A third suspect, Samuel Karanja Gathoni, also known as “Lawyer,” was arrested in the Langata Multi-Media area while travelling towards Ongata Rongai, according to the same DCI account. The Standard independently carried the names, locations and intended transfer process.

No opened court record shows that the three latest suspects have pleaded to charges. No conviction has been entered, and no publicly accessible response from the suspects or their lawyers was located before publication. Those distinctions are essential because an arrest confirms custody, not guilt.
The DCI also rejected claims that investigators had previously arrested and quietly released suspects or helped people escape. That denial is the agency’s position; it does not independently resolve political criticism of the investigation.
How the investigation reached this point
Dr Mutiso was fatally shot in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area on 29 July 2026 while travelling in a requested ride. In its first official statement, the DCI said crime-scene teams recovered exhibits, interviewed witnesses and transferred the inquiry to homicide detectives and forensic experts.
One day later, the agency’s initial investigation update said two persons of interest were in custody and that evidence recovered during searches was undergoing forensic analysis. Why the cross-border element matters
Kenya and Uganda regularly cooperate on criminal investigations, but each case still requires precise handling of custody and court procedure. In the present case, however, the officer’s alleged role must be assessed through evidence and due process rather than assumed from his occupation or arrest.
The next verifiable milestones are the return of the two suspects from Uganda, their first court appearances, the charges if any approved by prosecutors, and any responses filed by defence lawyers. Until then, the confirmed story is the arrest operation, not a final account of who planned or carried out Dr Mutiso’s killing.
