Veteran Nollywood actress Victoria Inyama has sparked debate after sharing her personal experience with female circumcision, describing it as both traumatic and influential in shaping her adult life.
In a video circulated online and shared by media personality Daddy Freeze, Inyama recounted undergoing the procedure as a child while living with her grandmother in a village. She described the experience as painful and distressing but said it had lasting effects on her personal discipline and life choices.
According to her, although she considers female genital mutilation (FGM) harmful, she believes the experience contributed to her sense of control, particularly in relationships. She stated that the outcome influenced her lifestyle and decision-making as an adult.
Inyama recalled that she was around five or six years old at the time of the procedure, describing how she endured severe pain and trauma during the process. She said she was physically restrained and eventually lost consciousness due to the intensity of the experience.
The actress also addressed whether she would allow her daughters to undergo the same procedure. She indicated that her current circumstances, including her children’s upbringing abroad, would not support such a decision, while acknowledging the broader legal and cultural context.
Her remarks have since generated widespread reactions online, with many debating the health, cultural and ethical implications of female circumcision.
