Nigerian singer Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has disclosed details about his routine before stepping onto the stage, saying it includes drinking tequila, smoking and praying.

The Afrobeats star made the remarks in an interview with Dazed magazine during Milan Fashion Week, where he attended and showcased designs from the fashion house Diesel Rema

.

According to Rema, he takes a brief moment before performing to sip tequila, smoke lightly, pray and check in with his team to ensure everything is in order.

“[I take a moment] to drink a little tequila, a little smoke, pray, and connect with my team to make sure everything is aligned,” he said.

He explained that the ritual helps him prepare both mentally and physically before facing a live audience. Rema noted that performing on stage is more demanding than modeling, particularly because singing requires breath control and sustained energy while keeping the crowd engaged.

“Performing requires a lot, especially with breathing, and you have to maintain the crowd’s energy,” he said.

While he emphasized the importance of prayer in his preparation, the singer admitted that smoking is a habit he particularly enjoys.

Rema continues to expand his global presence beyond music, increasingly engaging in fashion and international events. He also revealed that he has recently been listening to traditional live Sudanese music, reflecting his interest in exploring diverse cultural sounds.

The 2019 hit “Dumebi” marked his breakthrough, followed by songs such as “Iron Man,” “Lady,” and “Ginger Me.” His 2022 global smash “Calm Down,” later remixed with Selena Gomez, significantly boosted his international recognition, earning chart success on platforms including Spotify and Billboard.
