- Who Is Dada Morero, Johannesburg’s Viral Mayor?
Who is Dada Morero? Read about Johannesburg’s mayor, his viral Tshepisong clash, apology, political career, education and family. Sello Enoch Dada Morero is the executive mayor of Johannesburg and the ANC’s regional chairperson in the city. He returned to the mayor’s office in August 2024. His name surged on Google after a video showed him using profane language during a tense Tshepisong meeting, followed by an unconditional apology. Dada Morero became a fast-rising South African search on 30 August 2026 after video of his clash with a resident spread beyond the original meeting. Renewed attention prompted questions about his full name, political history, education and public role. Why Dada Morero is trending Morero attended a service-delivery meeting in Tshepisong on Thursday, 27 August, with municipal officials and City Power. Residents were dealing with persistent electricity interruptions. During the meeting, a resident repeatedly accused the mayor of being a criminal. Video showed Morero rejecting the accusation before responding with profane language. The footage moved from public social platforms into national coverage. eNCA reported that Morero later apologised through the City of Johannesburg’s official X account. He accepted responsibility and said the exchange should have been handled differently. The Citizen’s account placed the confrontation in its electricity context. City Power said only 202 of Tshepisong’s 11,958 registered prepaid customers were actively buying electricity. Officials cited bypassed meters, illegal connections, vandalism and non-payment. The viral clip should not erase that background, but the service-delivery dispute does not excuse the mayor’s language. The publishable position is that the confrontation occurred, Morero apologised, and the electricity problems remain a live issue. Claims about criminality made during the exchange were accusations, not proven findings. Public Google Trends data for South Africa showed “Dada Morero” as an active exact-name trend on Sunday afternoon, up 1,000% from its normal baseline. That public signal supports renewed biography demand; it does not reveal private analytics. From Orlando West to city government The City of Johannesburg’s official biography identifies the mayor as Sello Enoch Dada Morero. He was born and raised in Orlando West Extension, Soweto, and became involved in student activism during the final years of apartheid. That public signal supports renewed biography demand; it does not reveal private analytics. ADVERTISEMENT From Orlando West to city government The City of Johannesburg’s official biography identifies the mayor as Sello Enoch Dada Morero. He was born and raised in Orlando West Extension, Soweto, and became involved in student activism during the final years of apartheid. Morero’s early professional career included work at the South African Secret Service and the Department of Home Affairs. The City says he joined Johannesburg’s municipal administration in 2004, first working in the office of then-finance MMC Parks Tau. He later became director of customer centres and marketing. The municipal biography lists postgraduate and master’s-level study in public management and policy development through Wits Business School, Regenesys and the University of London. Morero left the City administration after becoming ANC regional secretary in Johannesburg in 2011. He held that party post for three terms, making him Gauteng’s longest-serving regional secretary, according to the City. He was elected ANC regional chairperson in 2022. Why Morero has served as mayor twice Morero first occupied the Johannesburg mayor’s office in 2022, but the term lasted only 25 days. A Gauteng High Court ruling invalidated the council process that had removed Mpho Phalatse. Daily Maverick reported that Morero stepped down after the court reinstated Phalatse. He returned to the office on 16 August 2024. In that council vote, Daily Maverick recorded 189 votes for Morero and 60 for the opposing candidate. The City’s current biography confirms that he has served as executive mayor since that election. His return came amid unstable coalition politics and sustained pressure over water, electricity, roads, revenue collection and municipal finances. Those problems also shape the coming local-election debate. XTRAfrica’s explainer on the ANC NEC Lekgotla examines the party’s focus on municipal delivery, while its report on Gauteng’s population pressures provides wider context for demand on services. ADVERTISEMENT Morero’s governing priorities The City says Morero’s administration is focused on financial resilience, improved revenue collection, energy reliability, inclusive urban development and economic growth. His earlier finance portfolio also placed him close to Johannesburg’s revenue and infrastructure challenges. The Tshepisong incident also became a test of political temperament, combining anger over unreliable electricity, accusations against officials and expectations that leaders remain measured under pressure. The apology is an important part of the record, but it does not settle the underlying service problem. Progress will be judged through electricity restoration, infrastructure protection, lawful payment systems and communication with residents. The question is not simply whether Morero apologised; it is whether the City delivers after the confrontation. XTRAfrica’s coverage of municipal innovation in South Africa outlines the broader national push for more effective local services. Personal and family status Official municipal material provides limited, non-intrusive family information. It identifies Morero as married to Kgomotso and as a father of five. The children’s names are not necessary to explain his public role and are withheld here for privacy. - Kabila Is Helping Rwanda Disguise Its Aggression, Says Muyaya
