects approved or financed by North Mara’s licence renewal.
