  • DRC urged to rethink ADF response as attacks reach Tshopo

UN figures on ADF killings and displacement in eastern DRC are intensifying calls to reassess the response as violence reaches Tshopo. Fresh pressure is building on the DRC government to reassess its response to the Allied Democratic Forces after Actualite.cd initially reported that the armed group has extended its operations into Tshopo province, citing a UN human rights update. The new warning adds to concern that ADF violence is no longer confined to its long-hit strongholds in Ituri and North Kivu. Speaking in Geneva on March 25, UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights Nada Al-Nashif said the ADF had expanded operations across Ituri, North Kivu and Tshopo since October, killing more than 260 people, displacing thousands, and subjecting women and girls to sexual slavery, resulting in dozens of pregnancies, according to the OHCHR statement . The reported spread has sharpened fears in Tshopo, particularly in Bafwasende, where local actors have already been warning about spillover from attacks in neighboring Mambasa in Ituri. Those fears deepened after more than 7,000 displaced people were reported arriving in Bafwasende following recent violence. The latest UN figures are likely to intensify scrutiny of ongoing military efforts against the ADF, including joint operations involving Congolese and Ugandan forces, as communities continue to face killings, displacement and growing insecurity across eastern DRC. Wizkid reacts to Burna Boy and DJ Tunez clash as Nigerian DJs consider sanctions after Lagos altercation. Nigerian music star Wizkid has reacted to the recent altercation involving Burna Boy and DJ Tunez, adding to the growing controversy within the entertainment industry. The incident reportedly took place at Obi’s House in Lagos, where a confrontation between Burna Boy and DJ Tunez, popularly known as Ogbafia, escalated from a verbal exchange into a physical clash. Following the development, Wizkid took to his official X (formerly Twitter) account to comment on the situation. In his post, he appeared to criticise Burna Boy, making indirect remarks that many observers linked to the clash. Earlier, Burna Boy had shared a video of himself dancing to his song Money Constant , altering the lyrics in a manner widely interpreted as mocking DJ Tunez after the incident. In response, the Nigerian DJ Association announced a temporary ban on Burna Boy’s songs, stating that the action would remain pending the outcome of an investigation into the altercation. The situation has since drawn attention across the music industry, with fans and stakeholders monitoring potential implications for the artists involved. It later moved the window forward to 14–23 August 2026 to prevent it from overlapping with the national application cycle for the 2027 academic year. NSFAS has instructed colleges not to use the September dates on websites, posters or notices. Applicants should therefore treat 23 August 2026 as the official closing date unless NSFAS publishes another formal update. Who can apply for NSFAS Trimester 3 funding? The special window is intended for students seeking funding for the 2026 Trimester 3 intake at a public TVET college . An applicant must satisfy NSFAS’s citizenship, financial, institutional and academic requirements. The main requirements are: You must be a South African citizen or permanent resident. You must intend to study, or be eligible to register, at a public TVET college. Your programme must be approved for NSFAS funding. Your combined annual household income must normally be R350,000 or less . If you have a disability, the combined annual household-income limit is R600,000 or less . You must meet any applicable academic progression requirements. You must provide complete and accurate information and any documents requested through myNSFAS. Admission to a college and approval for NSFAS funding are separate decisions. A college decides whether you qualify for admission; NSFAS decides whether you qualify for financial aid. Which TVET programmes may qualify? The 2026 NSFAS eligibility rules recognise these broad categories of approved public-TVET qualifications: Pre-Vocational Learning Programmes, subject to NSFAS limits; NATED or Report 191 programmes; National Certificate (Vocational), or NC(V), programmes; and occupational programmes approved for funding by the Department of Higher Education and Training. The Trimester 3 calendar does not apply to every course. Confirm with your chosen public TVET college that your programme has a Trimester 3 intake and is eligible for NSFAS funding before applying. Financial requirements Applicants who do not receive a qualifying SASSA grant NSFAS generally regards an applicant as financially eligible for a bursary when the combined gross annual household income is: ADVERTISEMENT R350,000 or less for most applicants; or R600,000 or less for an applicant with a disability. NSFAS may verify income and family information against third-party records, including government and credit-information sources. Declared information must therefore be complete and accurate. SASSA grant recipients A qualifying SASSA recipient who is validated by NSFAS automatically satisfies the financial eligibility test. The 2026 policy specifically lists the Foster Care, Care Dependency and Child Support grants. This does not mean funding is automatic in every respect. The applicant must still complete the application process, register for an approved programme and satisfy the applicable academic and institutional conditions. The Social Relief of Distress grant is not included in the policy definition used for this automatic financial test. Academic requirements for continuing TVET students First-time applicants must meet the entry requirements for their chosen