- Patrick Muyaya Defends Congo’s Press Freedom, Blames M23 Influence
Patrick Muyaya says DRC’s press freedom progress under Tshisekedi remains strong, blaming M23 and Rwanda for media repression in conflict-hit eastern Congo. KINSHASA — November 28, 2025 In a detailed response to recent commentary on the Reporters Without Borders (RSF)rankings, Minister of Communication and Government Spokesperson Patrick Muyaya reaffirmed that the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) remains one of Africa’s fastest-improving countries in media freedom, despite persistent challenges linked to insecurity in the east. Speaking after receiving an award from Journalistes en Danger (JED) in recognition of the government’s efforts to promote press freedom, Muyaya stressed that critics misread the RSF report , which primarily highlights the deteriorating situation in eastern DRC, a region under constant threat from the Rwanda-backed M23 rebellion. “If there is a decline in ranking, it’s not due to Kinshasa. It’s because of M23, who export the same repressive methods that exist in Rwanda, no freedom, no space for journalists,” Muyaya said. He underlined that President Félix Tshisekedi has shown unprecedented engagement with the media sector since 2019, citing key milestones such as the General Assembly of the Press, on media modernization and journalist protection, and regular briefings with local and international journalists. “Never before 2019 had we seen a President so attentive to journalists, so open to dialogue, and so supportive of reforms,” he added. Muyaya also addressed the temporary suspension of Al Jazeera, clarifying that it followed a violation of accreditation procedures: “They gave the floor to an individual posing as a journalist, neither recognized by Al Jazeera nor accredited by our press office. The sanction was proportional and time-bound.” The Minister emphasized that the government’s collaboration with media organizations remains solid and transparent, evidenced by constructive engagements with JED, the press union, and international partners. “Let’s recognize progress where it exists and confront challenges where they persist. What matters is that Congo continues to move forward.” The DRC, which has made consistent gains in transparency and access to information, continues to position itself as a regional model of media pluralism and democratic resilience, even as armed propaganda and misinformation remain key challenges in conflict-affected territories. - Francis Duru Biography: Ahanna, Nollywood Career, Wife and Family
Francis Duru’s biography covers Ahanna in Rattlesnake, theatre training, Mboputa, wife Adokiye and carefully attributed October 2026 reports. Francis Duru is a Nigerian actor best known for playing Ahanna in Amaka Igwe’s Rattlesnake . His career connects theatre, the early home-video industry, language-based filmmaking and the training of younger performers. On 23 October 2026 , TVC reported a family announcement of his death . The report described a brief illness without identifying a medical diagnosis. Duru’s public record extends beyond that developing news. He is a University of Port Harcourt theatre graduate, an award-winning screen performer and a teacher whose interviews place considerable importance on craft, family and faith. Who is Francis Duru? Francis Duru is a Nigerian actor associated with Ahanna in Rattlesnake . Born in Cameroon to Nigerian parents, he trained in theatre and built a career across film, stage and mentoring. His work includes Blood Money , Stigma and the award-winning performance in Mboputa . The actor behind Ahanna For many viewers, Duru’s name is inseparable from Ahanna. His performance in Rattlesnake supplied the role through which a much wider audience came to recognise him. The film remains central to institutional accounts of his career, including the Nigerian Copyright Commission’s birthday profile . The commission’s selected credits also include Blood Money , Nnenda , Home in Exile , Stigma , The Good Husband and Mboputa . Duru’s trajectory belongs alongside the varied careers of Nollywood veterans such as Nkem Owoh . Their individual routes differ, but each illustrates how a memorable screen identity can become the public shorthand for a much broader working life. Cameroon, Imo roots and theatre training Duru’s Penn State Global Virtual Forum biography identifies him as Cameroon-born, of Nigerian parentage, and from Okai, Eziama, in Isiala Mbano, Imo State. Birthplace and nationality are distinct: the university profile explicitly describes him as Nigerian. His birth date is 27 July 1969 , according to the Copyright Commission. That makes him 57 as of 23 October 2026 . That makes him 57 as of 23 October 2026 . The University of Port Harcourt supplied his theatre foundation. Penn State also records a master’s degree in development communication from Nasarawa State University. This combination helps explain the range of his professional activities: acting was accompanied by teaching, consulting and an interest in using performance to communicate with communities. ADVERTISEMENT His background also places him in the theatre-to-screen tradition visible in Ngozi Nwosu’s career , where stage practice and popular entertainment overlap. A career built around learning In a January 2025 interview with PUNCH , Duru described his first movie as The Missing Mask , filmed around 1992–1993. His recollection differs from institutional summaries that list Missing Mark in 1989. His own account nevertheless makes the importance of formal training clear: he described entering the production with theatre experience already behind him. He also resisted treating fame as the highest measure of achievement: “I am proud to be called an actor.” For Duru, watching other performers was part of continuing education. He also described work as a master