Patrick Muyaya accuses Joseph Kabila of helping disguise Rwanda's alleged aggression in eastern DRC through the new FRN coalition linked to AFC/M23 DR Congo government spokesperson Patrick Muyaya accuses former President Joseph Kabila of choosing armed rebellion over democratic politics, arguing that the new FRN coalition is a rebranded continuation of AFC/M23 rather than a genuine break from the conflict in eastern Congo. KINSHASA, — October 18, 2026 — Democratic Republic of Congo government spokesperson Patrick Muyaya has sharply criticized former President Joseph Kabila’s leadership of a new political-military coalition, accusing him of aligning himself with what Kinshasa considers a Rwandan-backed rebellion and seeking political power through force. In remarks delivered in French , Muyaya said Kabila’s decision to publicly lead the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN) amounted to an attack on Congo’s constitutional order and on the right of Congolese citizens to choose their leaders through elections. The government spokesperson portrayed the new coalition as a change of name rather than a change in purpose. He also said Kinshasa would continue pursuing peace through the Washington and Doha processes while maintaining its military readiness. Muyaya Accuses Kabila of Choosing Arms Over Elections Muyaya argued that a former head of state should not seek a return to political influence by joining a movement that includes armed groups fighting the Congolese government. He said the decision to take up arms carried consequences for civilians already affected by violence, displacement and insecurity in eastern DRC. In his account, any attempt to capture territory by force risked producing more deaths and humanitarian suffering. “The choice to take up arms means that Congolese people will be killed in an attempt to conquer territory,” Muyaya said, according to an English translation of his French remarks. He insisted that political authority must come from the Congolese electorate, not armed action. He also challenged political figures who had called for Kabila’s participation in national dialogue to explain whether they still supported that position following his association with the new coalition. These are accusations and political judgments made by Muyaya; they do not, by themselves, establish Kabila’s individual responsibility for specific attacks or civilian deaths. ADVERTISEMENT These are accusations and political judgments made by Muyaya; they do not, by themselves, establish Kabila’s individual responsibility for specific attacks or civilian deaths. FRN Replaces AFC as Kabila Takes the Lead The FRN was announced in Goma on October 12, 2026, bringing Kabila into the leadership of a political-military structure linked to the former Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC) and M23 rebellion. Reporting by Radio Okapi and Africanews identified Corneille Nangaa and Bertrand Bisimwa among the figures retaining senior roles in the new organization. Muyaya said this continuity was central to the government’s position. He argued that the people involved, the movement’s armed character and its methods had not fundamentally changed, despite the adoption of a new name and the elevation of a former president. He further alleged that Kabila had been involved in the AFC project before publicly assuming a leadership role. That assertion was made by Muyaya and was not independently established by the remarks themselves. The FRN has presented itself as a movement opposed to President Félix Tshisekedi’s government. Its representatives have accused the authorities in Kinshasa of misrule and have defended resistance to the current administration, including the possibility of force. Kabila has previously rejected accusations linking him to wrongdoing and described legal proceedings against him as politically motivated. Rwanda Accusations and the Question of Accountability Muyaya went further, describing the new alliance as a proxy armed movement serving Rwanda’s interests. He accused Kabila of helping make what Kinshasa regards as Rwandan involvement in the Congolese conflict appear to be a purely domestic political confrontation. He also alleged that the reorganization could reduce international pressure on President Paul Kagame by shifting attention toward Congolese political rivalries. ADVERTISEMENT Rwanda has repeatedly denied supporting M23, while United Nations experts and other international actors have documented or alleged Rwandan military support for the movement. The distinction matters: evidence concerning Rwanda’s support for M23 does not automatically prove every allegation Muyaya made about Kabila’s intentions or personal responsibility. Muyaya referred to deaths in Goma, sexual violence, the displacement of families and the interruption of children’s schooling as reasons to reject further armed escalation. He invoked a figure of 10,000 deaths in Goma, but the supplied remarks did not identify a source, period or methodology for that number; it is therefore presented here as his claim rather than an independently verified toll. Washington and Doha Remain Central to Kinshasa’s Approach Despite his criticism of Kabila, Muyaya said the government remained committed to existing diplomatic initiatives. He