- Hadza Hunting Tools, Honey and Material Culture
Explore Hadza hunting tools, honey collecting and material culture through academic research on life around Lake Eyasi. The Hadza , also known as the Hadzabe, are Indigenous hunter-gatherers of northern Tanzania, especially around Lake Eyasi. Their daily life is often described through hunting and gathering, but that simple phrase hides a deeper story. Hadza material culture is not about having many objects. It is about having the right objects: bows, arrows, axes, knives, digging sticks, hides, carrying cloths and the knowledge to use them well. This is a culture of movement, skill and attention. A bow is not only a weapon. An axe is not only a tool. Honey is not only a sweet food. Together, they show how the Hadza read the land, feed families, share food and teach children what survival means. Hunting With Bows and Arrows Among the Hadza, hunting is closely linked to men’s work, though Hadza life should never be reduced to one rigid rule. In the detailed study “ Hadza Hunting, Butchering, and Bone Transport ”, James O’Connell, Kristen Hawkes and Nicholas Blurton Jones explain that Hadza hunters used bows and arrows for a wide range of animals. Hadzabe bows Their description is direct: “All these animals are hunted with the bow and arrow” (O’Connell, Hawkes & Blurton Jones, 1988, p. 117). Hadza arrow head Traditional Hadza iron arrowheads/ Photo credit: British Museum Collection For large game, arrows are usually poisoned. For smaller animals, poison may not be used. This matters because it shows that Hadza hunting is not one simple technique. Hunters choose tools according to the animal, the season and the situation. The same study also notes that “Firearms, snares, and traps are very seldom used” (O’Connell, Hawkes & Blurton Jones, 1988, p. 117). That makes the bow and arrow central to understanding Hadza hunting technology. ADVERTISEMENT Two Ways of Hunting Hadza hunting is not always a dramatic chase. O’Connell and his co-authors write that “Hadza hunting takes two forms” (1988, p. 117): intercept hunting and encounter hunting. Intercept hunting often happens in the dry season, when animals gather near water. Hunters may wait near water sources or game trails. Encounter hunting is more flexible. It can happen while a man is walking, looking for honey, moving between camps or guarding others who are collecting food. The hadzabe poisoned arrows Ready to use handmade hadza arrows This is one of the most important things to understand: Hadza hunting is often woven into daily movement. A man may leave camp with a plan, but the land may offer something else. Honey Is Not a Small Detail Honey is sometimes treated like a side note in stories about hunter-gatherers. For the Hadza, that would be a mistake. In the study “ Eat First, Share Later ”, J. Colette Berbesque and colleagues followed Hadza men across 146 person-day follows and 921 hours of observation. They found that men often ate while away from camp, and “the vast majority” of those out-of-camp calories came from honey (Berbesque et al., 2016, p. 281). The same study reports that honey supplied about 85 percent of the calories men consumed while foraging away from camp. That changes the way we should understand Hadza subsistence. Hunting matters, but honey collecting is also a major part of men’s food wor k. Hadza men may carry bows and arrows while also carrying an axe to open beehives. Berbesque et al. note that men “always have their bow and arrows with them” even when carrying an axe for honey (2016, p. 282). A hunting trip and a honey trip may be part of the same day. Axes, Knives and the Work After the Hunt A Hadza man carries a traditional axe, an essential multipurpose tool used for honey collecting, cutting wood, preparing camps, and processing game The hunt does not end when an animal is found. Some of the most skilled work begins afterward. ADVERTISEMENT O’Connell, Hawkes and Blurton Jones describe how carcasses are processed near the kill site. A fire may be made nearby. Small pieces of meat may be roasted. Bones may be cracked for marrow. Meat is cut into pieces that can be carried back to camp. The researchers write that butchering is done with “double-edged, soft-steel knives” (1988, p. 118). Axes also appear in the process, especially when cutting through harder parts of the carcass. Other tools vital in the hunt hadza small toolkit Hadza dagger Hunters bell for scaring the prey This practical detail matters. It shows that Hadza material culture includes both older-looking tools and newer materials. A steel knife can sit beside a bow and arrow inside the same living system. Hadza culture is not frozen in the past. It