of ceremonies, consultant, voice artist and masterclass teacher. The public image of a familiar film actor therefore represents only part of his professional activity. Duru won Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) for Mboputa at the 2020 Best of Nollywood Awards , as recorded in the contemporary winners’ list published by P.M. News . The precise category is important. It recognises a particular performance within Igbo-language cinema, rather than an unspecified overall best-actor title. It also demonstrates that his professional record continued well beyond the film most closely attached to his name. ADVERTISEMENT Adokiye, fatherhood and faith Duru’s wife is publicly identified as Adokiye . PUNCH’s 2022 anniversary report records their marriage in 2003. In his 2025 interview, he described meeting her while they were at the University of Port Harcourt and building their relationship through friendship. His discussion of bereavement was closely connected to his Christian faith. He spoke about the family learning to live with loss, rather than describing grief as something quickly overcome. The account offers personal context without requiring the identities or private lives of his other children. What the October reports establish PUNCH’s 23 October report also attributes the death announcement to his family. Business Post additionally reports statements by Actors Guild of Nigeria president Abubakar Yakubu and BON founder Seun Oloketuyi. The reports describe a brief illness but do not identify a medical diagnosis. That description does not establish a specific cause of death or connect the announcement to earlier health rumours. Francis Duru’s career timeline Year Event Significance 1969 Born on 27 July Birth date recorded by the Copyright Commission 1990s Played Ahanna in Rattlesnake Established his best-known screen identity 2003 Married Adokiye Marriage later marked in public anniversary coverage 2020 Won the BON leading-actor award in Igbo for Mboputa Recognised a later-career performance 2025 Featured in Penn State’s Global Virtual Forum Documented his wider work in theatre and communication Francis Duru FAQs What is Francis Duru famous for? Monrovia, In a landmark event at Monrovia City Hall, the World Bank launched the Liberia Country Development and Climate Report, a critical document that examines Liberia’s development in the face of climate change. This initiative underscores the nation's vulnerabilities and opportunities, proposing robust strategies for sustainable growth and climate resilience. The report, resulting from a collaboration between the World Bank and Liberian stakeholders, offers a comprehensive analysis of Liberia's socio-economic landscape. It emphasizes the country's acute susceptibility to climate adversities, such as sea-level rise and extreme weather, given its extensive coastline and agricultural reliance. Key sectors including infrastructure, healthcare, and education have seen progress, yet challenges like poverty and environmental degradation persist. The document suggests integrating climate considerations into development plans to bolster long-term sustainability. World Bank Country Manager for Liberia, Georgia Wallen, and Country Director for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, Robert Taliercio O'Brien, stressed the critical need for combined efforts to tackle development and climate challenges. They highlighted the human toll of poverty, especially on women and children, and called for action to fortify infrastructure and empower women. Liberia's government, represented by Tanneh Geraldine Brunson, Deputy Minister for Budget and Development Planning, voiced its commitment to incorporating the report’s insights into national policies, emphasizing climate resilience and sustainable development. The event, coinciding with the World Bank's Action Week, facilitated discussions on climate risk, sustainable infrastructure, and the importance of community involvement in driving forward Liberia's development agenda. The Liberia Country Development and Climate Report, part of a wider effort that includes Lebanon and Zimbabwe, is available on the World Bank's official Facebook page, offering insights into navigating developmental challenges towards a resilient future . - Kiitan Bukola Says Looking Good Doesn’t Make Her Wayward
Kiitan Bukola opens up on faith, fashion and her new film God Fearing Baddie, challenging stereotypes about women’s appearance. Kiitan Bukola is not interested in being placed inside a box. The Nollywood actress, filmmaker and content creator is pushing back against the idea that a woman who dresses well, looks glamorous or carries herself with confidence must be morally loose. For her, beauty and faith are not enemies. According to Saturday Sun, Kiitan Bukola, whose full name is Oloruntimilehin Bosede Bukola, opened up about the message behind her latest film, God Fearing Baddie , a project built around the danger of judging people by how they look. The actress said many people often misunderstand her because of her appearance. While some may see her outside and assume she is just a “baddie,” she said her private life is deeply rooted in prayer, fasting and her personal relationship with God. Bukola explained that she prays often and sometimes fasts alone without being pushed by anyone. For her, true spirituality is not about how someone dresses, but about sincerity, a pure heart and a real connection with God. That message sits at the heart of God Fearing Baddie. The film explores how people, especially women, can be wrongly judged because of fashion, confidence or beauty. Bukola says the story is one many families will understand because almost every home has someone who feels misunderstood. Known for moving comfortably between Yoruba and English-language productions, Kiitan Bukola has built a career around versatility. But beyond talent and screen presence, she credits prayer as one of the biggest forces behind her growth in Nollywood. She said prayer has played a major role in her career journey and believes God has been faithful to her through the ups and downs of the entertainment industry. Bukola also challenged the popular belief that a fashionable woman cannot be God-fearing. In her view, being a “baddie” simply means taking pride in one’s appearance and expressing individuality. It does not automatically point to bad behaviour or poor values. Her point is simple: a woman can love God, dress beautifully and still live by strong principles. - MUST Pharmacy Accreditation Explained: What Students Need to Know
