Nigerian rapper and singer Superboy Cheque has revealed that he almost abandoned his music career at an early stage because of a severe struggle with acne that affected his confidence and public appearances.
The artist made the revelation during a recent interview with Yanga FM Lagos, where he opened up about the emotional toll his skin condition had on him during the early days of his career
Cheque explained that the condition deeply affected his self-esteem and made it difficult for him to face cameras and interact with people.
“I struggled with acne years back. It was terrible,” he said. “My desperation to cure it led me to buy a makeup that almost disfigured my face. It was embarrassing. I almost quit music.”
According to the singer, the situation worsened after he achieved early success in the music industry. Following the release of his breakthrough song “Zoom” and signing with a record label, he realized that public appearances and interviews would become a regular part of his career.
Seeking a quick solution, Cheque said he purchased a cosmetic product in hopes of improving his skin condition. However, the product had the opposite effect.
“I woke up one morning and realised that my whole face had been damaged,” he recalled.
The experience, he said, changed his relationship with cameras and social interactions, making him more self-conscious about his appearance.
Despite the setback, Cheque eventually overcame the challenge and continued building his career in the Nigerian music industry. He noted that the difficult period later influenced his creativity and inspired his hit track “History,” featuring Fireboy DML.
Today, the singer views the experience as part of his personal and professional growth, saying the challenge helped shape his journey in music.