adapts. Hides, Bags and Everyday Use Hadza material culture also includes what happens to animal hides. Some hides are eaten after processing, but others are saved for practical use. Hadza bags A traditional Hadza leather carrying pouch made from animal hide, used to transport personal items, small hunting tools / Credit: © The Trustees of the British Museum (British Museum Collection). O’Connell and his co-authors write that “hides are saved for later use” (1988, p. 120). They note that hides may be used for clothing, carrying bags and ground coverings. This tells us something important about Hadza design. Objects are not decorative extras. They help people move, carry, sleep, cook and share. A hide may become part of camp life. A cloth may become a carrying bag. A tool may serve more than one purpose. The British Museum’s Hadza collection records also show why material culture should be studied through real objects, not stereotypes. Hadza tools are best understood as practical items inside a mobile way of life. Children Learn Through Watching and Play Hadza knowledge is not only taught through formal lessons. Children watch, imitate and take part. A study on Hadza and BaYaka children’s play found that “Hadza children extensively participate in foraging” (Lew-Levy et al., 2019, p. 5). The same research, published in Child Development, describes children’s play themes that include hunting, honey collecting and tool manufacture. The study is available through Wiley . ADVERTISEMENT Hadza children play themes that include hunting, honey collecting and tool manufacture This does not mean play alone creates expert hunters or honey collectors. But it does show that children grow up near the tools, movements and stories of adult work. They learn by being close to life as it happens. What People Often Get Wrong One common mistake is to describe Hadza men only as big-game hunters. The evidence is more complex. Berbesque et al . found that most animal acquisitions in their study were small game, not large animals (2016, pp. 284–285). Another mistake is to treat honey as a snack. The research shows honey can be a major energy source, especially for men while away from camp. A third mistake is to call Hadza tools “primitive.” That word says more about the outsider than the tools. Hadza material culture is skilled, portable and fitted to a specific landscape. It is not simple because people lack knowledge. It is simple because mobility rewards efficiency. Hadza hunting tools and honey collecting are not just survival techniques. They are part of a wider material world built around movement, sharing, skill and deep attention to the land. The bow, arrow, axe, knife, hide and honeycomb all tell the same story: Hadza culture is practical, intelligent and alive. To understand these tools properly, we must see them not as relics, but as part of a living relationship between people, food, landscape and knowledge. - North Kivu: At Least 70 Civilians Killed in ADF Attack on Ntoyo
At least 70 civilians were killed in an ADF rebel attack on Ntoyo, North Kivu. Survivors call for urgent help as FARDC and UPDF launch search ops. At least 70 civilians were killed according to Radio Okapi during a brutal overnight attack attributed to ADF rebels in the town of Ntoyo, 7 kilometers from Mangurejipa in Lubero territory, North Kivu. According to local officials, the assault happened on Monday, September 8, around 10 p.m., as residents gathered for a wake. The attackers used both knives and guns, killing dozens on the spot. Heavy Toll and Destruction Sector chief Macaire Sovikunula reported a provisional toll of 71 dead, 8 injured, and around 20 people missing. At least 14 houses, vehicles, and motorcycles were also destroyed. Civil society leaders fear the number of victims could rise as more families search for loved ones. Security Response The quick intervention of joint FARDC and UPDF forces from Mangurejipa helped limit further killings, though the assailants managed to retreat into the forest west of Ntoyo. Military and administrative authorities confirmed the attack and said search operations are ongoing. Call for Help Local activists criticized security services for ignoring earlier warnings about rebel movements in the area. The governor’s advisor for humanitarian affairs has urged humanitarian organizations to step in and support the survivors. For now, daily life in Ntoyo is at a standstill. Shops remain closed, families are in mourning, and the community continues to search for the missing. This massacre is one of the deadliest ADF attacks in North Kivu this year, once again exposing the urgent need for stronger protection of civilians in eastern Congo.