MUST’s pharmacy course remains academically accredited, according to NCHE’s reported position. Here is what the PSU dispute means for students. KAMPALA, 21 October 2026 — Mbarara University of Science and Technology’s Bachelor of Pharmacy programme remains academically accredited, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa told Parliament on 20 October after consulting the National Council for Higher Education. His assurance follows the Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda’s withdrawal of professional recognition, leaving students facing two different institutional positions. Nile Post’s parliamentary report says Tayebwa requested an Education Ministry statement on 22 October, with Attorney General guidance on the legal framework. That clarification matters because academic study and progression into professional practice are different questions. Is MUST’s pharmacy programme accredited? NCHE’s reported position is that the Bachelor of Pharmacy programme remains academically accredited. PSU has separately withdrawn professional recognition over staffing and leadership concerns. Students should obtain written guidance on their particular cohort’s examinations, internships and registration rather than assume either that all degrees are invalid or that every professional requirement is settled. Three questions that should not be combined First , there is the university’s institutional status. NCHE’s licensed-institutions register lists Mbarara University of Science and Technology as a public university. A dispute about one programme is not evidence that the entire institution has ceased to be recognised. Second, there is academic accreditation of the particular course. Tayebwa said he had contacted NCHE Executive Director Professor Mary Okwakol and received confirmation that the pharmacy programme remained accredited. Third , there is professional recognition and the pathway towards practising pharmacy. PSU’s description of its training responsibilities includes supervising pharmacy students’ engagement, training and transfer, and providing for student registration. Its general webpage is background on those responsibilities, not proof that the current dispute has ended. Why PSU withdrew recognition According to Nile Post’s report on PSU’s 19 October notice , the society cited inadequate staffing and concerns about the pharmacy department’s leadership. It said an acting head was not a pharmacist and that a substantive appointment had not been advertised. PSU said it had issued a show-cause notice on 10 September, allowing 30 days for a response, and that MUST had not responded within that period. These are the society’s stated grounds, rather than a finding that every student’s work is invalid. The reported restrictions concern student numbers, recognition of internship placements and eligibility for new graduates’ qualifying examinations. PSU also said it would not recognise qualifications obtained from teaching or assessment during de-recognition. Those consequences require specific clarification for affected cohorts; a general reassurance about academic accreditation does not answer every professional-progression question. ADVERTISEMENT MUST has appointed a pharmacist to lead the department in an acting capacity. Reporting on the university’s 20 October letter to NCHE identifies Dr Jonans Tusiimire as the appointee, effective 19 October for three months. The university explained that an earlier departure had left a leadership gap. It defended the previous interim arrangement by pointing to the lecturer’s teaching and research expertise, and said teaching activities had continued during the transition. MUST also reported receiving clearance on 14 October to recruit or promote academic staff, with plans to address staffing gaps. These are remedial steps. An appointment or recruitment plan should not be described as PSU reinstatement without a separate decision from the society. What remains unresolved for students Daily Monitor’s 20 October report quoted Okwakol’s position that withdrawal of recognition of academic qualifications falls within NCHE’s mandate. It also reported PSU Secretary Dr Stephen Lutoti saying the society maintained its council resolution, while it had not yet received formal communication about the new departmental appointment. It cannot be settled simply by treating the words “accreditation” and “recognition” as interchangeable. For students and parents, the useful questions are specific: Does the restriction affect my admission year or current stage of training? Will my student number, attachment or internship be recognised? What written arrangements apply to upcoming qualifying examinations? Has PSU issued a new decision following MUST’s response? If a transfer is considered, how would credits, fees and completion time be handled? Keep written answers from the university and the relevant bodies. Before making a costly transfer or assuming professional eligibility, ask for guidance that identifies the programme, cohort and decision date. The next scheduled clarification is the government statement requested for Parliament on 22 October.