cited United Nations Security Council Resolution 2773, the Washington process involving Rwanda and the Doha negotiations addressing the AFC/M23 conflict as frameworks for resolving the security crisis. In his description, the Washington track addresses the interstate dimension of the conflict, while the Doha talks address armed actors and commitments related to a ceasefire and broader settlement. Muyaya said the emergence of the FRN did not change Kinshasa’s intention to pursue these channels. The new coalition has said it will assume the previous AFC structure’s commitments under the Doha process, a position reported by Al Jazeera . Whether that undertaking translates into progress toward a durable ceasefire remains uncertain. Muyaya also said Congo’s armed forces must remain on alert and prepared to respond when necessary. He characterized military readiness as normal for a country facing an ongoing armed conflict, even while diplomatic talks continue. ADVERTISEMENT National Dialogue and Political Parties Under Scrutiny The spokesperson drew a line between peaceful political opposition and groups seeking power through armed force. He said those advocating for Kabila’s inclusion in political dialogue, including figures associated with the C64, should clarify their position now that the former president has taken a leading role in the FRN. Muyaya also defended the interior minister’s authority to suspend political parties whose leaders, in the government’s view, had abandoned democratic competition in favor of armed action. His remarks linked this argument to Kabila’s political camp and the People's Party for Reconstruction and Democracy (PPRD). Such measures raise separate legal and political questions, including the rights of party members who do not support armed activity. The spokesperson’s remarks set out the government’s justification, not an independent legal determination about every affected party or individual. Muyaya maintained that a national dialogue should bring together Congolese committed to peace, constitutional institutions and national cohesion. He referred to discussions involving religious organizations and said the country needed stronger security institutions capable of protecting both civilians and territorial integrity. A New Name, but an Unresolved Conflict The confrontation places a former Congolese president at the head of a coalition that includes figures from a rebellion already central to the war in eastern DRC. For Muyaya, the FRN announcement is evidence of continuity rather than transformation. He argues that Kabila’s leadership does not change the government’s assessment of the armed movement or remove the need for accountability over abuses committed during the conflict. The documentary "Dahomey," directed by Franco-Senegalese filmmaker Mati Diop, has been awarded the prestigious Golden Bear for Best Film at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival. The film explores the complex narrative surrounding the return of looted African antiquities to their countries of origin, specifically focusing on the restitution of 26 treasures from France to Benin. These artifacts were originally taken during the colonial era from the West African kingdom of Dahomey , now part of Benin, by French forces in 1892. "Dahomey" is distinguished not only by its critical exploration of colonial legacy but also by its director's previous accolades, with Diop's film "Atlantics" having won a Grand Prix at Cannes in 2019. Diop's work is noted for addressing the colonial past and its enduring impacts, aiming to engage audiences with these often-overlooked narratives. The documentary's win at the Berlinale highlights the growing interest and recognition of films that delve into colonial history and its contemporary ramifications. The festival was marked by a politically charged atmosphere, with numerous winners and jury members expressing solidarity with global issues, particularly the situation in Gaza. Kenyan Mexican Oscar laureate Lupita Nyong'o led the International Jury, marking a historic moment as the first black individual to preside over the jury at this prestigious event. She was accompanied by esteemed personalities including Ann Hui, Christian Petzold, Albert Serra, Jasmine Trinca, and Oksana Zabuzhko. The ceremony also featured acknowledgments of other significant works, including a documentary on Israeli-Palestinian relations and films exploring diverse global narratives, underscoring the Berlinale's reputation as a platform for cinematic excellence and cultural discourse. This achievement not only celebrates Diop's contribution to cinema but also shines a light on the broader conversation about art restitution and the need for historical reckoning with colonialism's legacy. - DRC Digitizes 10 Teacher Training Modules With UNESCO
