UN Faces Major Funding Shortfall for Southern Africa Drought Relief during Severe Crisis Ayize claire Aug 6, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link A farmer in southern Africa struggles with drought conditions, trying to harvest crops on parched land affected by the El Niño climate phenomenon. The U.N. World Food Programme (WFP) is facing significant challenges in raising the necessary funds to combat the severe drought affecting southern Africa. As of Tuesday, the WFP has secured only $80 million of the $400 million needed to aid seven countries in the region. This shortfall highlights the increasingly difficult funding environment for humanitarian aid. The drought, the worst in decades, has led Zambia, Malawi, and Zimbabwe to declare states of disaster. The El Niño climate phenomenon, which alters global weather patterns, has been a significant factor, bringing extreme temperatures, dry spells, and reducing crop yields. According to WFP spokesperson Thomson Phiri, about 70% of the southern African population, who rely on rain-fed agriculture, saw their harvests devastated by the lack of rains. This situation has dramatically increased the region's food needs. The WFP's current goal is to use the funds raised to support 5.9 million of the 27 million food-insecure people in the region until the next harvest season in 2025. Efforts include sourcing white grain from Tanzania, South Africa, and Latin America to feed affected communities. Despite notable donor contributions, the demand for food assistance remains exceptionally high, outpacing available resources during this historical drought. Donor support has waned due to budget cuts, leaving many in southern Africa facing the compounded effects of the drought and reduced aid. Reena Ghelani, the UN's climate crisis coordinator for the El Niño response, emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting a sharp increase in hunger across the region. She warned that climate change is likely to bring prolonged dry spells and frequent droughts in the coming years, exacerbating food insecurity. This dire situation calls for immediate and substantial action to address the growing needs of millions affected by the drought and to mitigate the long-term impacts of climate change on the region. How Combating Climate Change Can Impact Economy in Kenya Ayize claire Oct 12, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link President William Ruto delivers a speech Kenya’s susceptibility to climate change is on the high end as it affects sensitive sub-sectors such as agriculture and tourism. About seventy five percent of the population engages in agriculture which is already getting some shocks with therein extreme events such as droughts and floods and there are therefore some estimations that such a position could give one in GDP losses of up to 7% by the year 2050, if no adaptation measures are taken. William Ruto has been calling for the need for environmental care, through tree growing to take care of climate change scourge "If there is a programme that will make a meaningful impact on food security, it is environmental protection," he remarked, highlighting the need to protect key water sources for agriculture. On another note, Mumias East MP Peter Salasya attracted attention because of his remarks about climate change in the world, something that attracted a lot of criticism on social media. Defending his remarks, Salasya asserted, "I was not elected to talk about climate change." Kenya has its own share of so much risk but there are also elements of economic opportunity in the climate debate. The country has set a timeline of 2030 whereby its electricity grid will be entirely run on renewable energy. This is being achieved through initiatives such as the Lake Turkana Wind Power project as it reduces dependence on conventional energy sources and also creates employment. Performance of agriculture is anticipated to support the nation economically over years to come due to investments on changing from the conventional methods of farming to climate smart agriculture, however, Kenya has a financing shortfall of 62 billion US dollar in mainstreaming climate action for the year 2030. Resilience building and the enhancement of climate-sustainable economic growth will require additional funding of climate-resilient economic activities and development financing particularly in Kenya. Credit:gettyimages Former Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, has shared new insights into the extended efforts it took to secure Ademola Lookman’s decision to switch allegiance from England to Nigeria, as reported by OwngoalNigeria.com . Lookman, who has emerged as a key player for the Super Eagles and a top contender for the African Player of the Year award, had previously represented England at various youth levels, including the 2017 U20 World Cup, where he was part of the victorious squad. Rohr, reflecting on Lookman’s rise, revealed that convincing the forward to commit to Nigeria was a process that spanned nearly two years. Unfortunately, by the time Lookman’s switch was approved, Rohr was no longer in charge of the Super Eagles. "The discussions began in 2020, but the official approval came in 2021, after I had already left my role as Nigeria's coach. He was on my provisional list for AFCON, but we were still awaiting clearance. The final approval arrived in 2022, just after the tournament in Cameroon," Rohr, now coach of Benin Republic, explained. "I’m happy with his progress, even though he’s scored twice against my team," he added. Rohr also highlighted that Lookman had been involved with England’s senior national setup for some time, and the decision to switch wasn’t immediate. "We had discussions with his representatives and family members, and it took nearly two years. I’m certain he doesn’t regret his decision now." ANIF, responsible for financial investigations and anti-corruption efforts, plays a key role in promoting financial transparency in the country. Reports indicate that Engonga was captured on video in explicit encounters with several women, including close family members and influential figures. Engonga, also known as "Bello," is a well-known public figure in Equatorial Guinea, born on March 15, 1970, in Malabo. He holds a degree in economics and finance from the University of Malabo and is married with six children. The scandal escalated after authorities allegedly discovered over 300 videos on his computer, featuring encounters with multiple women, including some married to high-ranking officials. The footage, reportedly recorded with consent, was later leaked online, igniting public outrage and disapproval from government officials. Engonga also faces accusations of financial misconduct. Allegations suggest he may have been involved in misappropriating over 1.2 billion Central African CFA francs from public funds. Following these allegations, Engonga, along with other implicated officials, is under preventive detention, with several assets frozen as part of the ongoing investigation. Equatorial Guinea’s Vice President, Teodoro Nguema, publicly addressed the scandal on social media, denouncing inappropriate conduct in government offices. He reiterated that sexual relations are strictly forbidden in administrative workplaces, cautioning that violations would lead to disciplinary action. Nguema emphasized that government offices exist solely for administrative functions that drive national progress.
