The physical Smart ID remains the available replacement for the green ID book while regulations and technical infrastructure are completed. What Home Affairs demonstrated At Constitution Hill, Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber opened a Digital ID credential in the MyMzansi app and authenticated it with his thumbprint. Director-General Tommy Makhode then used a verifier app to request identity information. Schreiber generated a QR code and chose which fields to disclose. He withheld his ID number while allowing selected information, including nationality, to be checked. When a second request was made, he rejected it and access was denied. TechCentral’s account of the demonstration explains that the photograph came from the population register and the credential was bound to the phone’s chip. The Home Affairs keynote address says the credential was formally issued through the population register rather than being a screenshot or a photograph of an ID card.