DRC says 10 teacher training modules have been digitized with UNESCO support under the EFFICACE program. The Democratic Republic of Congo has digitized 10 teaching modules for in-service teachers and school principals, according to a report published by Actualite.cd on Thursday. The initiative was led by the Ministry of National Education and New Citizenship with support from UNESCO as part of efforts to modernize training tools and widen access to professional development. Officials said the digitized modules cover core areas including reading and writing, mathematics, educational leadership and inclusive teaching practices. The workshop presenting the results followed a nine-day technical mission held from April 12 to 20, 2026 in Mbanza-Ngungu, Kongo Central province. Speaking on behalf of the ministry’s secretary-general, Christelle Nsambu said the project is expected to expand training coverage, improve teaching practices and strengthen school management structures. UNESCO’s representative in the DRC, Isaias Barrett Da Rosa, said the initiative reflects a broader effort to build an education system that can adapt and evolve by placing teachers and school leaders at the center of change. The digitization drive fits into a wider reform push in the Congolese education sector. Earlier this month, the ministry signed a memorandum on strengthening the digitalization of the education system , while UNESCO has also linked its support in the DRC to stronger teacher training and school leadership under the EFFICACE program backed by the Global Partnership for Education . - Prosecutors Seek Next Legal Steps After Mutamba’s Absence
DRC’s FRIVAO trial moves forward after Constant Mutamba missed a new summons. Former Justice Minister Constant Mutamba failed to appear before the Kinshasa/Gombe Court of Appeal on Tuesday after a new summons in the FRIVAO trial , a case examining alleged embezzlement of funds meant to compensate victims of Uganda’s illegal activities in the Democratic Republic of Congo . According to prosecutors, Mutamba allegedly refused to comply with the summons and made threatening remarks to the officer and clerk sent to notify him. The prosecution argued that his reported condition did not appear consistent with the medical report previously used to justify his absence. The court is now moving to the next phase of proceedings. Prosecutors requested time to prepare submissions on the unanswered summons, while judges continued the substantive investigation by hearing witnesses from Rawbank, the bank through which some disputed transactions allegedly passed. Mutamba’s testimony has been viewed as important because FRIVAO’s interim director previously told the court that some payments were made on instructions from the former justice minister, including verbal directives. Earlier reporting by ACP also said the case had already been postponed after Mutamba’s absence at a previous hearing. FRIVAO was created to manage compensation linked to Uganda’s illegal activities in Congo. The wider reparations process follows a 2022 International Court of Justice ruling ordering Uganda to pay the DRC compensation for damage caused during past armed activities on Congolese territory. Prosecutors allege that more than $50 million may have been misused in the FRIVAO case. Several people have already been questioned, and the court’s next decisions could determine how Mutamba’s continued absence affects the direction of the trial. President Ruto defends his leadership against critics and unveils new support for dairy farmers in Meru. Gachagua responds with sharp criticism. MERU, KENYA – June 22, 2025, XTRAfrica News President William Ruto has said he will not be distracted or shaken by political attacks, even as opposition voices grow louder, including from his former deputy, Rigathi Gachagua. Speaking at the 10th Annual Meru Dairy Farmers Field Day, Ruto said he remains focused on delivering key promises to Kenyans, especially in agriculture, education, healthcare, and job creation. “I’ve been in politics for too long to be scared by noise. I won’t waste time with street drama. Let them chant all they want, I’m doing the job Kenyans gave me,” Ruto said. A Subtle Message to Gachagua Even as Ruto spoke in Meru, his former deputy Rigathi Gachagua was just a few kilometers away in Maua, criticizing the Kenya Kwanza administration for failing to fulfill its promises. While Ruto didn’t mention him directly, he praised his current deputy, Kithure Kindiki, saying he finally has a deputy who “understands his job.” “This time I have a real assistant. Not someone obsessed with empty politics,” Ruto added in a subtle jab. Prof. Kindiki also responded with a bold message of his own: “Kenya needs leaders with real solutions. Not noise-makers or self-serving opportunists. - Macron Says French Language’s “Epicenter” Is Now in the Congo Basin
Macron says “epicenter” of the French language is now in the Congo Basin, reflecting Africa’s rising demographic and cultural influence in the Francophone world. French President Emmanuel Macron has sparked debate across the Francophone world after declaring that the “epicenter of the French language” is now located in the Congo Basin rather than along the banks of the Seine in Paris. Speaking in Alexandria during an event dedicated to the Francophonie and the inauguration of the new campus of Senghor University, Macron stated: “The epicenter of the French language today is found in the Congo River Basin, not on the banks of the Seine, because that is where the largest number of French speakers are.” The remarks quickly drew online reactions, with many questioning whether the French president’s statement was factually accurate. According to figures cited by Le Figaro from the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF), France remains the single country with the largest number of French speakers, with approximately 66 million francophones representing 96% of its population. The Democratic Republic of the Congo ranks second, with around 57 million French speakers, accounting for roughly 51% of its population. However, Macron referred specifically to the “Congo Basin,” a broader regional space that includes six countries: Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon. Combined, these countries represent around 77 million French speakers, surpassing France itself. The figures reflect a deeper demographic transformation taking place within the Francophone world. According to the OIF, nearly 65% of the world’s 396 million French speakers now live in Africa, a trend expected to accelerate significantly in the coming decades. The organization estimates that the global Francophone population could exceed 500 million adults by 2050, driven overwhelmingly by African population growth. Macron’s remarks are increasingly being interpreted not simply as a linguistic observation, but as recognition of Africa’s growing cultural and geopolitical weight within the Francophone sphere. - WHY Macron Defends Europe in Africa at Nairobi Summit
