The U.S. Embassy in Kampala has launched its Freedom 250: The American Edge campaign, setting out a year-long programme of activities to mark 250 years since American independence. The campaign was unveiled at the U.S. Ambassador’s residence in Kampala, bringing together Ugandan officials, diplomats, business leaders, alumni of U.S. exchange programmes and members of the media.
According to the embassy, Freedom 250 will run through 2026 and include media engagements, storytelling initiatives, exhibitions, public events and educational programmes focused on U.S.-Uganda cooperation.
U.S. Ambassador William Popp said the campaign will highlight American innovation, entrepreneurship, education and partnership, which he described as part of the “American Edge.” The embassy says the wider milestone will culminate on July 4, 2026, when the United States marks the 250th anniversary of its independence.
Uganda’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Henry Okello Oryem, said relations between Uganda and the United States remain “cordial and historical,” citing cooperation in health, education, refugee support and security.
The campaign also aligns with the broader America250 initiative, which is coordinating commemorations around the United States’ semiquincentennial.
