American rapper Wiz Khalifa has been sentenced to nine months in prison in Romania after a final ruling in a drug possession case, according to court officials.
The decision was issued on December 18, 2025, by the Constanța Court of Appeal, which reviewed and overturned an earlier judgment that had imposed a monetary fine of 3,000 Romanian lei. Prosecutors requested the review, prompting the appeals court to apply a custodial sentence under Romania’s drug laws.
Khalifa, whose legal name is Thomaz Cameron Jibril, was found guilty of possessing illegal substances for personal use. Authorities stressed that the case did not involve drug trafficking or distribution, noting that the charges were limited strictly to possession.
The court ruled that the sentence followed Romania’s Law No. 143 of 2000, which governs illegal drug possession and allows penalties ranging from fines to prison terms of up to two years. Under Romanian law, the appeals court’s decision is final and cannot be challenged.
Judicial officials also confirmed that Khalifa was briefly detained during proceedings in 2024 but was later released and did not remain in custody during the trial period.
Romania is known for its comparatively strict stance on drug offenses, even in cases involving small quantities intended for personal use. The case has drawn international attention due to the artist’s global profile and has served as a reminder to foreign visitors about the importance of complying with local laws.