Macron defended Europe’s Africa role at a Nairobi summit focused on finance, security and influence French President Emmanuel Macron defended Europe’s role in Africa during the Africa Forward summit in Nairobi , arguing that Europe remains a reliable partner as China, Russia and other powers expand their influence across the continent . The summit, co-hosted by Kenya and France on May 11–12, focused on innovation, growth, energy transition, peace and international finance reform. France’s presidency described the meeting as part of a renewed Africa-France partnership framework. Macron’s message matters because France is trying to reposition itself after years of strained relations in parts of West Africa. AP reported that the Nairobi summit reflects France’s push toward a “partnership of equals,” including stronger ties with English-speaking African countries. Macron also criticized China’s role in Africa’s minerals sector, accusing Beijing of creating economic dependencies by processing African raw materials at home. He contrasted that approach with Europe’s support for multilateralism, open trade and rule-based cooperation. The shift comes after France withdrew troops from Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger following military coups and rising anti-French sentiment. Macron defended France’s former Sahel military presence, saying French forces had been invited to fight jihadist threats and left when their presence was no longer wanted. Kenya’s role as host also underlined Nairobi’s growing diplomatic profile. For France, holding the summit in Kenya signaled an effort to move beyond traditional Francophone ties and rebuild influence through broader economic, cultural and political engagement. - Mali Army Deploys Reinforcements to Repel Gunmen After Attacks
Mali’s army deploys reinforcements to repel gunmen following coordinated attacks in Bamako and the north. Details on the military's strategic response. The Malian military has launched an emergency security operation to repel gunmen who staged a series of coordinated strikes across the capital and northern regions early Saturday. To secure the perimeter, soldiers have established roadblocks around the Kati military base and strategic corridors leading into Bamako, as the government seeks to regain control of the security narrative as cited by reuters. Following the initial explosions, the army's next move involves a multi-front response to reports of gunmen active in Sevare, Kidal, and Gao. While the Azawad Liberation Front claims to have seized positions in the north, military officials have called for public calm while tactical units are deployed to neutralize the remaining "terrorist" elements. Security forces are also prioritizing the stabilization of the military camp near Bamako’s airport, which houses Russian security elements. This defensive surge arrives as Mali and the U.S. reportedly move closer to a deal that would allow for increased aerial intelligence, a move intended to provide better early-warning systems against future coordinated assaults. - Mask of Betrayal Falls”: Paluku Exposes Kabila’s ‘Sudanization’ Claim
Paluku responds to Kabila’s Goma interview, warning against narratives that threaten Congo’s unity and sovereignty Mask of Betrayal Falls”: Paluku Exposes Kabila’s ‘Sudanization’ Claim as a Tool of National Destabilization Kinshasa — March 23, 2026, Following Joseph Kabila’s i nterview with Belgium’s La Libre from Goma, Minister Julien Paluku responded by questioning both the timing and the message behind the former president’s remarks. The interview, published on March 23, coincides with a date closely associated with the M23 rebellion, which first emerged in 2009. For Paluku, that detail is difficult to ignore. An Interview from Goma Kabila chose to speak from Goma, a city currently under the control of M23. In his response, Paluku points out that the former president’s presence there, combined with his statements, raises concerns about the broader context of the interview. He argues that Kabila’s remarks reflect more than personal opinion, especially given the ongoing security situation in eastern Congo. Three Key Takeaways Paluku structures his reaction around three main points: Rupture: He suggests that Kabila’s statements reveal a break with the past, showing what he describes as the end of a political system that had long operated behind the scenes. Sovereignty: On the issue of “Sudanization,” Paluku rejects the idea that Congo is heading toward fragmentation. Instead, he calls for unity and support behind President Félix Tshisekedi. Vigilance: He also calls on people in North Kivu, South Kivu, and across the country to remain alert to what he describes as ongoing attempts to destabilize the nation. On ‘Sudanization’ Kabila warned that Congo risks becoming like Sudan, a country that split after years of conflict. ADVERTISEMENT Paluku dismisses that comparison.