programme. Different rules apply to students who are progressing through an existing qualification. Under NSFAS’s 2026 policy: a non-first-time-entering TVET student must generally pass at least 70% of the modules or courses taken in the relevant year to remain eligible for the following academic year; an NC(V) student progressing to the next level must have passed at least five subjects at the previous level; a Report 191 student progressing to the next N-level must have passed at least three subjects at the previous level; and progression requirements for occupational programmes are determined by the TVET college and shared with NSFAS. Continuing students who were funded in the immediately preceding academic term generally do not reapply annually, provided they remain eligible. Returning students who were not funded in the immediately preceding term, students who changed institution type, and students resuming after deregistering or dropping out may need to reapply. If you are unsure whether this Trimester 3 window applies to you, check your myNSFAS account and ask your college’s financial-aid office before the deadline. Documents needed for the application NSFAS says applicants should have their ID number, proof of household income and college choice ready before starting. The exact upload list is generated according to the information entered in the application. Depending on your circumstances, you may be asked for: your South African ID number or valid proof of permanent residence; ID details for your parent, guardian or spouse, where applicable; proof of household income, where NSFAS cannot verify it electronically; a completed and signed 2026 NSFAS Consent Form ; a completed NSFAS Declaration Form if it applies to you; a completed Disability Annexure and supporting medical report if you have a disability; an Orphan or Vulnerable Child Declaration Form, where applicable; a death certificate for a deceased parent or guardian; a divorce decree, marriage certificate or proof of legal guardianship, where relevant; or a retrenchment letter or other evidence explaining a recent change in household income. Use the forms linked on the official NSFAS application information page . Do not download application forms from unofficial websites. How to apply for NSFAS Trimester 3 in 2026 Step 1: Open the official myNSFAS portal Go directly to https://my.nsfas.org.za/ . Check that the address ends in nsfas.org.za before entering personal information. Step 2: Create or access your myNSFAS profile New users should create a profile with their correct ID and contact details. If you already have an account, sign in instead of creating a duplicate profile. ADVERTISEMENT Step 3: Select the correct application cycle Choose the 2026 TVET Trimester 3 application option. Do not confuse it with the 2027 national application cycle or a university application. Step 4: Complete every required field Enter your personal, household, income and study information exactly as it appears on official records. Select the correct public TVET college and programme where the portal requests this information. Step 5: Upload the requested documents Upload clear, readable copies of every document shown on your checklist. Make sure all required forms are signed by the correct people before uploading them. Step 6: Review the application Check your ID number, contact information, household details, college selection and uploaded files. Incorrect or missing information can delay assessment. Step 7: Submit and save proof Submit the application before the deadline. Save the confirmation message, reference number or screenshot for your records. How to check your application status After applying: Visit the myNSFAS portal . Sign in with your registered email address and password. Complete any required security check. Open Track Application Progress or Application Status . Read the status and complete any action requested by NSFAS. Monitor both your myNSFAS account and registered email address. If NSFAS asks for a supporting document, upload it through the official portal within the period stated in the request. What NSFAS funding may cover For an eligible bursary recipient, NSFAS funding may cover approved costs such as: registration; tuition fees; learning materials; accommodation or transport, subject to the applicable rules; a living allowance; and a personal-care allowance. The amount and type of allowance depend on the student’s registration, study mode, living arrangements and the rules applying to the programme. Occupational-programme students may be subject to different funding limits; in some cases, funding is restricted to tuition. Common application mistakes to avoid Using the old deadline: The 3–14 September dates were withdrawn. Applying in the wrong cycle: Select 2026 TVET Trimester 3, not the 2027 national cycle. Creating duplicate accounts: Use your existing myNSFAS profile if you already have one. Entering mismatched ID details: Your names and ID number should match official records. Uploading unreadable documents: Make sure every page is clear and complete. Leaving forms unsigned: Check all signature fields before uploading. Choosing a private college: NSFAS bursaries do not fund studies at private institutions. Waiting until the final day: Technical problems do not guarantee an extension. Sharing your password: NSFAS says its officials will never ask for your myNSFAS password. What if you miss the 23 August deadline? NSFAS has not promised a late-application period for the 2026 Trimester 3 cycle. If you miss the deadline, monitor the official NSFAS website and verified NSFAS channels for a formal extension, and contact your college’s financial-aid office for guidance. Do not trust social-media posts claiming the deadline has changed unless the information also appears on an official NSFAS platform.
