Nigerian rapper YCee has shared one of the most personal chapters of his life, revealing that a mental health diagnosis in 2020 forced him to step away from music and begin a long journey toward recovery.

According to The Punch, the 'Omo Alhaji' hitmaker, whose real name is Oludemilade Martin Alejo, spoke about his experience during a recent episode of the Afropolitan Podcast, explaining how the COVID-19 lockdown became a turning point in his life.

YCee said he was living in London when doctors diagnosed him with a mental health condition. He spent about three months in and out of hospital during a six-month stay in the UK before returning to Nigeria to continue treatment because of his visa status.

Back in Lagos, the rapper said adjusting to mental healthcare in Nigeria was not easy. He underwent years of treatment that included medication, therapy sessions and several hospital admissions as he worked to manage his condition.

The award-winning artist described the recovery process as unpredictable, saying there were periods when things improved and others when life became extremely difficult. His experience also explains why fans saw less of him during those years, as his focus shifted from music to his health.

YCee revealed that he is now in a much better place after years of treatment and therapy. While he continues to prioritize his wellbeing, he says he has reached a level of stability that allows him to move forward.
